Isn't open beta the "free demo" beta where people get a chance to play the game to see if they wanna buy it? I mean people say the beta we are in now is a "real" beta when people complain about the UI and chat system and such. So is this open beta gonna be some new form of open beta where its not actually a playable demo?

i think open beta is more to test the weight on the servers; close beta for bugs & player opnion on the game

Yeah, open beta is the point where they play "how many people can we jam on one server at a time before it blows up?" So they figure out server capacity before launch.

Betas are not Demos. Publishers who label betas as demos are like stores that label subs as burgers.

Oh cause when I compared this beta to other betas ive been in people told me that ffxiv beta is different, its a true beta and all the other games i beta tested I was actually just playing pre release polished demos.

From everything I have read and seen, that seems about right. The trend really does seem to be leaning towards Open Betas as server capacity/demo/hype trials than a final stage of testing.

That's because some other developers are herpderpariffic and release demos and call them betas.

I always understood an open beta to be "open" to the general public. Meaning, that an application process wasn't necessary. SE really does have their own way of doing things.

Originally, "open betas" were just the beta stage when the NDA was dropped ("closed betas" still having the NDA enforced), but with the last few years of MMO releases, the idea of an open beta where anyone can jump in without an application has sprung up.

Best answer: the developer makes the rules; go with however they set it up.

When they say it won't be like other betas, they mean stuff like vendors not having all of the items they would normally have.

I don't think i've seen an armor merchant yet in FFXIV. They have been forcing people to craft items in order to test the crafting system. In other words, when you play, the gameplay will be severely limited to force players to only be able to play the areas of the game that SE wants tested. This has led to the numerous "Theres no content in this game, it's not ready for release!" threads.

Also, beginning of beta II they did about 3 tests where they gave a starting time for the tests, I think this was the main method of testing server congestion. They did it first by region, and then a world wide one. Every time something crashed at first and things then smoothed out after an hour. I would expect to see the same thing when this "open beta" starts. An hour of server crashes before everything works fine.
