Worst FFXI MomentsFollow

I thought I'd make this in conjunction with the 'best moments' thread.

For me, I think it would have to be the time I spent several hours getting a party for the Promivions(sp?) only to get to the final boss and die with about 1% health left. This happened to me about 4 or 5 times. It was so incredibly frustrating that I think I gave up in FFXI for a little while. Of course, I was drawn back in eventually :)

I'm sure there are several in this community that have much worse/funny stories. It's just a testament to the 'fun level' of the game, though, that we all seemed to come back despite such hardships.

Didn't even have to think about that 1...0/40+(lost count) on Mee Deggi the Punisher...that was a personal vendetta I never got to finish. Even when I hit 75 and had other, better options I would sometimes go back to Oztroja just to leave with more impact knuckles...

Ugh... Without a doubt, getting the piece of my AF armor in GC. I didn't read up on the "hows" just the "where". I died something like 10x or more just getting this one piece. Eventually, me and 2 or 3 other people started working together to get all of our pieces, but this was a nightmare for me. ><

Learn from an old Tarutaru's mistakes kiddies, be prepared.

Hehe, I went to Mordion Gaol. It was such a long time ago, but there was an event happening to get the dandy glasses. I had touched the crystal thinking I'd get a shard, but no one had killed the mob yet so I went afk to cook some food. I came back to find myself logged out. I logged in and I was in Mordion Gaol. For those that don't know Mordion Gaol is basically prison in FFXI. It looks like somewhere in Horutoto Ruins, but without an exit.

The mob that pops attacks the last person that touches it, I found that out after I was doing massive research while I was waiting for the GM to talk to me. I guess I touched it last, and because I went afk, the mob was attacking me. I was level 75 so it was only doing a few points of damage, but still taking some damage. I remember having to heal up when I was in Mordion Gaol because I was low on HP.

Anyway, someone called a GM on me and they imprisoned me for "Holding a mob." I explained everything to the GM, and basically he said that I would be let go with a "Warning." He also stated that what happened to me was a small incident so I shouldn't worry too much, about the seriousness of it. Even still, I felt wrongly accused for something that I didn't do. But eh, yea worst moment of my career lol.

I know this will sound somewhat demented, but I was hoping I could have gotten a GM to send me to Mordion Gaol, just so that, from then on, I could do /sea Mordion or whatever the syntax would be and search who was in the zone Smiley: lol

There was a period of time where I couldn't log in to the game because the apartment I was in wouldn't open the ports on their network to give me access. That was some real ****.

There was also the time when I decided to change my character's name, back before server changes were implemented. I had to delete my character, which was a risky move. It worked, but I was sweating bullets during that week or so of waiting.

I don't remember my worst moment, but I'm sure it had to do with conflicts between people rather than a particular loss. For example, the time I was branded a racist and kicked out of a LS. Or that other time I was kicked out of a LS. Or that other time. There are plenty of people out there who just don't get along with someone like me. Not that I'm a troll or a drama queen or anything like that-- quite the opposite, but some people find me obnoxious and others conflictual. And while that's an inevitability of being an unusual person in a diverse social setting, it's never pleasant when someone uses their social status to ostracize you for your personal opinions/traits.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Right around the time gilsellers were invading sky on my server it was getting harder and harder to pop Byakko cause of the stone. Our LS decided to offer rolls on the Haidate for any group that camped up there and got Ullikummi. I was the first one there after we decided to try early in the day and there were a bunch of people there. I ran into the room and was just sitting there and a giant popped. I couldn't believe it and I shadowbound him. I had to kite him for like 5 minutes waiting for backup. We got him..... this wasn't the worst moment of course.

Come time to pop Byakko and we had 3 stones. My party consisted of a PLD, RNG, brd, whm, rng.
I came on rng because my main(nin) wasn't necessary. Well when my stone was suppose to be popped I wasn't in the group and I kept telling my LS that this was my groups stone. No one listened to me and the pants dropped. They ended up going to the other rng.... I couldn't believe it. They offered to let me in for the next ones to roll but I passed to the other groups that got them because I figured it wasn't fair. Oh well, tis life

Camping out for Shikigami's ToD - Trying to convince my LS (first HNMLS I was in) to come out and help kill him, getting the claim... getting the drop!!! then getting ******* D2'd by LS leader because he wanted to give it to his friend.

Then camping out for Shikigami's ToD - Getting a bunch of friends to help me take it down, turning up to the camp to find that one of my friends had invited all of his friends along to take down Shikigami for himself - and he got the claim... and the robe.

Then camping out for Shikigami's ToD - Get the linkshell to come out and help, we get claim, we got drop! I roll... eagerly awaiting my new robe, then I d/c only to be told by a GM afterward that I should have better luck next time. The drop ended up going to an LS member that didn't want it.

Followed by best moment ever:- More Shikigami.

