Hiya.
I'm trying to decide between an ATI or Nvidia graphics card. Would prefer ATI, but fancy going 3D (cheaper than a 3D tv)
Anyone know if the rumoured ATI 3D is going ahead and if it will be backwards compatible like the Nvidia system and play FFXIV?
Cheers.

ATI's 3D solution depends on middleware supplied by the 3D glasses vendor and direct support in the application. It is not "automatic" like Nvidias.

The novelty of 3D glasses wears off fast. You're probably better off building a surround gaming rig instead. The cost and graphics card requirements are about the same, it won't cause eyestrain, and you won't have to look at the game through a pair of dark glasses for hours.

Here's a video of what FFXIV looks like on 3 monitors.

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I have to admit I've been very disappointed with panoramic setups. Some people swear by them, but for me they don't add a whole lot to my gaming experience.

3D on the other hand definitely does add to my experience. I also don't find the nVidia's 3d glasses to be "novel" and have not suffered eye fatigue or strain. To each their own I guess, but I would add to the original poster to try out some different setups to see what gives you the best game experience.

Thanks for that.
3 monitors doesn't appeal to me. Would be fun to play for a while in 3D and watch films. Bought new TV recently, but managed to stop myself spending a fortune being an early adopter of 3D. Wondered if doing it on PC would be a cheap way in.

I don't think I'll be into the 3D thing until they can find a way to do it without glasses. DON'T TELL ME IT'S NOT POSSIBLE!

they can do it right now, and information I've read about the method suggests it to be actually beneficial for your eyes, but it would require a different monitor design to be effective, do a search for stereoscopic images in google and practice a little at viewing them (whatever method best works for you for Magic Eye images seems to be most effective)

It's possible but instead of wearing glasses you have to look at the monitor from directly in front.

I think what you want is a holographic display, but that's still years away.

The best compromise right now are passive 3D monitors that use polarized glasses instead of shutter glasses.

I don't rust Toshiba's track record with new display technologies. They have a tendency to promise big things, show impressive working prototypes and then not be able to bring it to market.

Remember SED?

Would have been a viable competitor for Plasma if someone who could actually bring it to market had it instead of Toshiba.

SE is working with nvidia to get 3d support so ATI is not the choice.
