So I got my Conj up to Rank 8 in Beta 3, how come I never got traits? That middle section was always empty even though I had points I could allocate, just nothing to allocate them to.

By traits do you mean skills or abilities?

Skills, you have to click the bar on the top right hand corner and select the weapon (class) you want to select skills from. As for Abilities... I have no idea.

I got to 12 fisher and never got any traits. Not sure if they had any in the beta.

We will have to rewire our thinking as well. It's not abilities, it's Actions, specifically Battle Actions (which we can trigger) and Synthesis & Gathering Actions, which appear to be randomly triggered. Traits I assume are always on, but I could be wrong.

They disabled traits for the Beta. I can't remember where I heard that, might have been the beta forums themselves. They will be put in for release.

As Wint's Screeny shows, the Traits are empty. What are they? Why have we never seen any?

"Traits" are the class-specific abilities purchased with Guild Points.

Example for Thaumaturge:

Firm Conviction: Increases your Defense while casting.
A poster on BG confirmed that this trait is pretty powerful. He posted a screenshot showing his Thaum taking 216 points of damage from an Aldgoat Nanny under normal conditions, then 63 points of damage from the same goat while casting a spell.

Thaum also gets a Phantom Dart-like ability that immediately lowers enmity, and all classes can buy proficiency traits that increase how effective their spells/abilities are when used on another class by 10%, as well as stat-swap traits, like convert +10 Pie to +10 Vit.

Here is a screenshot of Traits being equipped (not taken by me):

I don't think many, if any, people got enough Guild Rank points to buy traits.

Some people have mentioned that the traits you gain don't always seem to help the Class you are using.

It seems it is another example of being rewarded for one class while leveling another. If you want to get the +10 STR you have to level Conjurer or some such.

Unlocking as many of the various Guilds' traits as possible seems to be the path of those looking for the optimal builds.

I really, really like those traits, as it allows you pour more into raw damage, and then equip less taken while casting and a few PIE into VIT traits as situations need. If there are quite a few of tiers of them that scale well, I can see a lot of mages going for them.

EDIT: Also a huge duh but for dudes that don't use magic attacking abilities (like melees, rangers). PIE-> VIT seems like a pretty sweet bargain, assuming you can eq something similar on those jobs.
