I know there's the few threads suggesting port forwarding & such around here, including this one...I don't know, maybe it's location & connection? I don't use a router so I'm avoiding any issues there...there could be ISP issues?

Despite jumping ahead of you, it still fluctuates and looks like it'll take a good while either way...

Well.. on the bright side, if you're uploading to other people, it probably means your ports are good. On the down side, maybe your ISP is throttling.

What's your theoretical max download speed?

Also, bear in mind that if you're uploading at absolute maximum potential, that can hinder your download speed.

I have a 20MB down connection [1.5 MB up] and dual lan on my motherboard [allows me to bridge 2 ethernet connections together for increased bandwidth].

Ports forwarded, firewall off, antivirus de-activated, network protocols as tweaked as I can get them.

54 remote, 7 local [was 8, ><]

And I'm seeing the exact same thing. It's gone up to 307k/sec, drops down to 54.

At some points, it almost seems like upload bandwidth is choking off download bandwidth. Then
upload speeds back off and I get a download burst, then back to 100-125k for a lil bit.

I'm watching it while I'm typing this, it just said 157k/sec @ 5 hours, then the thing goes positively
nuts with activity, only the reported D/L speed goes DOWN [87k/sec] yet reports 3 hours.

Call me crazy, but I don't think the GUI counter is reliable ;)

I dunno how to control my upload rate. and I've never downloaded anything faster than 400-410KBpS so I guess that's my max.

Weird that for literally one second the client spiked to 800kbPs

Hey...sorry for asking a noob question but I can't find my problem anywhere.

I'm currently patching the game and the patcher just went black. It's still running (I think) and the music is still playing, but I can't see anything.

If I close it and restart it, will it continue from where it left off or would I have to do it all over again? It just kills me not to know what % I am at.

I'll rate up any answers.

I bet local connections are how many people are connected to you (people you are uploading to) and remote would be people you are downloading from.

(maybe it's the other way around)

It's like BitTorrent, I think. When you have multiple connections to people, it basically means more data being sent between you and others, so basically helps you get faster download speeds. (I think).

Pretty sure it's using the BitTorrent setup... I've heard people have extracted the torrent info and downloaded the beta using their normal torrent client.

WoW is the same way. Just fancy little updaters that use torrent protocols.

Yeah, I tried doing that, but no dice.

I did everything it said to (90% sure anyway), but it wouldn't do that "Checking xx.x%" thing it usually does.

Windows 7 people who are having trouble can try this. Maybe it'll work for you.
Link: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/284347/client-download-speed.html

Quote:
How to DL as a torrent in Windows 7 !

Firstly keep your current download through the SE installer running

Go to windows:

My computer-> C: -> Users -> David (or whatever your name/folder is) -> My documents -> My Games -> Final Fantasy 14 beta -> downloads -> ffxiv-beta ->

From here you will see a folder for each of the installers. The first folder is Bca2a~~~~

The large one that most people are trying to get is d96437e6, open this folder. Open the folder inside named "metainfo"

Here you will see the torrent file named H2010.08.10.2000

Open this file (i used Utorrent as my client) and set the place for it to the same as where we looked at the start of my post

My computer-> C: -> Users -> David (or whatever your name/folder is) -> My documents -> My Games -> Final Fantasy 14 beta -> downloads -> ffxiv-beta ->

Don't select folder d96437e6

now press/click ok.

You will now see that the entry in Utorrent says "checking xx.x%" and will works its way up to 100% at which point the download %age in Utorrent and the SE installer will match.

Now you can close the SE installer window by clicking the cancel button. You should now see better speeds for downloading.

Make sure DHT is on by going to (in Utorrent) Preferences->Bittorent:
Enable DHT network
Enable DHT on new torrents
Enable Local peer discovery

Please be a good person, appreciate you have downloaded faster and therefore share what you have downloaded. Either keep Utorrent open for a while afterwards or reopen it for atleast a few hours sometime later on (when eating, when leaving your pc for some amount of time). We've helped you get it faster, you can help others get it faster.

Guide by Evielar.
Goodluck.

Feel free to copy and paste this, please keep the credits at the bottom smile

edit: make sure you have started the download in the SE client before opening in utorrent.

Downloading in 300-700kb/s

Be happy it's that high... once you're done downloading and installing, the downloader deletes the patch data.

Unfortunately this means the only true seeds are the SE servers because those are the only things that never delete patch data.

So, in regards to the torrent instructions above. It notes how to start "H2010.08.10.2000" in your torrent client.

Is that the only one that needs to be downloaded? Or just... the biggest pain that can be dont in utorrent or whatever to hopefully save time?

I'm thinking the biggest pain, the other files are small ones, the pain in the *** is something like 3.6Gigz. The others are like 200MB or less I believe. Do the torrenting, btw, it ended up being a lot faster. Only 2 hrs left ( instead of 16 hrs) And remember to seed please, at least on 5-10 kbps.

I think it's just the biggest pain, you still need everything else but they are smaller chunks, I think.
