So I am leveling Conj, well not really, I stopped leveling for beta, but im playing with setting pushing my computers limits. But i fought a sewer mole, he attacked me, hit for 0 because of my stone skin, and then I countered for 12 points....

I never played a melee class yet. Anyone care to explain?

Did you have Punishing Barbs on? Because they do that.

Can't remember if Shock Spikes does damage when it goes off... if not, I'd say you're just some kind of weird magical monk and roll with it

Could it be that the shock spikes come up as Counter?

So, is there any class now that counts as a healer or is it basically everyone's job to heal themselves? Or what?

Conjurer and Thaumaturge are able to heal others (when it works) but no class really feels like a "healer" as in, that's their job.

I think all the melee classes have some capacity to heal themselves as well

I think if you wanted to you can definitely build a healer class but the game encourages you to attack the mob as well - it doesn't have to be through nuking though but simply using the scepter or Staff or what have you...you get some weapon skills that regenerate MP. But to start off there is no "healer" in the WHM sense of FFXI, but its possible to make one.

I'm noticing that it seems desciples of the hand don't seem so good a starting class, so I might try to make a healer first then do culinary as a side.

I was really annoyed during the opening sequence with my fisher character. Only being able to throw rocks & have the roegadyn save my *** was weak lol

Except watching him hit for 2k+ damage was kinda sweet. One shot Roegadyn!

Indeed that did kinda make up for it, and you get the cool fishing hat free if you start as one...

Honestly I had a pretty miserable experience leveling Con until I got both Stoneskin & Shock Spikes (which is where the countering comes from). With both these spells up your ability to tackle tough mobs increases dramatically.

For most of the early levels I felt like Pugs were running circles around me...

Indeed. I just grouped up for the early levels but later on with Stoneskin and Spikes up CNJ is a solo monstrosity (atleast until you're out of mp). I was killing Puks and Dodos solo around level 9-11 around Skull Valley, something most other classes can't accomplish and its good xp to boot. I also do that with my Thaumaturge now but i borrow CNJ skills to do it.

Just finished up the Rank 20~ Camp Bloodshore Guildleves as a level 10 Conjurer using Stoneskin/Shock Spikes:

Might have been a little low to attempt To Catch a Thief, Conjury Skill +616:

2301 Experience Points after clearing one of the rebel parties, and I even found the Gil chest:

Cleared the Zikko placeholders without taking any damage:

Imp in Sheep's Clothing was a blast, cleared about 1k Conjury Skill and just under 3k Physical Exp:

Every time I read about there being no dedicated healing class I wanna cry... I loved being a WHM. Granted, I don't plan to start as one, but I still intended for that to be my main.

(...and yes, I do realize that this shows my lack of knowledge about the classes, but hey, I spent the last 4 days trying to get my limping, lame, low-end PC to download and play the beta)

I think this just means you can use a combination of classes to make your own unique dedicated healer. :)
