Since the OK has been given to post beta content, here's some of my impressions as a miqote botanist.

First of all the graphics are amazing and so far things run smoothly for the most part, even with several hundred other players around me. I scored 1,700 on a laptop.

The gathering system is very fun and is interactive, with little "mini-games" for logging and fishing and all that. Not just simply pressing a button and waiting.

The cutscenes are amazing, so are the character expressions and emotions. For players who roleplay, I doubt that you will find another MMO that's as good for that as this one. This is one of the most, if not the most, immersive games I've ever played in my life.

I haven't really tried the battle system yet apart from getting my **** kicked from a rat since I'm a botanist and all, but it seems really fun.

You guys will like the game.

In Phase 2 I did a bit of Treasures of the Main and what I felt was the best improvement over the quest system in XI is that once you do a certain task, your journal will update the quest text with further instructions. That was seriously one of the most annoying and vague parts of XI for me.

Yeah I love how the quests expand and how they all play out through that system.

Also, character development in this game is astronomical. They weren't joking. I haven't tinkered with it much yet but I love it. More customization than you can shake a stick at.

And about 22 or so slots for equipment too. Insane.

So how long did it take to design your characters? I'm worried all my friends will get ahead of me while I'm in the character creator. Also what are the NPC names like? Does each race have their own naming style like in FFXI?

Each race has their own naming style.

Designing a character can take a long time if you're picky. If you already have an idea in mind it might only take like 10 minutes. If you want to experience EVERYTHING in the creation process it could take at least an hour.

Each race has their own naming style I think, mainly the Miqo'te. I can't remember them off-hand but they're similar to my name. Usually something like R'jubhra or something.

YESSS. I love this. I've been reading some mostly negative beta critiques, so it's refreshing to read some cool, positive feedback about how "crafting-gathering" classes will be much more -- not just click and wait, which is a relief. Also, everything looks good, even at 1.7k on a laptop? Awesome...! :D

This is good news for me, thank you, rate up.

My mothers desktop averages 1,800 on the benchmark for low. Her vid card is junk, so thi gives a bit of hope that I'll be able to wait on building my own pc for a little while, or just wait for the ps3 version.

I love the new crafting/gathering system as well as the journal and new class system. Graphics are amazing, guildleves are fun. And it's great to see linkshells, macros, and the old races come back. The new combat is shaping up to be pretty interesting. I could go on and on. Game looks great.

Now I just hope they are able to iron all the bugs and kinks out, because I've been getting quite a few of them, from minor hitches to crashes. I guess that's why we are testing the game though. :P

I'm really glad they kept some similarities to FFXI, but I'm also glad they overhauled a lot of stuff too... Don't get me wrong, FFXI was an amazing game, probably my favorite game of all time... But that game had a good run, and I'm looking forward to see SE take another crack at an MMO, and can't wait to give it a try at launch. I'm also very glad they kept the mixed worldwide servers... I always thought that was an interesting twist, being able to jump in a party with players from around the world.

Oh and one thing that sticks out a bit... Is that you level ridiculously fast now... I'm kind of hoping that's only temporary. It's really one of the only complaints I have so far. I hit level 7 in like 3 minutes... I mean, I know people want there to be a little less grinding, but I don't want to just shoot straight to endgame either... I had a lot of fun on the long road to max level back in FFXI.

what was your starting city?
nevermind, I remembered :P

A few questions, if you don't mind...
How might you defend yourself as a botanist (against aggro mobs, for instance)?
Tell me about physical level verses class rank.

The game looks great. Your avatar is cute.

Referencing FFXIVbeta2.jpg.. . .I see what I used to call "tearing" [the white dots about 30 right of center in the rocks]

FFXI used to do that to me fairly frequently, is that relatively normal in XIV as well?

The tearing is probably because I'm playing on a laptop with a middle-class video card with the graphics turned down in settings slightly.

