With the ever upcoming interest in how macro's work, i decided that it needs it's own thread. The info is kind of spread out.

So this will be a walkthrough on how to set up a macro.

Step 1.
Bring up your menu screen and choose the Configuration tab. Cycle down to the bottom tab labled Macros, and click it.
This opens up a menu that allows you to 1/100 macro slots available. 50 for CTRL, and 50 for Alt. You can also choose an icon to represent the macro you are creating. nice touch.
Here you can also name your new macro. Since my only macro experience is with marauder, i will use that as the basis for this walkthrough.

Step 2.
After you have picked your new macro slot, and named it, we can begin our macro lines. Please note that each macro has a 10 line limit.
So i want to make a macro that allows me to change to marauder on the fly, with my desired skill set. lets's start.
/equip main "Weathered War Axe"
/equip throwing "Bronze Francisca"
/eaction 2 Cure
/eaction 3 Bloodbath
/eaction 4 Throw
/eaction 5 "Skull Sunder"
/eaction 6 Trunksplitter
/eaction 7 "Broad Swing"
/eaction 8 Haymaker
/eaction 9 Defender

So now we have a full macro. Now to explain a few things.
There is no need to enter a macro line for slot 1. Every time you change your weapon, the default ability is automatically slotted to slot 1 (in this case Light Swing).
The commands so far are pretty easy to understand.
/equip (slot) will equip armor/weapns/accessories
/eaction (#) will slot an ability (or action as they are called) into the desired numbered slot.

One command not used in this example is the "/action" command. This allows you to execute actions via a macro line.
For example:
/action Cure <me> will automatically fire off the cure spell on myself.

There are still some commands i may not know yet, so feel free to add what you have learned.

When you equip a ranged or throwing weapon the Throw (or Shoot or Whatever) skill is automatically inserted into your action bar in whatever the next available slot is... so if you want Throw in slot 4, equip your throwing weapon after filling slot 3

Threads like this tend to find their way into larger compilation threads which then become stickies... it sorts itself out

great! I was wondering how to do the cure macro. And this job change macro will make switching classes infinitely better.

Just a matter of where you want it on the actionbar, since my hands are all over the place on the keyboard anyway playing this game it doesn't really matter to me where something ends up being, as long as I know where it is

Sadly, a lot of FFXI commands don't work as of right now. I'm willing to bet that more commands will be released later though.

In fact most games limit the size of your macros, because usually being able to do a whole bunch of things with the push of a single button is bad (from a design standpoint)

I was playing about with the macro's while on the last beta and found that you could not use the following:

/p [Gather Together]--> Protect and Shell
/wait 1
/action "Protect" main
/wait 7
/action "Shell" main

So the wait command and the say/shout/party chat command cant be used in the macros. Hope they change this in beta because they would be very useful for organising Regimens and general party dynamics.

Also because of a lot of lag was affecting the UI in Beta (hope this is not eh case in O Beta or retail!) - often the macro's I used in sequence, i.e. 2, 3, 4, 5 etc were sometimes not being set. So what I did was set action out of sequence, i.e. 2, 11, 3, 12, 4, 13 etc. I found this helped a lot and most of the time I wuold get all my action and equipment in place quickly when needed.

Believe me anyone that has not tested or played yet - you will need a lot of macro's for this game! If you thought FFXI was dependant on them to be efficient try FFXIV - tahnkfully they appear to have given us enough though.

I've learned that <sign#>~ are for ally signs, which for some strange reason will always say it in general chat which could become annoying.

I'm having issues getting all the accessory macros to work. When i typed /? equip, the list of slots were:

/equip thrown
/equip head
/equip neck
/equip l.ear

/equip hands
/equip l.index
/equip r.index
/equip l.ring
/equip r.ring

/equip legs
/equip feet

(this macro makes you naked btw..)

ANYWAY, my question is: i can't make any of the Left or Right accesory macros work! i've tried "L.Ear" "l.ear" "Left Ear" but nothing is working. anyone else have this problem? Any Suggestions?

also an absolute lifesaver for us conj/thau who like to throw some nukes in with our cures is

/aoe on
/aoe off

How i implement these would be

Alt1
/aoe on
/ac "Cure" <t> or <me>

ctrl 1
/aoe off
/ac "Thunder" <t>

these effectivly switch your AOE mode on and off so you dont get 2 shoted by the billygoats that are currently following you and your whole PT around when you nuke.

If anybody has a nice targeting macro similar to "<bt>" in XI that autotargeted your partys red target that would be a nice addition to this list :)

I'm always worried I'll ***** that one up, and actually have a few times, but luckily the "other" mobs were apparently just out of range. I've got it down pretty well now to easily turn aoe on/off before casting using the controller. Some backup macros might be a good idea though...

And yeah, I'd love some good targeting macros...didn't play much with that in beta

I believe normal members can search the threads now. I think it just happened (within a couple weeks). Also Anyone really know the purpose of the macros? I mean hitting the buttons on the bottom seems like a macro in itself. Also you can't change gear during battles and so on so forth. So really I just do it manually as I'm walking 4 hours from one city to the next. Am I missing something?

We'll have to wait and see. In FFXI macros were popular for having certain gear equipped while casting certain spells or performing specific actions. Macros are just a lot more convenient, especially for classes that might have a large number of actions to perform. I suspect the mage classes or any combination of them will make heavy use of macros, organized in a way that they can quickly use a spell or ability they need.

Also, at the moment when you are a Conjurer lets say, and you quickly switch over to a Weaver...when you switch back to Conjurer you'll need to re-equip all of your spells and abilities which is quite annoying. You can create a macro that will do all of this for you with the push of a button. I do think I read something though from SE that they're going to address this, so it might not be an issue for too long.

Lodestone is a lode-of-crap. They have their equipment text commands wrong! for example: off hand=sub, NOT off. Throwing item=throwing not thrown. You'd think the "official" site designers might actually have the right info, but NOOOO.

I'm having a problem with a macro and I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I tried to create a macro to use the gladiator ability "Circle Slash"

I tried all of these variants:

/ac "Circle Slash" <t>
/ac "Circle Slash" <st>
/ac "Circle Slash" <me>

In each case, my circle slash ability would indeed go off, but it would not hit any of the mobs around my character, instead it would hit ME.

Is this a bug? Or am I doing it wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help given.

I actually had this question and a poster helped me figure it out. First thing, like someone already said, lodestone is a bunch of crap. It is wrong for a few things and l.ear, l.ring, etc in particular.

use this macro for multiple worded slots...

/equip "Left Ear" "earring name"
/equip "Right Ear" "earring name"
/equip "Right Index Finger"
etc.

Also, it should be noted that (at least for now, probably something they will change I would think) when you are equipping a +1,2,3 item leave off the +1,2,3. Took me a bit to figure that out. So for instance...

/equip "Right Index Finger" "Bone Ring" << this would equip a bone ring +1 to your right index finger if you had a +1 in your inventory.

I hope this helps. There has been a lot of confusion on this and the OP should be edited to include this very important detail.

edit: added the +1,2,3 stuff

Gah, I feel like an idiot. ><

I'm trying to set my Conj gear macro, and have encountered one issue. Maybe there is an obvious issue here I'm just not seeing?

/equip Main Hand "Ash Cane"

I've tried main alone, Ash Cane +1, quotations around "Main Hand"...nothing works. Plus when I first started, I just had the equip command for everything, no gear names..so everything unequipped. Except the cane.

And now I can't even manually unequip the cane. It just tells me it's unable to unequip the Ash Cane +1.

Help?