Gave up on Shikigami weapon for the time being, was too annoying. Had been camping the thing for about 2 months only to be screwed in the most heinous of ways (see above). I log on and say hey to some friends then my bestest bud goes "Get to Shiki camp". I'm like "Yeah w/e", but he dragged me out there after much convincing. I get there to find all of my friends there and waiting to help me get the thing. We claimed, it dropped, I /cheered.

I'd have to say everything in game went smoothly for me, except the thing I really hated the most, and was part of my retirement, was going like 0/10 on swift belt. I know 0/10 doesn't seem like a big deal, but actually getting the group together and wiping so much in that stupid zone and the people that would get theirs and d/c and having to start over etc. etc. was SO frustrating, and I was never really in an LS that was spamming swift belt runs, I was in a social and a Sky/Sea LS.

I HATE swift belt.

The second time I went to Yuhtunga Jungle I joined a group to level. Without checking to see if I wanted to, the person that had invited me made me leader. We already had a few people so I didn't want to disband, and no one else wanted to lead. It was my first time as party leader and I didn't know the way to Yhoator since I had never planned to be leader. Nothing terrible happened, but it was pretty nerve-racking.

I originally put items up on the AH for the same amount as the tax, because I was an idiot. I was lucky never to have anyone get lucky and buy something for 15 gil or whatever the taxes were.

My first expensive item I had was Chainmail at level 24, and I was so proud I saved up the money to buy it. When the time rolled around for me to buy my next body piece, I was still putting items up for the tax price. I sold my chainmail and eagerly awaited my first payday in FFXI. The next day I checked my inbox and found a whopping 156 gil (I will never forget the number). The chainmail was selling for 16k at the time. I was DEVASTATED.

Buying a P. Charm for 1/13 it's price on the AH (1million instead of 13 million) only to have the seller harass me until I gave it back. Thinking back, I should have just called a GM, but I could earn gil fine and had (in my opinion) a better neck piece, anyway.

This starts an interesting sub-topic of its own: Personally, I would have based the decision on the person's initial approach.

"Hey, I'm sorry to bother you, but I noticed I accidentally mis-priced my peacock charm..." = Probably going to give it back (for the money)
"WTF ******* GIVE ME BACK MY CHARM YOU THIEF OR I'M GOING TO REPORT YOU TO A GM AND GET YOU BANNED" = Probably going to keep it.

I scored Hagun once for like 5k on AH. The old owner contacted me about a mispricing and I lol'd and walked away. IMO - Don't make the mistake! Well, months later I'm in a party talking about my good fortune with the sword - our PLD pipes up "Dude, that was me.". I felt bad and gave him 500k.

Wrong place to post this I know but....

I had a great moment when I was around level 30 and my LS leader sent me a whisper (tell - whatever it is called, it was years ago I quit FFXI) to go and buy a particular item in the AH for about 1000 gil. I went and bought it and then found out it was worth a fortune - I seem to remember it being 10m.

LS leader never told me how it happened (i think he must have listed it) but that money lasted me forever!

Finding out that "tag along" means I am questioning your competence/manhood in some parts of the world.

I don't even remember what we were doing, but we announced in shell we were doing it and anyone that wanted to could "tag along".

You would have thought we were killing puppies and eating them based on some peoples reactions.

The dam BLM AF pants. Need some key from the Elde(tab) Necropolis. For four weeks I dedicated 2 nights each week to building an alliance. You know, shout and some people want to help, some also want the key, some have a friend that will come.

Each time I would enter with something like ~18 and about 5~6 needed the key. In the worst string of lotting luck of all time. I managed to NEVER get a key. And I'm watching some fools who are the last to join, first to lot, and then take their key and leave. For them it took an hour tops. I spent at least 50+ hours making alliances and fighting liches.

Eventually I outleved the need for those pants anyway, got myself some Druid Slops. I know some people have far worse stories of how they never got something, but this is mine. /sadface

Seller was probably just trying to get away with paying less AH tax on the item and got burned.
Not sure what I would have done personally, but if someone was harrassing me, I'd be less inclined to help them out.

I don't really have any awful FFXI moments, just annoying ones...
-like constantly getting pot room trying to get to Kirin (never understood this annoyance SE!)
-losing NM pulls to people using bots or RMT

Can't really think of much other than that, my memories of FFXI are mostly all fantastic.

I've had a few bad moments here and there. I recently dug this one up from one of my very first posts on these forums:

Me, 6 years ago wrote:
Just thought i'd share a learning experience i had 'bout a week ago in the game:

I was making a run to Selbina to trade some moss that i had just farmed. After i zoned into Valkurm from the town, a large amount of ppl came running with trains in tow. No surprise there. I didn't have anything on schedule, and some of my ls mates were there, so i hung around for a little while helping out/showing off by killing trained mobs.

Just for kicks, i decided to really show off by using Eagle Eye Shot on one of the mobs. Hit for 1000-something damage (yey), and i was feeling quite high and mighty in front of the lvl 14 guys. It would come back to haunt me though.

