Looks like it was added to Youtube yesterday and I don't remember seeing it elsewhere. Thanks, watching it now.

Edit: Everyone's been too busy bickering about surplus exp to notice this was out.

Generally you upload the video then keep it private for a bit to let quality set in and whatnot, it wasn't announced/made public till around 2amish PDT.

Excellent video! SE has always been fantastic at cutscenes, I don't know any company who can do them better.

I just regained my faith in SE, despite all the surplus-whining.

Definitely going Lalafell after seeing that scene with the chocobos!

I got goosebumps watching some of that. I look forward to watching the cut scenes in game now.

The cutscenes look so amazing! I wonder if we'll get any of the storyboard/concept art in the collector's edition journal. I'd love to see them in detail.

Is it weird that I liked how he whispered the last few words of every sentence?

It's weird, I kind of did the same thing when I was speaking Japanese back when I was taking Japanese classes...lol.

Did they just start calling it "North American Version" and such? The only difference I can see between the UK and NA version is the advert at the very end. I wonder what prompted this split.

Does this make anyone else want to read a Manga based on FFXIV? That art in the storyboards is really looking good!

What I found most interesting about this is that they are dynamically adding your character into what they are calling HD cut scenes. Historically, this has been impossible since it requires rendering your character on the spot, and by definition pre-rendered cut scenes are too high quality to render in real time. I can only think of two possibilities: One is that this only pertains to the starting cut scenes, wherein they have a very limited number of possible starting equipment to render. This would mean that they could render all of the possibilities seperately before-hand, then just call the appropriate starting cut scene with your character and gear. This seems unlikely, however, given that even with the limited number of possible equipment sets in the beginning of the game, we are still talking about thousands of possible permutations. More realistically, they may have added some sort of... internal cut scene renderer, that will take your character and render just him before playing the cut scene, then place him in scripted locations. Honestly, I've never heard it done like this, and even with the lowered workload, it will still take some time to pre-render your character with the higher definition. I would expect there to be a noticeable lag before a "HQ" cut scene started, like a 10-15 second lag.

I suppose they could just stick your low quality character model in the HQ cut scene, but that would be... jarring.

I kind of thought it was missing showing off things we haven't already seen, compared to the previous videos. It was really interesting to see the in-process comparisons for events, but it didn't show off any that we haven't already seen in trailers. In the other videos we got to see enemies, equipment, and areas that hadn't been shown before.

You're confusing their internal "HQ" name with a pre-rendered scene. The scenes are still rendered on the fly, just using more finely tuned animations and camera angles than normal gameplay.

I suppose that does make sense, I must confess, I was a little confused on their use of the term "HQ" cut scene, rather than pre-rendered. I figured it was some sort of propietary method of putting real-time rendered models into a pre-rendered environment. Thank you for clarifying that.

The scenes with the crawling monsters and the lalafell doing their chicken cowboy impressions were part of the trailer I saw @ Comicon last month...which basically convinced me to play XIV after swearing I wouldn't ><

The slow-mo part reminds me of Matrix for some reason...lol

Anyway excellent video! Makes me wanna play all 3 nations so I can watch all the cutscenes.

...Wait, is it possible? Will I be able to "switch" nations and start the story quest for that particular nation from the beginning?

That's why I'm thinking of choosing Gridania as my starter in the Open Beta, so Ul'dah (the city in which I want to start) will be the only one I haven't seen. Are you in/applying for the Open Beta? If anyone's applying, I wish them luck!

Cool video; I love getting to see it built up from rough renders to the finished project.

(Was it just me, or did anyone else see the rough render of the miqo'te and think, "Wtf? Her tail looks like they took a 2x4 and stuck it to her-" ...um yeah, it just kinda looked off, heh.)

Still, I love to see the different stages of development, and SE, for the record, if you need another crash test dummy for your motion capture, I would be more than happy to let you punish me! ^^

I'm the opposite; I'm gonna play Ul'dah in OB so I can start in Gridania at release. :D However you can only progress the story so far in the beta, so it'll be interesting to see if you'll be able to switch nations in the actual game, in order to experience all the cutscenes!

I was in Beta 3, so does that mean I'm automatically in the Open Beta? I remember reading that somewhere...

You should be in open beta.

I will be doing like many others. Playing Ul'dah in open beta so I can play Gridania at release.

1:22-1:32 - Eurgh.

Anyway, ridiculous motion capture acting aside, the rest was very entertaining. The storyboards in particular were incredible, as I expected them to be. I'm not sure I'd love an FF manga -- the idea of yet another hero of light seeking the magic crystal and defeating the evil *insert generic villain here* to save the kingdom of light doesn't thrill me -- but I would definitely enjoy a book filled with such storyboards as the ones in this "Making Of". I'm pretty sure the CE has a concept art bonus, now that I think on it... That's something to look forward to. :)

Also, anyone feel slightly put-off by the way these interviews are conducted? I mean, it's really no big deal, but it's been bothering me just a tad. Each interviewee stares at a specific direction and speaks very clearly with no mistakes and in an exact tone of voice that is unchanging whilst expressing no other emotion save for one of complaisant cheerfulness -- they all very much resemble automatons; there's not a shred of charisma to be found... But maybe that's just their overly polite and straight-laced style that I'm not used to? Meh. As long as I get to see the making of XIV, who am I to complain? :P

It's probably very strictly scripted, and those interviewed could be poor actors. In fact, you just closely described Keanu Reeves.

The models used in the cutscenes are the exact same models used in the game. They are just very well directed and animated game engine cutscenes.

What they mean by "HQ cutscenes" is that they use custom motions (FFXIV character and monster models use a skeletal animation system) instead of using standard emotes, movements, and "walk character from point A to point B"
