Unfortunate for all those just getting keys, just got a tweet that Phase 3 shuts down in two days (Wed, Aug. 25th) and the next phase is Open Beta in early September. One has to wonder if SE's moving a bit too quick to get this game out of Beta and to live. Smiley: disappointed

How fortuitous. My brother's ex-boss' wife had a dream telling her the world would end on the 26th.

Right, because they haven't made any changes since starting Beta.

Whats @#%^ing wrong with SE?
First start the whole Beta Key Give Away...actually "pretend" that they care for their customers...then this happens...sorry Beta Key Give Away was delayed due to various circumstances...and now, as they got handed out more or less. "Sorry dear pranked FFXIV Fan...Beta is ending in 2 days, get ready for Open Beta, which anyone can join and will start in 2 weeks"

As I still look forward to FFXIV and I will definetily play it...I get more and more angry how @#%^ing stupid SE handles these things...why do they pretend as if they would care for the "Feedback"...in the end it seems, all changes that did happen, were planned in the first place, and implementing those changes during beta phases was just "a pat on the back" to let the community think, they actually "achieved" something with their feedback, ignoring the fact that the things almost ALL gave feedback for and wanted to get changed, never changed...

I won't play FFXIV until PS3 Release...but non the less its ridiculous SE still didn't manage to get the mouse thing working...and in the latest interviews they actually admit themselves, that the japanese don't care for the mouse, only the rest of the world does...hence its "not important enough" to get fixed before retail...

For some strange reason I got the impression, SE was pretty good at learning nothing by 8 years of FFXI xD
I still am excited for FFXIV...but I just don't get why they started all the ruckus about "feedback and community blah blah", if in the end SE doesn't give a sh*t xD Former FFXI players who liked/loved FFXI, will play FFXIV anyways...and as things are looking now, they don't need to think about casual gamers for more than 2 weeks...because thats when all of them canceled the subscription anyway xD

Yeah I don't think so. Why would they be taking applications for the Open Beta if anyone can join (note: applications are not up yet, visit the beta application site, you'll see what I'm talking about)?

So if you got a beta key, you're in for the Open Beta, which is a bonus. What I expect to happen is we will see a bunch of tweaks and enhancements during the lull between beta 3 and the open beta. Hopefully all of the little grips and glitches that have been annoying the **** out of everyone here will be fixed and we will end up with a more polished game, something close to it's final form.

Either SE is using the term "open beta" not for what it stands, or you just don't know what open beta actually means. Open Beta means, open to public, open to anyone who is willing to join and try it. Thats what open beta actually stands for. If there is an application needed and not anyone whos willing is able to join, then its no OPEN beta...its still a closed beta...during open beta you usually just need to register to the site, download the client login with your registered account and its ready to start.
Thats how open beta works, and thats how every MMO released in the past handled open betas...if SE is the first to do it another way, then they shouldn't call it open beta, because then it is none.

"Application" could simply mean "fill out this form and we'll give you access", doesn't necessarily mean they won't be letting everyone in.

Kinda sucks, though I've been able to play FFXIV for a week or so now (got key second day of fileplanet giveaway), my graphics card for my new PC doesn't get here till this evening. Doesn't leave much time to test it out on the new rig ; ;

I have never been in an open beta that was truly open. They said about a month ago that there would be an application process for the open beta.

Of couse "truly" open is not what I meant with this, but they usually let in a ton of people for open beta testing w/o any application form or w/e, just registering an account and downloading the client is usually enough to join open betas.
If there would be, lets say, like 300.000 people wanting to join open beta, then of course they would "stop" giving out permissions to join open beta at some point...but until then, usually everyone gets access.

No, you are making assumptions. The type of beta you describe to me would be a "public beta" and not an open beta. To me at least, open implies possibly a full lift of the NDA. Since you refuse to visit the site to see for yourself, allow me to quote:
Quote:
We will also be starting the application period for the upcoming open beta on WindowsR in the near future.

Regardless of what you want it to mean, it's clear to me that not everyone will be allowed in, at least at first. You will need to apply, and I assume there will be a code emailed to the applicant after approval, since the game requires a Square Enix account. To be sure you can bet those already in the beta will be in the game before the new applicants.

Now, pull that giant pointy stick out of your **** and enjoy the last few days of beta 3 Smiley: grin

Open beta basically means "public beta" :p
Open in this term stands for "open to anyone whos willing", while closed stands for a "selected few who are approved to join."
I did read the application thing on the SE site^^ But if it really is based on an application with further approval afterwards, it is no open beta :)

I for myself don't really care what it is in the end xD I just don't get why SE is doing all that stuff, when there is no point in it at the end of the day xD

Either way, I'm glad to have had the few days I've had. I feel like I have a leg up when the game launches, especially with the fishing aspect of it. I'm also hopeful that the Open Beta will include all 3 cities now. I remember that's how XI's beta was, you were basically testing the game plus the Zilart expansions. In fact, people who got to level 30+ got to stay a few extra weeks after the public beta was closed.

