Leasing a Stand for your Retainer???Follow

Market Ward

Now it's time to put Starbux to use. The entrance to the Market Wards is located near the Southern Islands entrance. Upon arrival, you can select which market ward you wish to enter. Limsa Lominsa has eight individually instanced Market Wards, so make sure you choose wisely.

Once you enter, it's time to setup your retainer. If you truly wish to stand out, you can lease a stand if you are willing to pay out a small rental fee. Now that your retainer is ready to sell, drop the items you would like to sell:

Now you have to set a selling price for each item in the retainer's inventory.

It is never good to have an empty-looking stand, especially one you are paying top gil to rent it. Customize your stand, and you are sure to get your retainer some much-needed attention.

If you are flat broke or simply would rather not rent a stand, don't worry. You can always drop your retainer on the floor at no cost. Saving money is nice, isn't always easy to fight over the crowded floor of the Market Ward.

However you decide to set up your retainer, your work here is done. All you have to do now is come back later and pray your goods have been sold.

Can any beta testers conferm this?? If this is true this makes me want to do a crafting job even more at the start of the game.

I wonder:

1) How many stands are there? Servers could have 5K, 10K, 20K, or more players per server... even if we assume a paltry 3000 players per server and 1000 starting in each city and that only 20% of them buy stalls, that's still 200 stalls. That's a lot of stalls. Is there a limit to total stalls available, or will it be a dynamic area where the zone will be divided into instances, and players can remember that for good ore, they go to Stall 14 in Market Zone B-5.

If there's only one zone and you think of it in terms of Hawker's Alley or Whitegate's stalls, where there only like... 20 stalls for sale, TOTAL, how much do those stalls cost? And once they're all bought, does that mean everyone else is permanently unable to get a stall, ever?

2) How much do these stalls cost? Can you buy stalls of varying sizes at varying prices or is there one standard size? Does it cost something cheap like 1k or 5k or is it prohibitively expensive like 100k per day or such? Or does the game just charge you a tax on your sales, say 10% of sales for your stall? (And if that's the case, I could see prices at stalls being HIGHER to compensate for the tax)

3) Am I reading this to say that not only can you rent a stand, but you can decorate it too? It would be pretty cool if you could put signs on your stall or even lay out fake items on the counter. If I sell skins and ore, it would be cool to have, like, a sign of a skin and a sign of a rock on my stall to catch people's eyes, or maybe even some purely ornamental skins laying around, similar to how the hawkers alley stalls have threads or bottles that are also ornamental.

I still think the game needs a search function, even if you can't buy from it, say something that says:

ITEM----------STARTING PRICE----RETAINER NAME----LOCATION-----
Sheep Leather-100 Gil-----------Fred-------------B-10 Stall 32
Sheep Leather-93 Gil------------Maggie-----------A-14 Floor---
Sheep Leather-100 Gil-----------Jack-------------C-03 Floor---
Sheep Leather-110 Gil-----------Lisa-------------B-12 Stall 12

...and then you can zone in to the section and find the NPC... This is all pure ideology and speculation, of course.

I think all of these ideas are great, so long as they just implement SOME way of searching and browsing for goods, either "swords" or "skins" or "Bronze Spear" or whatever.

Sounds like it could be good.

God I hope they implement a search function. I've been in the market wards and first thing I can say is its creepy as ****, tons of retainers just standing there and blinking, second as its currently implemented, its **** near useless. One has no idea what any retainer is selling without targeting them and selecting browse. From the way SE described them, I was hoping for an actual pseudo marketplace. Npcs(Retainers) in stands trying to attracting possible buyers. Maybe a few npcs that mill about from stand to stand, like they were searching for a purchase. Maybe a few more that just sit around and talk about random things happening in and about the city. Basically a larger more livelier version of hawker's alley. Right now it just seems like a scene out of dead rising, just a mass of bodies standing around.

I totally agree with Oni. If there was a "Good, Bad and Ugly" article about this game, the market ward/retainer system would be in the FUCGLY section.

I have a bad feeling that this is going to kill the game, and I'm not even kidding.

they stated a LONG time ago that they will implement a search feature. i presume they're saving it for release though as i've yet to see it on beta...

I really hope your not yanking our chain.

They also need to label where the entrance to the market ward is on the map. I looked for about 20 minutes before I gave up and shouted for the location. Took another 10 minutes. I am by no means new to MMOs, I really couldn't imagine a newb dealing with this system.

I looked for about 50 minutes already looking for any DOW weapon so I can try out one of the others on my "main"(beta main, lol) and no luck. :/

**** even a new lance would make me happy.

Yeah I didn't know where the heck it was for a good while, but I didn't bother getting a retainer yet either. I don't know which, but I remember an interview where they said there would be a search feature for it. If done right, it sounds like it would be a unique style of AH. Some people have ridiculous prices too...practicing for the real thing I suppose...

The description on the original post does seem very much like what I remember reading previously on this subject so I would be inclined to agree with it. Also, this all looksvery nice and interesting as a side "mini-game" for crafters but with a major flaw.

If the search is implemented then who's gonna care if they have a stall or even if it is decorated? People will just use the search and then move on to find the Retainers so I don't see how it's gonna influence people just looking around.

To prevent market monopoly the way I would implement this would be but having a exponential increase in the cost of the rental so that even the very rich will have to "cancel the lease" sometime and allow new retainers to rent the stalls.

Do I agree with you that a more realistic market would be nicer? Yes but I also remember standing outside Jeuno looking at the Bazars there so whats the difference?

It's similar, but, in FFXI you also had an AH, bazaars were a secondary method, not primary.

Only about 12 retainers/pc's appear at a time, targeting is difficult, you can't just click select bazaar you browse, you have to target them, open another menu, select browse, which is only really annoying since you have to jump around keys on the keyboard, it sounds similar, but its different. Then there's the lag to slow the whole process down.

My suggestion would be, if they really wanted a "market district" theme, would be to have different npcs that all have access to different types of weapons, and when you set your retainer to sell a certain weapon/item, they give it to the appropriate vendor. Kinda like Amazon.com, but multiple, all specialized.

So one npc would have all the Gladiators swords and shields, one would have the lances and javelins, one would have armorer made armor, one would have cloth based gear. Like crossing the AH system, with the npc vendors.

The HA might not be in place for the first few months but from what I've read so far I'm lead to believe it will be implemented some time in the future.
