Linkshell Information

Linkshells are community groups that can be created by any player using an item also known as a linkshell, which can be purchased from various NPCs. To join a linkshell, you must first be invited. While your linkshell is equipped, you will be able to converse with other members of your linkshell over the “Linkshell” chat mode, regardless of where you are. When you have equipped a linkshell, that linkshell’s crest will be displayed beside your display name.

* A single character can join up to eight linkshells.
* A single linkshell can have a maximum of 128 members.
* A linkshell’s name can be up to 31 alphanumeric characters long.

-Linkshell Administration Linkshells are made up of masters, leaders, and members. Linkshell administration is only handled by masters and leaders.

Powers allotted to masters:

* Disbanding the linkshell
* Altering the linkshell’s crest
* Inviting new members
* Promoting members to leaders, demoting leaders to members
* Exiling members and leaders from the linkshell

Powers allotted to leaders:

* Inviting new members
* Exiling members from the linkshell

Oh neat, I wonder what the linkshell crests will look like.

Here's to hoping the extra Linkshells don't take up space in our inventory ^^

Yea I hope we get something like a LS sack that takes up one slot in your inventory and you can fit all 8 LS's in it...I hope they don't take up individual slots. Anyway, sounds exactly like FFXI's LS system which I liked so thumbs up.

Not liking the rigidity this entails. It's custom practice these days for guilds to be able to create their own hierarchy...going the opposite direction is a mistake in my opinion. Also, limiting the number of members in a linkshell is quite ridiculous unless "companies" are unlimited. If that were the case I could see linkshells simply becoming small social groups while companies would be the actual new gameplay linkshell. Which I'm fine with.

Don't understand what you're saying, I didn't see any rigidity in the explanation here but maybe I misread something. As for LS, I think they're more of a social group this time around considering Companies will be more like end game shells...atleast this would be my guess.

I think there's some information floating around somewhere (not sure exactly where I heard this, so take it with a grain of salt) which states that Companies are for questing, leveling and other gameplay aspects while Linkshells are social hubs.

I agree, SolidMack; I really hope linkshells and pearls stack in some way this time.

About the hierarchy, I think he meant that the number of ranks within the link and their permissions should be customizable (to a point). This is a fairly standard feature of MMO guilds now, and this is probably the biggest drawback to the linkshell system to me. It would be nice to allow for a co-leader to have permissions above the leaders/officers/sackholders and to give the link to a new owner if the previous owner wants to step down, is leaving, etc. (I don't know if that was possible in FFXI - didn't think it was).

All in all, I'm just thrilled to be able to join more than one at a time again. I had so many social ones in FFXI that I never wanted to leave. ^^

I am hoping this is the case. If it is, I really think SE should just blatantly rip off EQ2's guild system and use it for Companies. EQ2 did guilds perfectly. Functionality at it's best. Your current/basic linkshell system is hardly more than an in-game IRC chat.

well the quote in the OP states that the hierarchy will be comprised of "masters, leaders, and members".

Notice the "s" on masters. So i think the major (if not only) change to the linkshell system from xi's is the ability for the owner, probably a master rank, is able to promote members up to his level so if he leaves he won't have to kill the shell so someone can take over.

*prays for FFXIV to have linkshells that stack or live in a slot outside of inventory*

I hated feeling like I could really only have one shell on me because I just didn't have the inventory space.

I hated that too. There were a few friends' links I had to drop or decline because of space considerations.

I used to have 10 or so linkshells in my bank that i didn't use but was too nostalgic to throw away.

It would be sweet if they made a seperate menu tab for Linkshells and instead of carrying around the 8 shells in your inventory, they placed them there.

Here's something people have overlooked that XI needed:

The ability to remove someone from a linkshell when they did not currently have the pearl equipped or were offline.

Osarion and I were talking about this in IRC, I think it would be cool to have LS halls that actually show up on the landscape. You could have a common area on the first floor where non members can come in and view the LS trophies, roster, etc, but then have higher levels that would be members only. Make them pricey so they aren't all over the city.

One thing I hope we can do this time is transfer the shell master(s). Our LS kept on for years after our shell holder quit, but it was a pain.

Linkshell Info

I found this nifty set of images while looking for FFXIV info. Includes pictures of what the crest designs look like. I saw the thing Pikko said about screenshots, so this should be OK.

Credit goes to FF14news. Haven't posted here in years, forgot I even had this account... Good to be back.

I have to say I'm not very impressed with the current styles/colors for the crests. Hopefully there will be more options by launch.

i was thinking the same thing, but i dont see them going much more advanced than what they already have. one thing is for sure though, its a step up from XI.

Yeah, I don't really believe they will either; some additional styles would be neat. I agree though, it's definitely an upgrade.

yeah it is way better than what we had. Too bad it is still more limited than it could be... but it looks like there is a solid selection to be had.