Another thing I hope they do; when the public beta ended in XI, they had giant toads attack the cities and everyone from level 1 (in their undies) to level 50 were out there banging away on the Gigantoads. It was great fun, and an appropriate way to end the beta Smiley: thumbsup

Well that sucks... But at least I got to try out the game on my system before the game goes live. Suppose I'll take the time then to look over all the character creation stuff and find a look I really like for my characters to simplify the creation process when my CE copy comes in.

Maybe the beta key giveaway wasn't to let a whole bunch of people experience the game as they have it so far but maybe to test out the download servers and the steps necessary to start a character when thousands of people are doing so at the same time in order to make adjustments for Open Beta? I seem to recall that the beta key giveaway winners couldn't get onto the beta forums, which just screams "We're testing equipment and the opening steps to see exactly where we should change things to make it faster and stand up to an on-slaught."

Yeah, i really think all the keys that were just given out were for open beta anyway. Which everyone should be happy about since the OB phase will have much more content in it. Also, they may have fixed a few more things. I can't wait to see myself.

Wish list for Open Beta

  • A way to reply to tells
  • Fix interface lag
  • More / commands and macro enablers such as <pt1>
  • A way to remap keyboard controls
  • A way to save equipped abilities when you switch jobs
  • A better list of chat filters

My wish list.

* For the controls to be more like FFXI. This mostly applies to the mouse usage and the way the cursor would automatically jump to just opened menus. (Depending on how I'm sitting determines whether I use the mouse or not)
* To have the UI layout to save when I log out/in.
* For base stats to at least seem like they do something. Maybe It's just me, but even a 60 point difference in strength has no effect whatsoever on my melee damage.
* An overhaul or major adjustment to the Market Ward/Retainer system.
* DEATH TO ALL MI'QOTES!
* More labels on the maps. It took me 30 minutes to find the Market Ward, only because someone told me where it was.

* A way to reply to tells
* Fix interface lag
* More / commands and macro enablers such as <pt1>
* A way to save equipped abilities when you switch jobs

Aside from UI interface (mainly mouse response) and pathing problems with mobs. The game looks pretty good as it stands. I'm sure there are more bugs and problems in the game. A month before early start begins, we should all be happy!

I've been in open beta before and still needed a key code to get in. I think "Open Beta" doesnt mean it's open to everyone, but open to alot more players and the keys are easier to obtain.

Even if phase 3 is ending, and that I may not be able to play in Open Beta, I'm glad that I got the chance to play and learn a little about how the game works.

My issues so far roughly in order from biggest to smallest:

Interface lag - Especially when dealing with shops or God forbid, the market ward
Camera controls - Arrow keys please.. or a non-sucky mouse.. I'm not picky
MP Regen - I need some
UI interaction - Some elements of the UI can only be interacted with in very very specific ways, this needs to be generalized across control schemes
Guildleves auto-failing on disconnect
Being unable to restore MP at Aetheryte during a guildleve (makes dying in one really punishing)
Stat points - They need to do things, they really don't seem to right now
Stat point reallocation - If I do it in town, I should get them all back at once
Ability slot bindings - Should save their state based on class
Mob placement - Too many murderous death sheep, not enough mobs for actual grinding
Skill point awards - Needs to be normalized across group members who participated in combat, right now it just goes to whoever mashed 1 the fastest and doesn't reward support activities like healing or debuffing
Surplus EXP - Needs to be explained better and probably scaled back slightly from its current form (if not eliminated entirely but I'm not getting into that again)

Interface Lag and UI Interaction - This is being fixed because it's serverside and they said they know what's causing it to run at molasses speed.

Guildleves - On my wishlist too.

Being unable to restore MP at an Aetheryte dring guildleve - This was a counter measure.

Stat Point Allocation - Getting a fraction is fine, why have separate classes and balance if you can max things out on a high level class, switch to a rank 1 and be overpowering compared to a new rank 1? Gotta have balance. Even FFXI had balance with a person who's maxed out on merits switching to level 1 and going from there.

Mob Placement - This is a typical beta practice to throw everything into the space players are testing at..this is something I know for sure will change :D

Rewards - This is balance, in beta there's no balance..this is a standard for all of SE games (XI comes to mind unless you have a HUGE level gap)

Surplus - This just needs balancing is all which they already said balancing is happening.

Also nah SE isn't moving too fast, FFXIV been in the works since 2005, realistically 2007 on physical production the phases seem quick because they're supposed to be quick till open beta then release. Alpha phase lasted way too long so I think it threw them off now they're trying to get through the phases as quick as possible Smiley: nod

For the interface lag don't forget that the the command will appear in the dialog box before it shows up in the action screen. You can set the ability see that it was set in the dialog box and goto the next ability before the UI updates. It does save a little time.

