Hello there! I just wanted to ask your opinion.

Recently, SE seems to have "modernized" it's stance on in-game items obtained with RL-cash.
I know, we had stuff like the tidal talisman before, but honestly... If I really wanted
to have the best possible start in FFXIV, it now sums up to the following:

Cash-shop item / requirements to obtain / RL money required:

Onion Helm / Pre-order the CE / $65
Garlond Googles / Pre-order the RE / $50
Asuran Armbands / Pre-order FFXIII (a totally unrelated game, mind you!) / $50
Mercury shoes / Have at least one active character in FFXI / $9(Steam)+$7(reduced monthly fee)

Now I won't do anything but the first, but somehow I don't like the way this is going.
Modern times? Perhaps. But I surely don't like RMT, no matter whether it is done by
illegal Chinese or legal Japanese gilsellers.

Headgear is restricted to one per account. Also, you get it FREE with the game, no pre-order required.
FFXIII Asuran Armbands do not require you to buy the game, or even rent it. Just go get the registration code from an open box at your local gamestop or from someone who owns the game but dislikes MMOs.
Hermes- Merely requires an active FFXI account linked to your SE account when you create your first character. Steam is not required, but you can generally get the full game cheaper from them during promotions.
I believe I covered everything, yes?

A) This totally needed it's own thread.

B) You're reducing most of these things to make them seem sinister. What company doesn't offer something extra these days when you pre-order? Get Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and you get a unique multiplayer costume, Call of Duty: Black Op's CE gives you an RL remote control car. Plus, to say they're charging your "$65" (even though the CE is $75) is stretching to make your point. The CE especially comes with so many other things. If you look at the fact that you get a security token and a free month subscription, that's almost the extra $25 right there.

In reality, you don't have to have any of these things. All these bonuses are novelties that will be nothing more than aesthetics after about a month. It's not like they're saying "hey, send us a check for $50 and we'll send the best armor in the game to your delivery box!"

All-in-all, until the items shift from useless trinkets to the only way to get the best gear, it's sort of a moot point.

I hope that SE have not softened their stance on RMT as it will generally ***** up the ingame economy and cause other issues.

I think your comments are valid but I think there were other goals in mind with some of these benefits.

1) SE do not want to lose players from XI with the release of XIV so they are providing a "loyalty bonus" of sorts. This does not mean they support RMT - just that they care about existing XI players and would like to keep the game going.

2) CE is a fairly common idea these days and amounts to segregating your market (in the same way you can buy business class or economy class flights). The segregation increases profits overall. I also think that the change in release date was due to SE wanting to stagger the server loading to make sure they cope OK.

3) Pre-ordering at all is about creating some hype at the retail end and getting an indication of likely sales volumes. By offering an incentive, you encourage more hype.

Overall, I take your point, but I hope that the legitimate reasons for offering these benefits do not spill over into a softening of the stance on RMT overall.

It all started in 1988.. When the evil Squaresoft corporation charged innocent Japanese game enthusiasts money to pay their new flagship title, Final Fantasy.

And it's only gotten worse since then (is that even possible?)

You forgot to add in:

The cost of gas to drive to the store (Or the cost of shipping)
The cost of time you could have been at work

Geez.

Difference being the functionality of the item you're talking about in WoW is available everywhere else in game already. I'm curious if the effects of these items will be available somehow with in-game means... I think the OP has a point, because I doubt they will be.
