Thanks to those that mentioned the ATI CPU price dropFollow

I was going to buy a new PC a few days ago, then a couple of people on here mentioned ATI were having a price cut on I7 950 CPU's. Price dropped today and I've managed to get a 950 for near enough the same price as the 930 I was going to get.
Thanks for the heads up, very much appreciated :)

I think you're a bit confused. Either that or a very bad troll with nothing to do.

Not sure about the i7 950, but I'm pretty sure the 930 had a price drop recently.

According to this post: http://www.igniq.com/2010/08/23/intel-i7-massive-price-cuts/

The price on the i7 950 will be dropping to around 300 on August 30th. Thats cutting the price in half. Pretty awesome.

I wasn't one of the people who mentioned the price cut, but I would like to add some very important video card news. For those who want to upgrade to ATI/Nvidia's best(or midrange) wait, as the ATI HD 6xxx series is supposedly set to launch in October/November. This means price cuts for everything else!

Real shame it only seems to be on the 950, and is STILL at least a year too late.

BTW, O/P, on the off chance that you're not a very confused troll. . intel makes the i7 950 :)

From what I understand, its just going to be a refresh of the 5xxx series. Better, but not crazy better. The 7xxx series is suppose to be out sometime 2011, and that will be a whole new series at the 28nm process, so in theory these cards should be pretty crazy for performance.

I bought an I7-870 for 309 euro instead of the 499 euro listed on their old website today!
But not sure if it was an official pricecut or if the guy mixed up de prices with the I7-860 :]

No mistake, the i7-870 has been reduced since the i7-880 hit the market.

not entirely sure this will affect my choice for CPU, how future-proof would the i7-950 be versus the Phenom II X6-1090T?

I bought my 930 at microcenter for $199. Do not buy other things though, most of it's a rip-off. Even more expensive than Fry's which slays best buy. Actually I bought a few things at Fry's for the same cost as newegg. Microcenter ftw on intels though.

So there are Intel fanboys and ATI fanboys, both of whom will vehemently defend their respective companies to the death.

How do they feel about the ATI i7s? :p

Don't worry, I near nVidia is lowering the prices on Phenom II X4s too.

As sweet as the 5970 sounds, can't believe anyone would spend a grand on that card yet...you wont even get anything out of it that a 5870 can't do, would've saved quite a bit of cash 'til the GPU had a price drop atleast. I hope when the 6000 series releases the 5870 drops to a reasonable price, I'd get two and run then in xfire.

I hear you loud and clear. I got a pretty good deal though. I couldn't say no to a 5970 for $430!

That's really difficult to say atm. . as AMD's upcoming bulldozer chip is moving to a format that is on the surface similar to the intel i7 series [calling it a hyperthreaded quad core is a little misleading, but it communicates what AMD is trying to accomplish]

Unfortunately Bulldozer will NOT be compatible with existing AM3 motherboards. They're moving to a new AM3+ socket, which will be backwards compatible with existing AM3 chips.

It seems that the whole hyperthreading concept is what they're moving towards, so I'd have to say the i7950 would be the more future proof one. . depending on what you're doing. I like my 1090t, and after finding out that bulldozer won't be 8/16 I don't think I'll be trying to figure out how to get one into my new rig. . unless the reviews somehow show that they get double the performance of my overclocked X6 ;)

Given that I build computers being fully aware that by the time I fish for a new processor, a new mobo will probably be involved I'll probably stick with the X6 (also given that I have a fairly good mobo in terms of price/features lined up for the X6). This is unless by the time I get around to buying the components, the price on i7-980X extremes has been slashed