Here are some questions I have not seen answered by beta testers

1. What are stats like for each race
2. How big are the areas/regions (that you could see)
3. Any pictures on how changing weapons affect abilities/class/whatever
4. Benchmark vs. playing with computer specs, how well did the benchmark match up.

Thanks for your time

1. I'm pretty sure all stats for all characters and all classes start out the exact same. You customize your stats yourself as you level and can reassign at will.

2. Massive, but I haven't explored too much yet.

3. Changing weapons instantly affects your class, but you can mix abilities in from other classes.

4. Benchmark is a lie.

Hrm... thanks for the info. I have a thought that maybe they will not do stat differences until the release date to maybe hide that information from people.

Some more questions:

1. Also I just thought about what weapons went with each class? Do you know of any combinations? Have you leveled any weapons up to see what abilities they enabled or perhaps weapon skills? Are there any race restrictions on any weapons that you saw?

2. Does armor have any affect on your abilities/skills? Also are there limitations on class/races for certain armor that you saw?

Thanks for your time.

1. That's more than one question lol.

1a. You can find that information online. Some classes have more than one particular weapon associated with them.

1b. I haven't played around with combinations, the skills weren't working right for me (I think they had them turned off for this beta or I was not doing something right).

1c. I only got botanist up a few ranks and leveled fisherman one rank. Botanist uses hatchet and fisherman uses a rod.

1d. I don't think anything in this game is race-restricted.

2. Yes armor has a major effect on your skills. Armor has an optimal rank and some are restricted to certain classes.

Read somewhere that there would be NPCs with generic names running around, seperating them from quest, story, shop, etc. NPCs...

That is a good idea, I just hope they give them less generic names though. Don't mind some humor in a game but not when npcs have names such as "Armor Person" and such, not that I am saying the names are that bad though.

I am thinking of making a thread where people place their computer specs, benchmark scores, and then their thoughts on the quality of play in the game.

Here's the list of servers. I don't know if this is beta-exclusive, but it's most likely the case. However, if they will also be in retail, you can choose which one you and your friends will be joining.

Garland
Gabranth
Emperor
Golbez
Kefka
Exdeath
Jecht
Sephiroth
Ultimecia
Shadowlord

I'm currently on Jecht. I am avoiding Sephiroth like the plague.

If they're the same when the retail version comes out I'll probably be on Garland. My friend objects to Jecht because he thinks he's dumb.

I hope it's something like, generic "Armorer" by default, but when you learn the npcs name from talking to them, or from another npc it changes to their non-generic name.

So while there will be characters always named Armorer, all of the important ones will have more appropriate names.

Fairly certain the benchmark was only relevant at the time it came out, assuming there's been massive overhauls to make the game much more efficient ( as in run MUCH better on lower end machines ) and that the benchmark simply hasn't been updated to reflect the changes made. To the OP, you sir have made me a much happier man now that i have something to oogle at till Sept. 22nd ^^

I like that idea; the first time you see a npc you know their job, and by default their location, after that you will know their name and where they are. That is a compromise I could live with.

Here is a question -

Guardian I assume to be a "tank" class

The rest I assume to be some form of DPS except the Mages -

Are the mages Support or DPS or heal or...

Are the roles defined yet? Or are they more equalized?

Guardian is your religion per se. It's the god you worship.

Gladiator is the "tank" class I would imagine.

Each class has a plethora of different traits and like I said you can mix and match. So there is no particular class dedicated to a role I don't think.

I'm sure it plays a major role since one of the stats you can put points in, "Piety", means how devoted you are to worship. I think it might have a luck-based trait. Plus, you gain favour from your god through guildleves. I'm not too sure about the guardian thing I think more is to come for that in the future.

When you say that does it mean they do massive damage, or that they can take massive damage? Or perhaps they have the ability to call down lightning on all their foes and wipe them from the earth while doubling experience points and giving out free cake.

Nvm, I understand now what guardian is. Sorry about that.
