I just think that... people are really forgetting this game is in beta right now! LoL like, I can understand forming slight opinions of what you've done/seen so far, but the harsh criticism needs to end. The game we're playing, while it has completed elements in it, is an un-finished product. EXP values, mob placements, amount of quest/leves, etc... all of this stuff is currently in BETA TEST form. It's not final.

There will be a lot more to do at launch, exp values, strength and abilities of mobs and our own classes will likely be adjusted come sept. 22nd. Beta 3 is over and open beta hasn't begun yet so we haven't really seen much of how this surplus thing will go. I say lets try it out... see what happens, and THEN if it's bad we can throw SE under the bus. I'm just saying have a little faith. It's too early in the game to be THIS ****** off where there are millions of threads about the same topics. Let's be a little optimistic here. I'm sure any MAJOR issues the game has at launch will be quickly(well, that's actually wishful thinking) addressed by SE. Lets just give it time, k? :-)

How can anyone possibly forget it's beta when every other post on this forum has that phrase in it somewhere?

Yet, they are. Every other post is someone making it obvious that they either have forgotten truly that it is beta, or that they don't understand what a beta is and what makes it different from the finished release.

It's not that they have forgotten it's beta but they know that beta has less than a month left and many of the things they consider a problem either cannot be solved in such a short amount of time or will be there at release as confirmed by SE.

Here are my thoughts -

I just want to freaking start my character and start playing. Hurry up 22nd. I don't think it's going to be as bad as everyone thinks. It is going to be a fun game with nice graphics. I just hope it has staying power. I couldn't tell if it did or not from the beta, because all the starting zones were crowded and there was a lot to learn, so I really couldn't get much done.

I think the REAL problem is that we all need to take a night off from worrying about the whole thing and get plastered together [those under 21 shall be given energy drinks in lieu of alcohol]

The only rule: No mentioning ANYTHING about the game :)

Well... yea that's true. I get that. But what I'm saying is, we don't know EXACTLY how it'll play out come the 22nd. SE has already said they're planning on tweaking it and they're futher testing it to optimize it as best they can... I'm just saying the point of the beta is to test all these things and give them a run through. All of these things will be APPLIED in the final release, but they're still not 100% yet. I'm just saying we need to wait to see the final product to throw major opinions around.

The fact at the end of the day is that is will effect people. And those people will be hindered from doing something the enjoy. Then people come along and say "Well why don't you play this way and quit complaining." Well I don't want to play that way, and the fact is that I want to play this way and the only reason this is made so I can't is so that your feelings don't get hurt (Not directed at you).

Wait until the game is released and see how surplus is then, it might be something you never see or only see a couple times a month or so. It might be tweaked so that maybe you drop to 90% xp for one day a week. It might not be that bad, so wait and see about it.

Hurray, another "It'll get better in the final release!" post.

We're less than a month away from release now so you're less likely to get drastic changes as in the earlier parts of beta. Things may be tweaked, but don't go expecting massive differences between OB and the final product.

Sure, I'll wait to see what happens in OB, but I'd be very surprised if they made sweeping changes from beta 3 considering how much has already been done.

But the fact of the matter is that this is the way SE has made the game. You can continue to whine until you get your way (which may take a good while), or you can adapt to the way the game is designed. I, for one, am not happy about the Surplus either, but at this point, SE is really adamant about it staying and will likely remain so for at least until the PS3 version. Instead of me getting my panties in a bunch, I've decided to see how bad it is in the retail version before I start taking drastic measures (basically quitting the game).

Yea... I get rated down cause I said the game is in beta, things are still being tweaked, and asking people to have a little faith before completely condemning something. Real mature.

Anyways, @ Deathly809 I totally hear you. I just like to believe SE isn't filled with that much stupidity. And if they are, that would really suck. Maybe I'm too much of an optimist, but (*IMO*) if it really rubs people the wrong way, SE will correct it. There's no way they're gonna let this title sink. Only thing I'm really asking is that we give this time. Every board I've been too over the past 2 days is going crazy over this surplus stuff and the boards aren't even fun anymore. It's like, how much hate can you have? How much can we really b*tch about something we haven't even SEEN in action yet? I'm just saying have a little faith. (also not directed at anyone in particular.

Expect big changes between Beta 3 and OB. SE already said monster placement will be changed(probably because it was set up the way it was for ease of testing) and we know there will be 2 more towns added. Other than this there has also been talk floating around that there will be more quests(not guildleves, quests) which AFAIK is unconfirmed.

Bottom line: Beta 3 was set up for ease of testing, OB will be for stress testing. Expect the final product to differ.

That is my MAIN reason for being so optimistic. Betas are designed for testing. The things that are in beta will be tweaked an APPLIED to a final finished product. But the way they're presented in beta is all for testing. Things don't work, they'll be tweaked. Things that DO work may not balance will other things so they may STILL be tweaked. Key word for me: BETA. Because I'm sure SE won't let this thing pull a Star Wars Galaxies before it's even released lol

Another thing people forget is that this is an MMORPG, and it's never really a "final version". It is a "release version". Many MMORPGs, including WoW, are/were littered with problems at release.

