Ok so we know that there are issues with Microsofts XBL closed environment and XIV being released on it, this thread isn't so much about that but DirectX.

I've read before about DirectX 10+ (10, 10.1, 11) not being compatible with the 360, I think it was on 1up so take it for what you will.

Anyway what I'm getting at is the possible reason the XIV doesn't currently support 10 or 11 is because they coded the PC version not as the PC version but as a 360 version.

I know, conspiracy theory.

But what I'm thinking is that eventually SE will move on past that and move to a PC only development (assuming they can't work thinks out with Microsoft, if they don't it's a bad thing for all of us since saturation is key) and eventually add at least DX10 features. These would lessen the load on GPUs as they could get similar effects with less stress, and then if they could get DX11 in there... I forgot where I was going with this, but I'm pretty sure that each upgrade of DX has an increase in physics and graphic quality for less system costs... ok depends on your card and tesselation definately hurts alot of cards...

anyway, thoughts?

At the very least perhaps SE just coded the game to work on as many systems as possible. Those being the PS3 and Xbox 360 (and obviously PC)

I think it was very wise of SE to develop the game on the PC first. I can see the game in a few years maturing and perhaps (if it does well) even being placed on a PS4 (equivalent) or future Xbox 720? lol.

I think you're on to something and that SE Ninja Team Chrysanthamum will be paying you and your excitable little dog a "visit" soon...

Hmm, I hope they didn't do that. PS2 limitations were bad enough for XI, having xbox360 limitations set upon XIV even though it isn't even on 360 isn't something I would care for. >.<

I don't think they will gimp any of the systems this time around, I'm pretty sure they learned their lesson.

Anyway I was just hoping that the reason it's in DX9 right now and not 10 or 11 was because they'd co-coded the initial release for the 360 and PC. What I'm hoping is they'll do something like EVE did initially with the spearate client downloads that supported multiple versions of Direct X, but I highly doubt that will ever happen.

Not going to happen. Girlfriend pets become yours by transference. When my ex moved out her stupid cat had "run away". 2 weeks later the fat ******* came back and I ended up with a useless cat. I would say I was just "lucky" but it has happened to every guy I have ever met who was in that situation.

FFXIV uses SE's proprietary (and now abandoned) Crystal Tools engine, which targets PS3, 360, and PC, and only supports DirectX 9 - largely because it's been in development for over 5 years and because SE, like most Japanese developers, has fallen behind on the programming curve.

In order to support DirectX 10 or 11, they'd have to spend more development time on the Crystal Tools engine, which is not going to happen because, as I mentioned, they're abandoning it in favor of Unreal Engine 3 (which targets the same platforms AND supports DirectX 10).

And they're not going to recode the client to use the Unreal engine anytime soon, because that is too much effort and time for not enough payoff. (Switching a game to a new engine is incredibly time-consuming - it's one of the main reasons why Duke Nukem Forever was in development for over a decade and never shipped.)

I thought they gave up Unreal 3 in favor for Crystal Tools.

They experimented with The Last Remnant using unreal 3 and that was that. Moved onto the Crystal Tools Suite.
