I think a better question is, why pay to play a buggy version of the game a month before retail?

I could see if it was back in June where you were getting June - Sept, but just the second half of August through release seems silly to pay for to me.

Still, it's only $7 so it's not like it's -that- much money I guess... regardless, it kinda stinks of microtransactions, albeit loosely.

I renewed my annual subscription for FFXIV, but I'll be getting access to a lot more than just FFXIV beta, SWTOR comes to mind not to mention any other beta events for upcoming games next year (c'mon Diablo3!!!).

Honestly I've played through nearly every MMO beta for the past few years and i've just gotten used to it, and not being one of those "ZOMG XX doesn't work so it means it won't ever get fixt on live this game SUX" really makes it a much more enjoyable experience. Figuring out what job/profession you're going to go on live a month in advance doesn't hurt either, makes those 8 days in advance well worth it.

Well yeah, Betas are SUPPOSED to be broken, that's why they're "Beta tests" and not "pre-release demos".

Honestly I get annoyed at people who -whine- about beta bugs instead of reporting them.

It's funny because they don't know exactly what they're getting themselves into. Their frustration brings me pleasure.

Just a hunch... but I am guessing they will probably start giving out beta keys at 12AM PDT... which is in 5 and a half hours? Just a hunch though, we'll see what happens :o
