While everyone's going for original names, I've been stuck between some names that only UK gamers will recognise. I've now decided so I'm going to keep stum on that, but a couple of my considerations were Norris Cole (Coronation Street) and Derek/Del Trotter (Only Fools and Horses). Somehow porting those names into an MMO fills me with joy lol.

I'm still working on a name personally.

Ged Sparrowwhawk has a special place in my heart (if anyone is familiar with the Earthsea series) but I like to use original names...

The problem I am having is that my FFXI character was Skavian - and I cannot think of ANYTHING that fits with Skavian very well. I use Skavian in nearly every single game I play and have used the name for like 10 years now. I'd like to continue his legacy but it's proving to be difficult to think of something catchy.

Yea, I'm so unoriginal when it comes to a name for my character as I like using my real name. Only reason I did "Avirex" for 11 was that my real name was already being used and when thinking of a name I spotted my jacket hanging on the wall and justed that.
I like the funny names I've seen on 11 like 'popcorn' or 'waffles' or someone's real name like 'johnny depp' but I can't say I'm a fan of people using titles in their name. Example; using the word 'chan' or 'sempai' or something to that effect. I dunno, just think that those are to be given to someone from other people not themselves.

Skavian Devoco (I call away)
Skavian Dico (I consecrate)
Skavian Candesco (I shine)
Skavian Carnifex (executioner)
Svavian Pax (Peace)
Skavian Pedes (foot-soldier)
Skavian Sors (prophecy)
Skavian Stellans (Starry, bright, shining)
Skavian Tagax (Thieving)
Skavian Tentigo (Lust... lol)
Skavian Tetricus (Harsh, Gloomy)
Skavian Thrax (Gladiator -specifically a gladiator from Thrace, but cool word nontheless)

just some random ideas from my Latin dictionary - I think latin words make serviceable last names that have meaning - and no one can make fun of you for stealing their language to make a name, lol... and most people won't know what they mean but you will!

Skavian sounds more like a surname to me but that's just my opinion.

I'm personally still having a really difficult time deciding on a name. I have a specific name/word that I want but I can't settle on whether or not I want it to be my surname or given name. I'm leaning towards surname since I'm probably going to end up grouping with Japanese players like I did in FFXI and I want my surname to be the primary name used when addressing me. Decisions, decisions.

Yeah but if you get it first and it's actually spelled right, it's not so bad. A Hyur brunette hyur female with long hair and main class pugilist named Tifa Lockheart would be kinda rad in my book. It's the guys who try it, can't get it, and name themseleves Tifa Lokheart, Lockhart, or any other variation that's ruins the immersion. If you're a thunder blasting conjurer and name it something like Tifa Shockheart or something, it's kinda funny.

Yeah a little creativity like that makes it more interesting, Tifa Shockheart sounds cool. One of my other ideas mixes a couple ff characters' names and also becomes a reference to one of my favorite bands....another option I'm thinking about.

This place has one of the most intuitive name generators I have ever seen. You can create insulting names, vowel-heavy names, names with apostrophes, mushy names, fantasy names, japanese names, etc. If you don't like the presets, read up a bit on the generator and make your own!

I'm not sure, I'm torn between "Secks Masheen" and my original FFXI character name so everyone who played on my server will instantly know who I am. I'll just end up throwing on my original german family name as the surname to really bring out the awesome.

God, I'm stuck in a situation. I have three names I used in my online games, but can't pick between the three. In XI I was known as Sylvanna. In WoW I had Yukaiko and Artemede, actually had 4 in WoW, but I personally can't picture a Miq'ote named OBlackbetty, but I could see a male of the larger races named Nomala. Don't even get me started on surnames, I can't pick a first name and they expect me to choose a last name?

I think of the 3, (if its not too wierd for you) Sylvanna makes a good last name.. So Artemede Sylvanna or Yukaiko Sylvanna look very nice from this side; I know form your side it's a mash of characters you already know well so it doesn't seem as nice, but I like it!

In the end I bet picking a name should be done like picking a tattoo: write it down and put it on your monitory, bathroom mirror, car visor, on the fridge, and your bedside lamp. Make sure you'll see it several times a day, then after a couple weeks see how you feel about it once your "used to it" just to make sure it's something you truly identify with and won't get tired off.

Interesting, that does make a lot of sense though, and we have plenty of time to do that while waiting. Then you can avoid that name you think is brilliant during registration, but end up hating it a week later....

This probably puts me firmly in the OCD catagory, but I'm not going to be able to settle on a name until I can see it the correct font! I have a particular name I like to use whenever possible. Sometimes the spacing of the letters doesn't look right to me and then I'm forced to try another name. I'm not normally like this, but there is something about picking an alias that you'll have to live with for (hopefully) years that makes me want it to be perfect. And then I get weird. For instance, I do not like "i" or "l" sans serif (but in this font they are just fine and dandy) because they'll be too skinny and interupt the visual disgestion of the name.

EDIT: turns out the font for typing a reply is different than the font displayed on the forms. The font you will be reading in would break my heart in game.

Feiht Thginkkrad <=> Dark Knight Thief

I like the sound of "Feet" as strong one syllable name. And "Think Krad" sounds somewhat regal IMO.

It'll either be that or Darcnite Theef.

I just really loved those jobs in FFXI and plan to custom them in FFXIV.

But I'd also like Sata Fui(Yoko)dama, but I'm trying to stay away from the "American using Japanese words as a name" route.

I'm not going to be able to settle on a name until I'm sure of the exact format that we'll be using. What's the maximum amount of characters? Will hyphens, spaces, or capitalization be allowed? Etc. etc.

I'd like to have the initials "BT" in there somewhere to be my first name, but I suspect that it won't be viable. Gonna probably try to get "Armadillo" in there somewhere too. It's gonna take some fiddling to find something I'm happy with, I can tell.

Being somewhat limited in what is known for sure, I can tell you that for the most part they seem to follow the same conventions as FFXI, except that Roegadyn have more traditional names rather than the faux Native American names. However, this doesn't fully consider how clans may differ in naming conventions, and it's possible that all the NPC names we've seen thus far will change in retail (though very unlikely).

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.
