Naming and character slot(s) questions in FFXIV.Follow

Let me apologize in advance if the forum has seen this question asked before, but I don't frequent the board too much since I stopped playing FFXI and I am trying to do a media blackout of FFXIV so it will all seem gloriusly new and exciting like I remember FFXI was when I first started playing it.

I did notice that it seems that you can get a first and last name in FFXIV, but I want to know if you have to get a last name... or can you just go by one name and not have to figure out a last name.

If I have to choose a last name then that will give me something to think about for the next month... and hopefully keep me on my media blackout, but I am hoping I don't have to have two names... =/

Also, one more thing.... has anyone heard of how SE is going to handle additional characters thi stime around. Will it be the normal $15ish/month for one character and each additional character slot $1/month more? Or will FFXIV let you have a couple of characters for a set price?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You must choose a last name.

As for price, I can't remember what the base price is. Additional characters are $3 each.

From what I gather (correct me if I'm wrong):

The last name is mandatory.

The extra character slot is $3.00.

The sub fee is $12.99.

$12.95 for the base subscription, which includes a retainer.
$3 for extra playable characters.
$1 for extra retainers.

Wasn't your first mule free, or was that just the retainer?
Wow, $3 a character, they're going to make a lot of money if they keep the Point Allotment system the way it is.
Mage Character, Frontline Character, Tank Character, and that's if your lucky.
I guess it depends on what you want to do.

Wait, the $3 isn't added to the $12.99 subscription fee, right? It's just a straight-up $3 purchase...right?

I don't know, in FFXI it was an extra $1 per mule. $3 seems like a little much, especially with the way it's limited right now. If things stay the way they are you can only really keep one job maxed per character unless you want to spend a few hours changing attributes every day. I'm not questioning the system because I have no idea the overall effects it will have on the game or if it will even be implemented the same way, from a monetary standpoint though it seems like your getting a lot less for your money.

Keep dreaming? Really? You think adding $3 PER EXTRA CHARACTER to the sub fee makes more sense?

All right, then.

Or is it $3/mo extra for an infinite supply (or a specific amount) of extra character slots? That'd make a bit more sense...

I don't think they said it because they thought it was reasonable and makes total sense. They meant keep dreaming as in, this is a modern video game company and that's what they do. It's 12.99/month and a free retainer, $1 for each additional retainer, $3 for each additional char...

Accept in FFXIV, as in XI, you can do all those things on one character, so no need to shell out the extra dough to try other classes.

Just make sure you LOVE -- and I can't stress that enough -- your character.
In other words, if you're considering rolling a male Hyur midlander, you might want to reconsider.

What exactly is a retainer?

You know... other than a teeth/mouth implement that you wear after getting braces removed.

If I understand correctly, it's your bazaar mule and it always stays logged in.

Read the fine orange print, $3 per extra playable character per period, $1 per retainer per period.

Egh, that's just 1 day I don't send my kids with lunch money per month, guess they'll bring in leftovers...

This is true, unless I have been misinformed though you can only change a small percentage of your attributes every so often. (Taking multiple hours to completely change from max stats.)

The solution to this obviously is to keep your attributes average across the board instead of maxing a select few if you want to play multiple jobs. Using this method though means that you will never be exceptional in any one class.
So if you really want to play each job with the best possible stats it seems you will have to have multiple characters, at least using the current method.

It just seems like quite a coincidence that they would raise the price per character and then create a system that encourages the haijin crowd (Sorry I can't think of the english word for hardcore players atm.) to make multiple characters.