More to the point, i started making my way back to Jeuno through Konschtatt Highlands. Did a casual wide scan and lo-and-behold, there was Steelfleece himself. I sprinted to the marker, and sure enough, there he was, with a slew of high and low levels alike all in close (but not too close) pursuit. A few of the high level guys, all around 50-60's, had allied up, and charged it. Not wanting to be left out of the fun, i begged for an invite.

Got the invite, and started the battle. I felt a little bit at a disadvantage, since i was using my thf sub (from farming) and had nothing on me but iron arrows (also for farming). No big deal, i thought. After all, i wasn't planning on being targeted during the fight. So i keep blasting away, as a couple high levels traded the difficult job of tanking it using Utsusemi.

It sure looked like we had it in the bag. Steelfleece was down to about 400-500 hp i'd wager, when suddenly our tank went down. Not sure what went wrong, but it wasn't a huge surprise. Another ranger took the hate, but he didn't last more than 15 seconds. It ended up coming down to me and a drg as the last two in Steelfleece's way. But we were almost there!

As i'm scanning my menu's, Steelfleece, finished with every other target, turns 180 degrees and centers his attention on me.

(I think my entire dorm hallway heard me yell "OH ****")

I'm frantic now....I go for every desperation move i've got.
Not enough TP for a weaponskill....no luck there. My HP is dropping fast. I bring up my job abilities menu....no barrage. Thats ok, i've always got my trump card....Eagle Eye Shot will finish this overgrown sheep once and for all....

oh....no....

Eske was defeated by Steelfleece

and the moral of the story is.....

Not my proudest moment! Smiley: lol

I also accidentally got myself killed in the very back of the "Old Sabertooth" cave with all the tigers once. I had been farming the tigers there, got too cocky, and wandered into the very back. Two spawned on top of me while I was already in mid-battle, and I died and deleveled. Of course, I lost the ability to use half of my equipment, since I had just upgraded to a lot of new gear, and had no backups on me. I think I even lost the ability to equip my bow.

I would have just had to accept the lost level, and rebuy equipment again, but thankfully a WHM from my LS made a long trip out to revive me and powerlevel me back to my original level. Quite a lucky break, and I was very humbled by the whole thing.

Hubris can certainly get a Ranger into trouble!

Worst FFXI moment is hard to choose since they're all so epic/fun, even when things take a turn for the ugly. I'd prolly say the worst moment was this one time we were running one of the Dynamis' and the AF2 for ranger hat dropped, and I was new to the whole dynamis scene and didn't know that most LS rules say that you cannot loot on your first run, so of course I lotted, got the hat, and was ecstatic until the leader made me hand it over. I almost didn't, since I'm stubborn but I guess the good ol' concise kicked in. Needless to say, I was ****** as fuh.

:)

This reminded me of a moment that could qualify as a worst moment but I find it hilarious. My first job ever was BLM. Getting home after a night of drinking I decide to log on and try and find a party. I get an invite so off I go to the dunes. I get to the oasis and it is popping, with 2 other parties besides mine. Things went well for a few pulls, then alcohol reminded me just who was in charge. Seeing double, I accidently cast Stonega on the next clipper pulled, which brings every clipper, leech and I think even a fly a'runnin'. Embarrassing, right? It gets worse... My party lead, a noob like me, calls for help. Now, I know you're thinking: "No one in their right mind would jump into that mess!" and you're right. No one except another noob. Long story short, people that didn't know better were jumping in and being all heroic and noble and dead...except for the one veteran player that ran for Selbina when the massacre started. He comes back and shouts "Need 17 [Raise]s @ the oasis, [Please assist]". So amongst the shouted laughter and replies a WHM and RDM and a PLD show up and start raising people. There were people just passing by that stopped to look at the carnage. People were sending mass notifications to their LS to come see the body count. There were people riding up on choco's to check it out after a friend had sent them a tell. People were taking screenshots, some even posing in the dog pile of bodies. Whenever someone asked what happened all I saw was:

Definitely could have been a worst moment but the really cool part was no one was ******* everyone thought it was the funniest thing...though I did get threatened with death if anyone saw me playing as BLM again. So started my carrer as a THF which ended up @ DNC75.

next worst ffxi moment

doing and breaking my first adaman hauberk synth when they were 25mil or so
just for the hauberk and about 35 mil for the whole synth and having a critical loss

that hurt that day

I'd have to say the worst was when I came back to the game excited to play with my friends again after a 6 month break. My linkshell was broken and all of my friends from it were split all over the place. What made it even worse was finding out all the ridiculous rumors and events that lead to it breaking. That was the beginning of the end of my FFXI playing days.

What's cool is most of the people that night ended up playing for awhile and we would always run into each other during parties and missions...I was known as Epic Wipe Guy for awhile :P
