I played FFXI as a Dark Knight and hoping FFXIV will have a similar class im not big on 2h axes or polearm like dragoon which is pretty much like a lancer which maybe later on is dragoon but I hope it doeasnt lean lancer like AION did which can use polearm and Gsword so can anyone give me feed back please. plus im looking for a linkshell I already paid in full the collectors edition.

As it stands, each job can only use one category of weapon. When you change your weapon, you change your class.

It seems Botanist uses a scythe and haven't seen anything about Great Swords in anything released yet.

Little hand scythe like a farmer would use... not a grim reaper scythe that Magus would use.

The more you know!

I think will seee more weapon options as expansions come out, seven combat classes is still one more than XI had on its JP release, at most will have to wait a year.

Yeh it seems like this will be a starter to get people going on all various classes but maybe a expansion will show more upgrades on each class.

I'd say that if there were gonna be any more weapons added, would mean new classes to be added....at a later date... cant give ya everything up front, gotta keep ya paying/playing/addicted some how ya know...

I don't think this is entirely true. A JP told me that at the day of JP release, everyone was level 1, so they only had options of the 6 starting jobs, BUT the advanced jobs of PLD, DRK and such were available to unlock, so FFXIV actually has 5 less jobs/classes than FFXI did at initial release.

Though he could have been lying.

Think a lot of the advanced classes didnt start until Rise of Zilart release, but there were a few that came out original release

Or perhaps the same will be applied here-and they're just keeping it under wraps (as with so many other things). From what I've heard the level cutoff in beta is well before what you'd expect for new class unlocks.

What I'm wondering personally, as far as weapons, is how aesthetically diverse will the weapons in each class be? Getting a **** looking new weapon is always exciting in MMO's, I hope that'll still be the case here (rather than having a series of generic weapons that everyone else is using too).

RoZ only introduced Sam, Ninja, and Dragoon, that I'm sure, and MAYBE Summoner . So unless they added the other previous advanced jobs somewhere inbetween the initial release and RoZ release, they were there from the beginning.

Ok Ok.... still states the obvious... not putting everything they have up front, need ya to stay hooked until next expansion... then next...then next.....

I'm not saying that their not going to add new classes, it's just that the comparison to what SE did with FFXI was wrong.

I'm HOPING that rather than adding a lot of new classes they just add abilities, traits, and the such to the existing classes.

I'd much rather have 12 deep, highly versatile "combat" classes than 20 slight variations like FFXI.

Couldn't a Scythe be considered a pole-arm?

added classes are important because long time players go back down in level - thereby mixing it up and providing more leveling opportunities for newer players

Well I think that part of the reason (if no new classes are added at release) that we only have access the classes already released, is because of the the ability customizations. Being able to transfer abilites to other classes will allow us to create custom jobs.

I'm huge fan of thievies and dark knights. These can both be created(I think), by combing several job abilities into your main job. Though weapon may not be an exact fit.

Ex:
Thief -> Main Gladiator +
(Pugilist: Blinside(Trick Attack), Steal, Featherfoot(EVA+)) +
(Archer: Quickstride(Run fast)) +
(Lancer: Collusion(Trick Attack))

Dark Knight -> Main Marauder +
(Gladiator: Still Precision(ACC+,EVA-) +
(Lancer: Ferocity (HP-,ATK+), Life Surge (ATK HP Absor) +
(Thaumaturge: Most spells, Blood Rite(HP-, Mag ATK+)) +
(Conjurer: some spells) (I really hope that DoW can use magic spells)

Does anyone know if DoW classes have MP??

I'd call that a sickle, not a scythe, but that's me.

Or we could split the difference and go by FFXI's naming conventions: one-handed is a scythe, and two-handed is a GREAT scythe.

Isn't the Japanese term for those swords "ninja-to"? I thought it literally translated to "ninja sword."

EDIT: Well, here's what wikipedia's got to say on it:

Wikipedia wrote:
The Ninjato (忍者刀 ninjatō?), also known as ninjaken (忍者剣?) or shinobigatana (忍刀?), is the most common name for the Japanese sword that the ninja were thought to have carried. It is often depicted as being a short sword, often portrayed as having a straight blade with a square tsuba. There is no historical evidence of the 'ninjato', and modern depictions of the sword originate from portrayals that were seen in early Hollywood movies.[1] Actual period ninjas used a variety of other weapons.

I'd rather just have it called katana/gatana/wakizashi/etc than "Ninja Sword". It just sounds so lame.

Ditto for "Great" anything. Greatsword is enough, we don't need Great Sword, Great Katana, Great Scythe, Great Club, etc... just call them Claymore, Nodachi, Scythe, Maul, etc.
