So word on the street is that Beta Phase 3 ends on Wednesday, August 25th and the next step will be the open Beta in early September.

Did SE really just make the Fan Sites give out who knows how many keys by hand for the people that won to get less than a week of Beta time? Never mind the people that got ripped off by FilePlanet. Seems like really poor planning or a real **** move on SEs part.

You're still going to need a key for "open" beta, so what exactly is the problem?

In my opinion it doesn't matter. It's a beta test not an early demo of the game. There's not even a whole lot to do anyway. You could probably test out pretty much everything within a day.

I think they wanted to do a server stress test for the most part.

Because when it comes to open Beta all you'll have to do is sign up and you're in anyway. Unless SE has a different description of "Open Beta". The amount of work involved in handing out the amount of keys they gave out hardly seems worth it for a couple days of testing time.

Oh man a real **** move on something that most people got for free? If people paid for this at fileplanet, then I'm sorry they can't control their money and emotions better.

Not to mention what Karl said. You will most likely get to use your key for the upcoming open beta.

The ONLY bad thing this shows is the time and effort the good people at ZAM and other sites 'wasted.'

But even so, in the end SE got promotion, ZAM got an influx of new visitors and people are enjoying the beta as we speak.

Uh...

Edit: changed speaking in general terms not directed at the OP

I'm not entirely sure about this but before people who don't have keys get overly excited about open beta I don't believe it's as open as you really think. You still have a chance of not getting into it I believe, so those who currently have keys should not be complaining that they're being cheated on.

Open beta does not necessarily mean "hey everyone come play the game".

Open Beta is supposed to be the beta phase with no NDA, recently mmos have turned open beta's into public betas but that doesnt mean SE has to follow in their footsteps

You're making assumptions that don't even necessarily make a lot of sense. It's possible they'll let any one in, but it's also possible they won't. They are, after all, requiring an application for open beta, so open beta might not mean to S-E what it means to other people.

If Pikko or Vlorsutes want to cry, then they are welcome to cry on my shoulder, because they went through a lot of trouble to get beta keys out to people quickly. Any one else though really wasn't inconvenienced any more than they chose to be inconvenienced.

Open Beta circa. 1990s:
"Hey, Type in www.mmorpgname.com/org/net/kr/cn/co.jp/ and sign up for an account and download the the 1gb client and enter account information and play!"

Open Beta circa. 2010:
"Fill out an app, if you get selected you'll get a link to (location) with account setup and client download. Oh, and you're also more than welcome to flood youtubes with videos as it will generate hype."

Times have changed.

Also the key is basically registering the product itself to you so the keys are still very useful, closed beta is just tighter random selection and NDA and as said, Open Betas tend to be "no NDA" period doesn't always mean again as said it's open to everyone because there's many definitions to what an open beta is..especially these days when there's many definitions to what a beta is it seems.

Fortunately SE doesn't care about people testing things at this stage... if they did, they'd let you give feedback

Do you expect to download a new client for Open Beta? Overwrite? Or just a version update to what you have?

What about the disk install at release? Overwrite the Beta clients? Or just need the activation key for another version update?

I'm not really sure what client really means - please be gentle. Someone that has been in the previous Beta phases would know how this works. Or someone that has participated in another game's Beta. How did that translate to the release version, install-wise?

Even if this game did let you download a patch to update from beta it would not be worth it since the patch would be like 10GB and you could install the CD in like 10 mins

What I'd love is if they allow the current FFXIV beta accounts just upgrade to the retail client once it comes out. Save those who bought the CE from having to install the game then sit through all (if any are applied after the game had went to print.) the updates for it. Also anyone have an idea yet what "early September" is gonna mean? By early are they referring that it's gonna be like a week or two before release date or more? And when would OB end? I doubt they'd extend it to September 21st so it'll likely be up to a week before release they pull the plug and make any final adjustments.

They mentioned in a recent interview that they'd like to have 2-3 weeks of open beta...if they do then it should be the 1st week of september, depending on when they plan to end it...

Famitsu interview.
Quote:
Open beta is planned to start the beginning of September.
Complaints from beta testers about the mouse control mainly came from players outside of Japan. Japanese gamers don’t really use a mouse, which is why it hasn’t received a lot of SE’s attention.
They are working to improve party play and give players more of a reason to group with others.
Open beta will grant players access to the other 2 starting cities. Ul’dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa should be playable in the open beta.
They plan to add more classes in future version updates and expansion. We may see another magic class in an early major version update.

I still think it's just all the remaining applicants for the Beta, period. I'm sure if anyone had a priority to get in, it's those who've been waiting patiently to test the game, but have yet been chosen. I could be wrong.

while I'm glad I did get in Phase 3, I'm also kinda miffed that I didn't even get a full week to enjoy it. I worked, and had a ton of social engagements this weekend. Guess I'll have to spend all my free time these next 2 days getting in some action.

Yea I totally plan on starting at Gridania as well. I'm probably gonna skip Gridania in Open Beta so I can have that sense of "surprise!" when I load it up on Sept. 23rd. (I know it's released on the 22nd but... well... you know lol)

I got in the beta last Friday(didn't play till Saturday), so I'm happy with the time I've had so far. Well worth involving myself in the contests.

Also I like these forums a lot and I would have never ended up here if not for the contest.

That is a good idea - I think I will start in Ul'Dah that way I'll have a sense of all three major cities right from the get go
