Auction Houses - Local vs GlobalFollow

I liked how the local auction houses in FFXI worked early in the game. With certain items only available in and near certain cities it allowed for trade between the cities and forced people to visit other cities or ask friends to pick up items when passing through. The problem was late in the game's life people began to centralize around Jeuno, making that the only AH ever used and killing the economies of the other cities.

I think you may be able to fix this by giving each of the starter cities their own AH, then link the centralized city's AH to one of those cities in a cycle. For example, link the centralized city's AH to Limsa Lominsa's AH for a week, then the next week link it to Gridania's, then the third week link it to Ul'dah's, then repeat.

I think this could keep the starter cities' economies from dying late in the game, while still allowing the advantages of having separate economies for each city.

I, too, think that Eve probably did the auction house thing the best. Hated bazaars in XI, so I hope that if that's a system they want to use predominantly, that they refine it quite a bit beforehand.

Okay, been in beta for close to a week now and have to say that if this is "as good as it gets" for an in-game market system, I won't be continuing a subscription with SE. This bazaar-ONLY system was not thought out... the bazaar still works at the same efficiency if not worse than the old bazaar system from FFXI (with the same slow delays between having to open your menu to select "browse", the actual inventory loading, etc, etc.)

You have basically 10-15 "market wards" in each city that are carbon copy "instanced zones" for you to drop your NPC shopkeeping avatar that holds your crap -- cool idea until you realize all the other hundreds of ppl are going to drop their avatar in the same wards. I seriously have a cluster f*** when I try to load in to these populated market wards - to then have to wade through bazaar after bazaar of worthless junk until I find what I need. (Yet to find what I'm ever looking for.)

Simply: The AH was fun, you didn't have to communicate (english/japanese) to use it, and it created a way for you to easily search out buyers/sellers without going through countless laggy interface menus. What were you thinking SE?

Not to mention - I only hear crickets at the mention of housing and in-game mail systems...

*edit* I did find this sign hanging above the closed off area before the ferry in Limsa Lominsa - Hope maybe?

One thing to consider though. It wasn't really the AH, imo, that kept people all in one area. The shouting system in FFXI was the major way to gather parties together for mission and quests. I personally hung out in whitegate just to try to get parties for different missions I was on.

If they added a global chat (which honestly I could do without after having seen it abused to the point where it wasn't useful at all, i.e. WoW and Aion) and a global AH then I think you would see population balance out.

Without both, I don't see just a global AH working like you would like it too. That is of course if XIV keeps inline with XI in no global chatting (again praying to the SE gods to keep it out for the sanity of most of the players).

I played FFXI. Trust me, Whitegate /shout was no more useful than WoW's trade chat.

Hmm which server where you on? Maybe I use to hit it at the right time. I use to play late night/early morning PST and for the most part whitegate shouts were for missions alternating in English and Japanese.

I did quit about a year ago, maybe it went down hill since then as well?

It can't be a recent development, because I stopped playing 2 1/2 years ago.

But at least on Pandy, it was at least as much people chatting with each other over /shout or simply trolling as it was actual useful chatter.

Why do I want to create more "busy" work for myself?

lol unfortunately i doubt SE has has a translation or even understands the concept of "busy" work, because they loooove shoving it down our throats and they shrug their shoulders in confusion (or deliberate ignorance) when the community gripes about the tedious and busy work no one really needs.

The assumption of no AH or something similar is beyond my comprehension.
In fact, FFXI's AH only was implanted to the game on the 1st July 2002 patch, nearly 2 months after the game release at 16th May,2002. There was no AH, not even Jeuno exist in the JP beta.

It is 8 yrs from now but I am still quite sure.

What SE really needs to do is make it easier to browse what types of stuff people are selling without having to manually check since in rela life you could just glance at a stand and know what types of things they are selling. like icons for weapon types, armor types, item types, and material types. This way you could check the bazaars of those with h2h weapons, swords, staves, clothing, leather armor, heavy armor, weaving materials, cooking ingredients, and so on.

I've seen numerous AH threads pop up on this forum, kinda redudant with the complaints of no active AH at this point, but you people do realize there actually is an AH already in game right? Although not usable, it's still there (Limsa Lominsa, across from the Arcanist guild).. There's obviously a lot of content left out. Ever actually take a look at your map in town? There are countless ares where future shops or guilds could pop up. Surely the majority of you realize they wouldn't leave these areas blank on purpose?

While the retainer system isn't fully understood at this point, it does have its possible uses outside of an AH.
1. Repairs - You can have an item sit on your retainer and hopefully have someone repair it.
2. Buying - You can have your Retainer wait to buy items for you.

I'm sure there are other reasons for implementing the retainer system, but only time will tell. As was mentioned before, it's possible they want to encourage us to use retainers to reduce congestion of people going AFK with bazaars.

Personally, it all seems fairly ineffective to me, could have made things much more simple.. but then again, I didn't make the game, I'm just here to play it and try to have some fun.

They better implement some kind of AH or easy way of listing what's available in bazaars or there's no way I'm playing. I don't have the time or desire to search a hundred bazaars for the 1 item I may need.
