Hello,

I have a question for all you tech people out there...I ran into a slight problem with my CPU. Currently I have a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ processor and I wanted to upgrade for this game so I bought a AMD Phenom II Black edition 3.2 GHz processor, But here is the problem, when I installed it I hear the CPU fan run for a couple seconds then it turns off, computer doesn’t turn on after that or anything. And I did make sure the grooves match up on the processor and the mother-board, I wanted to know if its a problem with the processor or my mother-board. My mother board is a ASUS M2N-PLUS SLI VISTA EDITION. IF its not compatible with my motherboard what CPU do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advanced

Doesn't look like your board supports Phenom...

Is upgrading your motherboard an option?

I wanted to keep the upgrades to a minimum... So im looking for a good processor first, if there isnt a good processor that would work for my motherboard I guess I would have to upgrade the motherboard. But I wanted that to be the last possible case.

Someone here could probably recommend one if there is one, but it sounds like the Phenoms are what you want for this game. X2's are listed as the minimum requirement.

Either an Athlon II X4 or Phenom II X4 would be recommended. At minimum, an X3 or X2 but I wouldn't necessarily recommend them. Phenom is slightly more pricey than, and also better than, an Athlon.

This motherboard supports a socket AM2 and the better processors are socket AM3, so if you want a Phenom II, you're going to need a board that supports AM3.

Another thing is that your current board only supports DDR2, so if you get a new one, you'll either need a board that supports your older DDR2 RAM or you'll need new DDR3 RAM to go with the new board.

DDR2 AM3 Boards

DDR3 AM3 Boards

Don't cheap out on a motherboard either; anything under 50-60 bucks, you get what you pay for. MSI, ASUS, ASRock, and Gigabyte are pretty good brands.

You can get some pretty good combo deals with motherboard/processors on Newegg. I like to do that when I build a new system, because I'm buying both anyway and might as well get a combo discount. Just make sure the mobo works with everything else you have like your RAM.

If we reread the OP, we will notice that he (or she?) has already bought the CPU and it isn't working.

So yeah, new motherboard for you :)

It's not working because the motherboard doesn't support the cpu. I'm currently using the same mobo and your old cpu. I was hoping to spend as little as possible to upgrade my current rig, but unfortunately, once I change 1 thing, I have to change it all. I've just bought the parts and I'll have to assemble everything when it gets here.

Right, unless he/she (but this is the internet, so he) can return the CPU for a refund or credit.

That board should be able to run the 3.2 GHZ BE processor (I'm assuming its the x4 955) with a bios update.

I just upgraded my rig (M2N32-SLI DLX mobo) with a phenom 955 as well. It doesn't officially support the 955/965 processors but there is a work around that involves using nvidia control panel (requires an nvidia card). I believe the M2N-SLI series boards also have a modded bios out there which enables 955/965 support without any workarounds.

More information can be found here: http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherboards/366989-asus-m2n-sli-m2n32-sli-club.html

Overall, if you have an old AM2 board (such as the M2N series) check out your manufacturers websites for new bios updates that may have enabled AM3 processor support for your board. I'm using the M2N with a Phenom 955 and it's benching almost as well as setups with AM3 boards and DDR3 ram (the difference is negligible so far, not enough to justify a new board/ram).

If you haven't gotten a new motherboard yet:

I have the same CPU and this works with it and DDR2. Not the best board but it will do until I upgrade at the end of the year.