I'm hoping it will be an all-out open beta, because I was pretty bummed when I didn't win any of the contests. That, and seeing some of SE's attitudes about how the outside of Japan market isn't essential brings back bad memories.

Though a lot of western dev studios completely overlook Japan altogether, so it works on both ends of the ocean, I think SE is just the most vocal of em all.

Yeah I tried to leave off things they've already said they're fixing, but some of those like the interface lag were just too glaring to omit.

Being unable to restore your MP after dying in a guildleve is a counter-measure to what exactly? Successful completion?

Balance issues I can deal with, as long as they're actually addressed I don't have a problem.

Also after having said all that I came up with another thing that a friend and I were having an issue with last night, what passes for the check system needs some very serious work. Things that check blue to me should not be able to one-shot me, I've been down this road before with easy prey mobs ripping my tongue out and handing it back to me.. If something checks blue (easy prey) it should be.... easy prey.

Iirc, in Phase 2 (and earlier) you could just camp the aetheryte and fully restore yourself during a leve and it was also used to boost magic classes very very quickly which I'd have to guess threw off the data SE wanted to collect on leveling practices since they seem to want MP management to be something players experience which people found a way to bypass that lol.

Fair enough, as it stands though not only is grinding a magic class very difficult compared to a melee class, but like I said... dying during a guildleve is almost certain failure if your MP is low because there's no way to get it back (let's assume your half-hour cooldown MP restore skill is down... because it probably is)

I hope they fix the controls. If I was to say I "hated" anything in 14 so far its the control scheme. I hope they give you the option to set it up like 11 because it was perfect for me. So much so, every game I have played since I "retired" I have mimicked the control set up to match 11 best I could. So yeah, if anything change the controls or give us a lot of ability to change them as we see fit. The way they are right now has caused a dozen aneurysms to form and burst several times a day.

Its not cool.

Also a lot more explaining of "things" in general would be nice. I'm not too bothered about this phase ending. I've had a decent run with it and for those who just started, remember the game is a month away. Not much a consolation, but at least its some.

I'd better get some more crafting practice in tonight before I have to reroll! Work duties on Tues and Wed.

I am sorry, but I am unclear in all the confusion.

When open starts are us still in beta able to play? Or do we have to hope we get picked yet again?
(No I am not refering to rerolling, I mean will I still be able to log in and play)

Every other beta I've been a part of: once you're in, you're in until it's all over

Now this is SE, so re-applying to the beta may be part of the fun

Yep, selected testers get opted in to next phases automatically.

See its those wishlists that are the reason for beta's and open beta's. SE may favor JP players but I remember seeing an interview where NA players were putting 5 times as much input into the game. So I would assume that even if SE only listens to 1/5th of those inputs the game should still be developed evenly for both sides of the ocean.

And MMO's change so much in the first couple of months, I plan on giving it a couple of months to mature before going off on "I hate SE" rants.

What do we know so far about the Open Beta?

- Starts early September?
- Open to the public?
- All character and item info will be deleted at the end?
- You get to keep your character's name?

I thought we knew more than just this, but it seems there has been no Official statement about it.
Could anyone help fill in the blanks?

- Starts early sepetember, no doubt conceding with the FFXI Version Update.
- Depends on what Squares definition of 'Open Beta' is.
- Everything is deleted end of P3 and end of OB, with our names from XI being retained as well as possibility of our OB name being retained.
- See ^.
- All 3 city-states will be available.
- More guildleves and etc.
- Apparently there will be some more quests in..

That's all I remember off hand.

My input on all of this:

-I'm glad I got 5 days of play time from my key before Open Beta. No reason to complain about play time any measure of time away from the release.
-I believe that the Beta Key Giveaway was intended to stress test the servers a little more before the really big stress test of the open beta, that's why you couldn't report bugs or post on beta forums.
-The Beta Key Giveaway keys were intended to go out earlier, but they didn't change the downtime before Open Beta because this would in turn delay Open Beta which would then delay release.
-For those of you concerned about not getting an Open Beta Key if in fact handing those out through the applications is how it is handled, please take into consideration that you will have only a month left or less till release which is probably much less time than most of you have waited for the game. So don't be too distraught. =)
-My guess if they aren't giving out keys is that the applications will allow anyone to register either up to a certain number of applicants, or until a certain date, then no more after that.

Either SE is using the term "open beta" not for what it stands, or you just don't know what open beta actually means.

Ease up, champ. Open beta can obviously mean a lot of things to a lot of people. It doesn't really matter what Wint thinks it means because what he's saying is factually correct. S-E is requiring apps for Open Beta, and it wouldn't make much sense to do that unless they intended to restrict the number of people getting in. What "open beta" means to S-E isn't exactly clear, so maybe wait and see what happens before you cry about the beta key that you didn't really "earn" in the first place.

By joining beta, you're actually joining the CIA.