I think the "its just beta" defense is losing steam, when devs continue to come out and confirm most of the problems people have with beta, with a "but we'll look into it" thrown on the end.

I'm sure some things will be better, but from the sounds of it, Surplus XP, long guildleve cooldowns, and poor mouse support are all getting released.

WELL... the guildleve thing I'm thinking won't be an issue due to the A) The party aspect of it and B) there will be a lot more to do upon release. I definitely see guidleve's working themselves out. Surplus XP... I think we need to wait and see. And mouse control... I don't think ANYBODY used a mouse in FFXI. We'll see if they optimize it for the ones that do, but... eh, idk. Let me take my optimistic *** somewhere else lol.

Oh god, now we have to talk about our feelings?

Seriously, though, I'm with you on the whole (cautious) optimism thing. A lot of people (myself included) have been panicking over all this stuff, but I'm hoping it won't be as bad at Open Beta or release. And if it's as bad as everyone's fearing, I'm hoping SE will admit to their mistake and work to fix it.

Well SE publicly stated that they were going to adjust the surplus system for the open beta. So I think in a few days we can get so much more accurate data. I am trying to save my harsher judgements for that time. It looks like it will get a bit better, we just need to see to what degree. In either event, I doubt this system will have much staying power. A few months at most in all likely hood. It's obviously a tough pill to swallow for many, and that should matter.

Well as long as I have played any Final Fantasy title I would be hard pressed to say that any of them sucked. Yeah thats right I even enjoyed ffx-2. That said we all have our favorites and maybe some would say a few sucked when compared to other ff titles but not compared to other games in the genre.

Something that I am concerned about is how much xp will we get. I assumed the amounts in beta were just so that we can see and test certain skills. I personally enjoy getting 1k xp or more from completing a synth or local guild leve just curious as to how much xp we will actually get.

Have faith my friends we will all know soon enough September is almost here. :)

P.S Lets be honest most of us on these forums know we are only blowing vented emotions when we say stuff like "Im quitting the game" or "im not gonna play it". We know better. :)

Honestly what I would like to see fixed is the laggy menus and streamline the crap out of them. Even if you used a controller the menu took forever to scroll down. Also crafting lag from the time you hit sythesize to the time the char kneels down and the mats window opens up needs to be sped waaaay up.

Fix those things first SE as it is an interface issue not a design or system issue like the dreaded "surplus" issue.

My fear is that so much attention is on surplus that other less infamous but equally important matters will get overlooked.

The reason they were laggy is because they were all hosted server side instead of client side. The theory was that this was a beta diagnostic tool.

If they don't move this to client side for RTM, we've got a bigger problem than the one that's so big I don't need to mention it by name for everyone to know what I'm talking about.

TaruHunk, this is a very familiar sentiment that many of the people here share. I don't really think anyone at all is forgetting the game's current status. Those who follow the interviews closely are worried at the things that have been stated will not change.

It's reasonable to see so much activity from posters about their thoughts at this point. Although it may not be entirely true, it feels as if it's now or never to get it right! In fact it's true that the general public will likely only give the game one shot at holding their attention. It's not the end of the world if the impatient move on quickly, but I, for one, would like to see FFXIV increase the general popularity of the series.

At any rate, I will personally give it time, as you suggest.

I think your 100% right. The closer we get to the 22nd the worse I feel these post are going to get. Just mentioning the S word gets you nothing but a spam of drawn out off topic post and down ratings.
We just need to drop it for a day or 2 and relaxe. People just need to stop worrying and play the game when it comes out. If they don't like it, quit, if you do like then play the game.

Honestly, I think that the folks reminding us that this is only a Beta are forgetting it's also a game that has allegedly been in development for the better part of five years.

A lot of this stuff seems so last minute (indeed, the entire beta itself is rather rushed), and just feels like it's nowhere near the level of polish it should have at this point. Major changes to game mechanics are probably not what they should be working out with less than a month to release. That's why people are worried and why there are so many WTF threads.

I'm with you TaruHunk, like a lot are saying it is still just beta things can and most likely will change. I'm really not all that worried about surplus because I'm a more casual guy and plan to spread my play time out over various things.

Granted it is less than a month til release but the good thing about mmo's is that there really isn't a final release, the game will continue to change (and hopefully for the better). Bottom line is if the surplus thing really blows and starts to affect subscriptions SE will change it, they've worked too hard on this game for it to fail because of the surplus system.

That's not a fact. It's your outlandish guess at what will happen if surplus is in retail the exact way it was during beta phase 3, not accounting for the bugs and other stuff that made it worse.

It is bad enough that people can't even talk about it because of the amount it upsets people and gets peoples emotions all rilled up.
