I doubt this is going to win me any friends here, but I hated this trailer.

The song lyrics made my physically cringe, and the captions were pretentious gibberish. I fail to find that crap charming anymore.

2 minutes of people walking is a bad start to a trailer for anything but a walking simulator.

A minute of pre-rendered CGI fight scenes, and maybe 10 seconds of actual combat gameplay? Come on SE, this is 2010 - pre-rendered CGI doesn't count, especially when you're using it for basically all the really interesting and exciting parts, and some of the cinematography was really bad anyway. And the combat gameplay footage itself was unimpressive.

I'm divided.

On the one hand the fan boy in me wants to go "OMGosh, that's amazing! What's happening? What is the story? It looks like it'll be EPIC!"

And then the realist in me goes "Ok, things I learned from this trailer: SE knows their graphics and this game is a masterpiece, a piece of moving art. But it explained nothing. The lines were trash - I think all of us are laughing at them. They tried so hard to be epic that they went overboard and came off as goofy. The action spoke for itself - let it!

However, the action had no context. As a potential buyer, I still have no idea what this game offers. I loved the amazing fight scenes, but what WERE they? Who is the same guy who shows up in a lot of the scenes? What's going on?"

It really answered very little, and instead just showed off what has been the ONLY consistent high point we have heard about the game - it's beautiful. I think many of us feel the same way - we know it looks good... what else can you tell us?

The theme song reminds me of Crystal Chronicles' theme. I love the theme so much.

Susan Calloway is the theme's singer and I found the full version on YouTube in case anyone is interested.

I'm guessing the Hyur is something like what Prishe was, a central character in the main storyline of the game as you progress through missions. It seems more like the past FFs than XI, which used chicks like Lion, Aphmau, and Prishe. He is hot though, so maybe I'll like him. I'm in love with Miqo'te, but I'm sorry, Y'shtola just doesn't push my buttons. My char is way hotter than her. Smiley: lol

Pretty much, some creative eye candy to make people go "Oooh what's that all about?" Then you get the detailed information elsewhere...

Well, how I see it is they aim to keep the main parts of the story concealed to spark interest.

I mean, they're not just going to tell you what it's all about. They allude to it, yes, but they're not just going to write it out and spoil everything. I feel that it's a useful trailer for it's purpose: a trailer. It's meant to get the interest of the viewer without spoiling the product, like movie trailers.

If you're talking about more information about the games' systems, then usually promotional trailers don't do such unless it's a key point of something that was fixed in a previous game of the same series. It's not a strong selling point otherwise from a PR point of view.

Precisely. This trailer ultimate purpose is supposed to 'tease' the world and the story at large. At that point if it catches peoples interest to see what the game is all about, then the trailer did its duty. This is why the first part of the trailer was framed the way it was. Have an emotional vocal melody at the start (To showcase production value of scene editing and music) and then have it placed with some of the more memorable but peaceful regions of the game. The second half is all action, showcasing the conflict that is within the game, without actually spoiling everything about the conflict itself. The small 10 seconds of actual gameplay in the trailer is only supposed to show what you yourselves can do within such an 'epic' world and storyline (Thus why they only showed abilities and magic and little about the actual flow of the game). Everything else is superfulous and will only bog down the pace of the trailer itself.

I've puzzled most of the lyrics I think... Stuff in carrots I think I probably have wrong, but don't know what to put. Those male voices chanting in the start are in English, but it took me a while to realize. The clashing chaotic chorus after the 1st main verse is tricky, at certain points i KNOW hear some English words, but then other times I'm pretty sure I hear the syllables correctly and they aren't forming English words.

[Male chanting, which I believes represents the mortal races]
I close my eyes let us find not we suffer
Release your hands for your <wheel> brought us <under>
My legs don't <hide> tell us where must we wander
How can we carry on if he <then> chose <beyond> us

[female lead who seems to represent the gods?]
To all of my children in whom life flows abundant
To all of my children to whom death hath passed his judgment
The soul yearns for honor
And the flesh there here-after
Look to those who walked before
To lead those who walk after

Shining is the land's light of justice
Ever flows the land's well of purpose
walk free walk free walk free believe
The land's alive so believe.

[clashing loud male and female choruses: Sometimes I pick out words like suffer, weakness, reason, and listen... But often the opera voices are drowned out by drums and placed too much over each other. Above this chaos a female voice chants a few words, starting quietly and growing, this may be the lead:]
Feel
<dance>
teach
feel
feel
<Grace>
teach
speak
<speech>
tell
tell
hope
hope
wish
wish
roam
roam
roam
roam
sleep
sleep
sleep
sleep on...

[female lead]
Now open you eyes, while our plight is repeated
Still death to our cries, lost in hope we lie defeated
Our souls have been torn, and our bodies forsaken
Bearing sins of the past, for our future is taken

War, born of strife these trials, they sway us not,
Words without sound, these lies betray our thoughts,
Mired by a plague of doubt, the land she mourns
judgment binds all we hold to a memory of scorn
Tell us why given life we are meant to die?
Help us in our plight!

[all voices]
Weakness
suffer
<Borrow>
Reason
Follow
Suffer
Wander
Listen
Whisper
<shoulder>
<follow>
<clever>
Answer

Answer together!

My life is a riddle to bear rapture and sorrow
to listen to suffer to entrust unto tomorrow
in one fleeting moment from the land doth life flow
