Ok for others in the beta, how the **** do you do synthesis? I have tried several times now and can only get the progress bar to like 15-20% before it runs out of durability and breaks.

Several of the activities in the game are kinda....odd, but the system they use for crafting takes the cake so far. Any advice would be appreciated.

Depends what you're synthing. At the beginning when you have 0 skill, even basic production synths (like making ingots, threads etc) will fail a fair amount. I find just hammering "quick synth" seems to have more success. If your elemental energy becomes unstable, wait it out one or two times if you can spare it, but dont wait any more than twice in a row.

Other than that, just keep going. As I say most things will fail until you have a few levels under your belt and get the "feel" for how synthing works.

Even more WTF is that you don't seem to be able to find recipes from an NPC anywhere, it's guessing. Wha?

I found that paying the 50gil for the "synth support" at your local craft store helps tremendously keep you crystal stable. I paid for the support and got 3 crafts hammered out so fast @ rank1 smithing skill it was ridiculous.
I tried redo the leve again now as rank2 smithing and skimped on the support and uber fail w/o ever making it past 20% on all 3 attempts. (doing standard synth only as the control)

@pikko

If you've done the "local levequests" you'll see a few basic recipes.

I highly recommend

for your FFXIV craft recipe needs. It is a player-driven WIP.

sll the recipes i learned in beta i learned by just asking nearby pc's. as long as youre polite and thank them you should have no problem learning anything they can teach.

but yeah, the addition of the local leves sure as heck helped. its one of the things they changed from beta 2 that really is helping this game come together. i do like the idea of some recipes being unknown, or at least not explictly given away. itd be nice if a crafter was given the necessary ingredients for 3/5's of a high level weapon, but had to figure out the rest on their own, either thru straight brute force (try everything until we get something!) or by doing some in-game detective work, say, via a quest, or even by an application of good old intuition and logic (using redwood to make a bow might result in higher item durability whereas using yew could result in higher damage. or something like that).

The proceeding is what I think is going on, and could be wrong.

Think of it like this:

Rapid Synthesis - lowest durability hit, lowest quality, highest progress
Standard Synthesis - medium in everything, perhaps slightly higher chance to succeed
Bold Synthesis - highest durability hit, highest quality, lowest progress

If it's something you are having trouble making reliably with standard, do rapid every turn. When it succeeds you will get a massive boost to progress, sometimes close to 30%. However, don't do rapid if your craft is sputtering and sparkling. It has a very high chance to fail at this stage and the durability penalty for failing a rapid synth at this point is enormous. Try to wait it out.

For Guildleves, the reward is directly tied to the quality of your finished synths. Firstly, try to finish all three or however many you get. Then, try doing rapid up to about 75%, and if your durability is still pretty high, do some standard to get your quality up. If it's something you can do pretty reliably with standard, try it.

Bold Synthesis is for recipes that are far under your skill level. It has a low chance to succeed on synths that are even to your skill and lower, and murders your durability whether or not you blow it up. Succeeding on a bold synth when your item is in either stage of instability gives you tons of quality, but like rapid, if you blow it up (you're going to blow it up) be ready to take an even bigger durability hit.

one of the guys in the beta has put together a nice little crafting recipe site.

http://www.socsclan.com/index.php

It has a pretty nice list, but it still is a work in progress.
