Was if Square-Enix partnered with Game Stop/Best Buy to set up a beta machine in each of their stores to preview so those of us who fail at lotteries could watch some play, maybe get 5-10 minutes of hands-on per person (depending on the line).

Yeah, like at those game booths they always have at the front of the store, that'd be great advertising!

My thinking was how would you reach the greatest amount of people, and partnering with a game store with wide distribution would be easiest way to hit every metropolitan area. This would be just for the U.S. of course, I think the U.K could do something with Game I think it is (I remember going to that store when I was in England), and other countries I'm sure have little chains for what this might be a viable system.

Would be cool, and in this town I might be able to get away with hogging it most of the day while most people walk in for Madden. That's not the purpose of the beta though. It would do more harm than good. People would assume it's a demo, try it, and leave thinking "Well I'll never get that game."

Considering how many people base their opinion on a first impression basis I dunno. I mean, there are a lot of people in beta complaining about several issues as if they were playing the released version, and they know they are in beta, they signed up for it and should realize they are there to test the game, improve it. I mean, even here there seems to be problems and so showcasing a game that is still in beta to a lot of people who won't be aware that it is a beta, maybe not even know what beta means might not be the best idea if they want to market the game. Videos etc is probably better imo. That being said, it would be fun with something like you suggested.

EDIT: Owl beat me to it, sorry, didn't really read the whole thread before posting, that'll teach me heh.

yea no i dont think that would work. a Beta is not a free preview. Besides it sort of defeats the purpose of the NDA which is still semi in effect. Not to mention that if you were playing in a store you would almost definetly not take the time to report bugs which is sorta the point of a Beta. I am with everyone else in wanting an invite. but giving away free turns on the beta defeats the purpose of a beta.

This seems like it would result in a male equivalent of women fighting over a purse in a department store.
Edit: I guess there are a lot more women playing these games now though, hmmm.

The beta is not a "free preview" of the game, it's a testing phase for improving the game.

I could be mistaken, but weren't the later phases of the beta about getting multiple worlds up with many users and keeping them up for stability, in addition to testing things such as the peer to peer based client distribution? I would think that feedback on things such as leves and leveling are likely set in stone and discarded, but feedback concerning client installation and updates is probably more what they're looking for. Also, since beta keys are being distributed to things like fan-sites and other things (like FilePlanet), it seems like they are entering a marketing phase now which would run alongside the stress tests. How many people in an area, how many people on a world, etc.
