with the new pics of ingame shots of Gridania and Ul'Dah, which city will you be considering for your first char?

i originally was loving the idea of Ul'dah, seemed like it was modeled after an awesome middle easternish modern day alexandria. alas however, it proved to be as colorless as bastok so im thinking Gridania for now.

I'm going for Gridania right now because from what I've heard it's much like Windurst. I have to admit the music in Windurst really got on your nerves after awhile but I still liked the city.

Ul'Dah cuz it reminds me so much of FFXII's estersands and Yam Nemsa and whatever other sand sea in the game, I loved those areas.

Rivendell Gridania looks amazing, but Ul'dah fits my character better. And it's going to be epic.

After being the Beta grounds for so long, Limsa is going to be like an abandoned amusement park. Poor pirates.

Still not 100% but leaning towards Ul'Dah. Seems like a LOT of people are planning to start in Gridania so it might be a little crowded there. I'm still waiting on more info like ; will choice of gods affect crafting etc. ,where all the different guilds will be, will there be a bonus if you start the proper race in starter city like the rings in FFXI .etc. etc. Would be nice if SE could start weekly updates on the official game site with new info, not much time left before the game launches...

I got to get these names down. I still don't know them. :/

Whatever the foresty one is, Gridiana. I hated Windurst (because it was too maze like) but the new screens I saw look too good. The other cities don't seem to have a lot of character.

(and this is from a guy who started in Bastok...)

totally agreed, i started in Windy and regreted it after i realized its location in relation to leveling and other cities, on top of its size and mazeyness. But gridania might be the best looking so far. i wonder why they didnt show much of the inside of Uldah though. they showed some cool architecture in gridania but pretty much nothing of Ulda other than some bland walls.

I still really like the look of Gridania, I'm just a bit concerned over how many people picked it in the beta contests. Ul'dah doesn't look bad either, though. I never did like Windurst in XI, and although the city may resemble that, the starting area is what I'm more interested in. It certainly reminds me more of Ronfaure or the area outside of Al Zhabi.

yeah I am worried about crowding in Gridania myself but I can't resist the lush green scenery - plus it looks to be in the middle of the continent... which might make unlocking more crystal points easier

"before it runs off and is felled by the coliseum champion.

Whispers of war with the nearby Garlean empire and suspicions over a religious cult fill the streets… was the monster’s rampage the result of sabotage by one of them?"
well for those who didnt read, this is part of Uldahs story line, much cooler than Gridanias to me! maybe i just might start off in uldah, considering its just a starting zone anyway.

Wonder if open beta would allow access for all 3 cities that would make my choice easier but the likelihood of that is way low but hey, I can dream can I? ; ;

I remember when the concept art of the three cities were released and a lot of people said they would start in Limsa Lominsa. Looks like people got bored of it (I know I did) once beta came. For me right now I'm leaning towards Ul'dah because I like the idea of power being held by the syndicates while the Sultan seems more like a figure head. Makes me wanna find out more about it! But still considering Gridania too, for now I'm just waiting for more screenshots before I make my decision.

War, religious cults, monsters, sabotage??

All major selling points. :D What does Gridania have as a storyline? A wolf / boar infestation that must be dealt with ASAP? Bahaha!

yeah they already said that the two other cities will be selectable upon open beta. i personally think limsas pirate feel to be waaaaaay to cheesey and campy so i dont blame anyone for not selecting it on game release.
wonder why they didnt create a smaller more basic starting zone for beta so there would be less of a bias on selecting starting zones on release day. I mean, they seem to waste their time on other trivial crap im sure they could have made temp start zone for beta.

Ul'Dah for sure. As a native of Bastok, Ul'Dah will give me that familiar, comfortable, feeling when I go out leveling for the first time.

At first I wasn't so sure as I heard the Goldsmithing guild was going to be in LL. But now that it's confirmed to be available in Ul'Dah, that sealed the deal.

agreed w/ all the Ul'Dah people. It looks like a more badass Bastok, which just sounds fun. Although Gridania does look cool... I'll have to think about where my Hellsguard Rogaedyn will fit best, but most likely Ul'Dah.

I know Limsa is getting a lot of flack in this thread, but the truth is it's really quite a beautiful city. It's complex and interesting, and the view of oceans and grassy cliffs is really quite lovely. Even the outlying areas around the city are gorgeous, something like a really evolved La Theine or Konschtat. I've finished all of the storyline that I am allowed at present and I have to say it's pretty engaging and enjoyable.

That being said, if I have to watch that opening cutscene from Limsa one more time I may murder something >_> between benchmarks, starting new characters and new beta phases I've watched that cutscene in its entirety something like 12 times. @_@ When that cute little taru yells "Land Ho!!" I cringe, what used to be cute is now totally annoying lol.

Since the time I first read about Gridania I knew I wanted to start there, and the recent images of the city have only heightened that desire. The city is beautiful, it feeds into my love of nature and color, and it's nestled within a huge forest. It reminds me a bit of Zi'Tah, which was hands down my favorite area in XI. Do love.

In XI I started and stayed in Bastok. It didn't have those annoying Elvaan with the crazy bagpipe music nor was it a shiny green everywhere city filled with little ankle biters that talked like they had speech impediments.

From the pictures and videos I've seen each city has elements from both San d'Oria and Windurst both cities I disliked in XI. Nothing seems to feel like Bastok to me.

Limsa Lominsa feels like a giant harbor to me with the surrounding areas that look like La Theine Plateau. It seems like it's a pain in the *** to move around the city.

Gridania looks way too much like Windurst to me and boy did I dislike Windurst.

Ul'Dah seems to remind me most of Bastok but again it's surrounding areas look way too much like Tahrongi Canyon and Meriphataud Mountains. I remember trying to maneuver around Meriphataud Mountains as a low level noob. /cringe

I suppose I'm leaning towards either Ul'Dah or Limsa Lominsa. I'll probably create a character in both areas to see which is least unappealing. I really wish they made an area that resembled Bastok more though. Blarg I say, BLARG!

YES! That's exactly how I feel about it, too! I'm not sure what I was expecting, knowing that it was a desert environment, but my gut reaction after seeing Ul'dah was to flee to Limsa Lominsa and start there. In the end, though, I like the city of Ul'dah too much to abandon it.

Still Ul'dah for me. Meanwhile everyone is saying that Ul'dah reminds them of Bastok; looking at screens LL looks like Jeuno and Bastok merged together. To me anyway.

Gridania I think for the botanist and leathercraft guilds.
If Ul'Dah ends up having botany and LC guilds as well, I'll probably flip a coin.
