It's already been confirmed there won't be an open beta unless time allows.

True, I'll have to try and dig it up but Tanaka said "There will be an open beta after Phase 3 if time permits."

I have a hunch they knew in advance. Maybe SE trying to stagger people logging in and creating characters since those previously in beta can jump in right at the start time?

Ok soo ? if the beta 3 starts on the 11th would you not be able to download the client until that day or could you do it before? If everyone is downloading on that one day thats gonna be some major fubar there

I believe it's Peer-to-Peer. So the more people the easier the download? I'm not sure on that point, someone more tech knowledgeable could answer that. Either way, no downloading the client till you have a key.

If it's peer to peer it shouldn't be a prob, on release day I can download the latest Ubuntu distro un less than 5 min and it's over 700mb :D

It is peer-to-peer, but in order to get all of the files in a timely manner you have to do some port forwarding on your router. This is if you're using SE's updater and not some third party torrent program. Might wanna write this down somewhere just in case you get in the beta:

UDP - 55296 - 55551
TCP - 54992 - 55551
UDP - 443

The difference is night and day. Use portforward.com if you need help with this sort of thing.

Hopefully, Beta is going well enough that there will be an Open Beta. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I wonder when they'll be sending out invites, and to how many. Hmmm
#15 Aug 09 2010 at 12:20 PM Rating: Excellent
I'm pretty sure SE starting Beta 3 one day before the contests are scheduled to end is intentional.

I think they're going to want to stagger the massive logins that will be taking place from the second the servers go live again vs the additional testers added. This also leads me to believe that there are going to be a huge number of new invitees. We've even heard on this board of Gamestop receiving Beta invites for their employees.

Me neither and its hard to read posts on other sites about the beta and see some videos but I can't help myself. I also really wanted to get in to try some different hardware configurations out to give me a better idea of what to expect.

I sure hope so. I've got my fingers crossed for a beta invite, especially since my computer parts are on order at this moment.

For me, it's just a matter of I want to play now! While I normally like to get a chance to jump into an open beta (I'll admit, as much to check out the game as help with testing), FFXIV is one MMO I am not worried about. As we get closer to release, the wait is like an ever-present midget with a 2x4 hitting me when I'm not thinking about it and saying "Final Fantasy!!!" with a whiny, little voice...

...or maybe it's just me.

The anticipation is killer. I check my email like 10x a day now. I see something in the spam filter and I get all excited even though deep down, I know it's just more viagra spam.

I agree. They are going to want all the current beta testers to log in first, get all new patches downloaded etc. Once the dust has settled from all that and they don't have to hear any whining from them, they will open the floodgates to the new beta testers.

I agree also that open beta would be nice, but do you think they will hold out to get more ppl to buy the CE? Maybe if they pass a certain retail mark on that then they would do it, who knows.

Open beta would be oohhh so nice, at least for a week or two. It would indeed help to keep the fallout down on release date.

Which is strange because I keep trying to score some Viagra via the web, but my email is clogged up with FFXIV beta keys. I'm like "ENOUGH ALREADY SQUARE ENIX, I DELETED THE LAST 50, WHY DO YOU KEEP SENDING ME MORE?" but of course it's S-E so their customer support representative insists that she can't tell me why after making me wait on hold for 3 hours.

Edit for caps.
