Abbreviations for the Disciplines?Follow

So here I was browsing through random forum posts, when I realized some people are already starting to use the 3-letter acronyms to describe the disciplines. I mean, LAN for Lancer is fine and all, but PUG for Pugilist? No no NO! I refuse to deal with the hassle of having to delete the mental image of a dog that snorts like a pig every time I think of Pugilist.

So, with that being said, what are people's thoughts on appropriate acronyms for the various disciplines? Here are some of what I came up with:

Pugilist = PGL
Gladiator = GLA
Marauder = MAR or MRD
Archer = ARC
Lancer = LAN or LNC
Conjurer = CON or CJR
Thaumaturge = THA
Miner = MIN or MNR
Botanist = BOT
Fisher = FSH
Carpenter = CRP
Blacksmith = BLS
Armorer = ARM
Goldsmith = GOL or GLD
Leatherworker = LEA or LTH or LTR
Weaver = WEA or WVR
Alchemist = ALC
Culinarian = CUL

Sorry if I am getting too ahead of myself when the game isn't even out yet. I just think it would make things easier as some of the names are quite long to type.

Ditto to being called 'CRP', maybe CPT would be better?

Hey, now, Pugs are awesome dogs! And some of your acronyms aren't much better; BOT? Hahaha, so they're using bots to play their botanist...

Well, I actually like most of those you made up, though. But I dunno if SE will be able to avoid "words" for all of them; I've seen PAL for Paladin, WAR for Warrior, FUR for Fury, FIT for Fighter, and things like that in various games. Shouldn't be much of a problem, though.

I kinda like PUG, honestly :3

Haha yeah you're right. I just didn't think hard enough for a better term. I could've sworn I saw this used on a post somewhere though.

Ah thank you! I thought acronym didn't sound right but just couldn't put my finger to it...

Haha yessir! I also like your THM for Thaumaturge.

Dog lover here too! That's why the mental image is too strong for me to want to use PUG to refer to Pugilist.

That's true. But then again it might not be 3 letters this time; could be 4 letters or more. Who knows?

well, according to my friend from el salvador, its, a, uh, spanish euphemism for a certain part of the female anatomy that is both awesome and/or tits but without literally being tits.

if you know what i mean.

incidentally, when i asked her and a few other friends from class to come to this italian place i liked named chi-chi's they kinda looked at me weird. i guess chi-chi's is a nickname for boobs in spanish, so initially they thought i was trying to get them to go to some kind of strip club when all i wanted was for them to enjoy some awesome lasagna.

I kind of agree with the Pug thing about not wanting to think of a midget dog that has a smashed face every time someone refers to me. (I think I'll be playing Pug to start). I think it's the easiest though.

Could go PGT, PUT, PLT, PST, PGS, PGL, but I think Pug is the most easily identified.

Or how about MNK? :p

Why not just call it a cook? Makes more sense IMO.

I bet you 100k Gil we will all call them by their weapon instead of the class abbreviation. After all it's the weapon that "makes the job". You might be asked to bring a Staff when you are invited as Healer (Wand) so you can nuke while you are not healing. I don't know enough about how this works but i could imagine shouts like this:

"{Peiste} farming. {Do you need it?} {Looking for members} H2H, SWORD/WAND, 2 x AXE/LANCE, WAND/STAFF"

"{BOW Burn} 4 x BOW, WAND/STAFF @ 1/6"

No need for abbreviations for the Crafting/Gathering classes. That just does not seem right to me at all.

That or the FFXI players will just ignore everything and call a Pugilist MNK, the Archer RNG, the Marauder WAR, the Gladiator PLD and the Mages BLM and WHM. Lancer seems to be the only one that does not directly fit one of the FFXI classes. It's a mix between DRG and THF.

This exactly what I was thinking. Some kind of in-game abbreviation will be the most widely used. I suppose that info is hiding behind the NDA for now.

I think everyone likes PUG though, and BOT will be the source of much amusment/annoyance depending on your sense of humor.

GLAD ftw!

LOL.

Well at least the English names are more interesting than Japanese ones...

Disciples of War = Fighter
Disciples of Magic = Sorcerer
Disciples of the Land = Gatherer
Disciples of the Hand = Crafter

I guess they're more self-explanatory though...

How is it okay to refer to a Dragoon as a computer network (LAN) but not okay to refer to a Monk as a dog (PUG)?

I'm just gonna be calling em PUG, honestly.

PUG
GLA
MAR
ARC
LAN
CON
THAU
Miner
BOT
Fisher
WW
BS
ARM
GS
LW
CC
ALCH
Cook

How about just for once.. We cut out the abbreviations? lol, I hate trying to adjust new abbreviations every game i go to, generally you end up getting them mixed up from other games... Or the worst case scenario, you get kicked from a group for not knowing them...

Honestly, I'm just going to call Pugilist a "PUG" to intentionally annoy people who use "pug" to refer to a pick-up group :)

Possible to avoid abbreviations, start getting spoilt with the translator!

"Hi, con<tab> here from grid<tab>....nice to mee<tab>"

I was thinking abbreviations were necessary to fit all your jobs into the small little 'Search Comment" box in FFXI...
So if that isn't a problem in FFXIV, I think those can be avoided, and furthermore, you may want your expressions understood by all (including Japanese)..

With FFXI, the game already had the abbrieviations... so before making any up if you don't have to, wait for release to see if they already exist.

In a number of games PUG stands for "pick up group" which could cause some confusion. Not a big deal I guess since people can adjust. But don't be surprised if you post for "LFM, 1 PUG pst" or something similar and get lots of tells from all sorts of classes because they think you're just looking for one mor random to fill out the group.

in the spirit of FFXI, gladiator should be GLD as paladin was PLD and its just 1 letter difference
