A project of mine still in the works as well as my first computer build.

DP45SG Extreme Motherboard
2xPCI-E 2.0 Crossfire
Core 2 Duo 2.93GHz E7500
2x1Gig OEM DDR3 1333
51+500GB HDD
Geforce GT220 2.0(Sparkle)
Windows 7 64bit
HP 20" HD LCD/1600-900res/Integrated Speakers

Low scores averages 1350-1400 on the benchmark. Most likely before or a couple weeks after the retail release I will upgrade to a ATI HD 5770(maybe Dual), and in a week or 2 from now, I will add an additional 2x2Gig sticks for a total of 6Gigs so I can better utilize the 64bit OS.

I wasn't planning on asking any questions, but while I'm at it, might as well do so before I spend more money. As I mentioned above, I plan to upgrade to an ATI 5770, but the problem is that I'm seeing many different brands of the 5770. so I'm having a difficult time deciding what card brand will give me a better bang for my buck.

Dude, if he does anything on that desk he's screwed. Why not just spend the $50 on a case? Save you a lot of trouble in the future, I'm sure you'll regret doing this at some point.

I've got an XFX and have heard a lot good about it but it is also worth reading reviews on sites to see if any of the gripes concern you. At least you won't have to worry about whether the card will fit in your case, lol

I plan to add more to the platform to better protect it down the road. I just enjoy doing little projects like this, regardless of what others think of it =) It's just how I am.

And it's as Olorinus said, I would like to see others opinions through experience of these different brands before I empty my wallet ^_^

XFX use to make Nvidia cards at the highest quality. They had a tissy fit with Nvidia over GF100's heat and performance(GTX 470/480s) so they haven't even touched a FERMI-based card, not even the 460(sadly). In the mean time they ramped up their ATI line for the first time and have been making great 5xxx series radeon cards.

If you don't get an XFX, I'd suggest Asus directCU, gigabyte, MSI, or EVGA. Everyone has a horror story for every brand, so don't listen to them unless you are willing to look at stories fairly for all the above brands. But these should do you good justice.

This is true. I have an MSI Hawk which I love and has run like a top. My friend bought the same card and has had to RMA it 3 times. Luck of the draw...that or MSI really doesn't like him.

I think the GTX 460 is the new sweet spot. They came out 2 weeks after I got my 5770 and I was sort of ticked about it. My friends is benchmarking over 30% faster then my 5770 on the same build.

You'll spend 25% more and get more than 25% gain. It doesn't hurt that ffxiv seems to be optimized for nVidia at the moment.

^ Yeah Skinwalker. Mine has been giving me all kinds of trouble and will probably be RMAing it within the next month or so. Can't expect to get a computer part 100% working order all the time when you're building. Least if you buy systems from Dell etc they do the stress testing etc with them. And if a card messes up they most likely have a couple sitting around to replace it with.

Regardless, what happened to your friends card? Was the ati display driver crashing? Not work on boot up? I was using Windows 7 64 bit and it was doing it a lot so I switched to XP 32 bit. It barely does it anymore. I have a feeling it has to do with the powersave feature on ATI cards. When switching from video to 3d to video to 2d mode etc. Only solution I've found that works is MSI afterburner and forcing it into video mode permanently.

Or... you can just BIOS mod the 2d mode. Might do that next. Bump the 2d mode that is 157MHz/300MHz up to 200/400MHz and see if that makes a difference on the crashes. Still, MSI is great. 3 year warranty on their cards I believe.
#28 Aug 25 2010 at 9:49 PM Rating: Good
My new system is a similar set of 'potential to upgrade'. 4gb ram though (DDR3) but the video card is currently a very budget (was even a return to the store(but unopened), so 20% off) 5670. Still a ~2500 benchmark score, so it's not like I'm going to be stuck if I don't upgrade right away when it comes out.

Mine is in a normal closed tower box though. The thing is a behemoth. I could probably fit a human body inside it. It makes the board look so small! I had left it open a while after I put it together, until I managed to projectile a glass of water directly into the case. X.x;;; Yanked out the power cord, and somehow not a drop landed on any cards or boards. There was a literal puddle on top of the CD drive, the bottom of the case had a lint-swamp, and there was two drops on the very edge of the graphics card, but not on any circuitry. Disaster averted! Now my case is securely closed!

The first card I believe was just a DOA. The next two the cooler just stopped working after a few days. I was over at his place the first time that happened. We were running a GPU stress test. With his set up the GPU fans were the loudest in the case and they were humming along for a minute then just died and wouldn't kick on at all. After the same thing happened to the second (third) card he just gave up. I use Windows 7 64 bit and I haven't had any issues with my card, though I am jealous of his 460 so a small part of me kinda wishes I would...just kidding baby please be nice :P

Got the OS and Card for free, but I still plan on upgrading soon. There is however, one issue I'm having, not to do with the video card, but with the Dimms. The Dimms are 1333 but my board is defaulting them to 1066. when I tried to set the Dimms at 1333, my board would go as far as the BIOS, then shut down, so I had to change it back to 1066 and there is no issue. Is there more to it than just switching the DIMMs settings 800/1066/1333?

Would like to get a Fan aimed onto the Dimms when I get everything the way I want it. Took the Fan out of my Dell E310 tower but that hasn't been working on this board. I may have messed the fan up, if so, no real loss.
