In FFXI the crafting system was very advanced and something that took a long time to master, however obtaining the items to craft with where very hard to get at certain points. Since the game was only soloable for most jobs to a average level of 20 collecting the required items for some crafts meant grouping was the only option or buying them from the auction house.

The leveling system was nice to a degree as well but forced grouping came into play past level 20 besides a couple of jobs. It was fun to group and learn all the dynamics of the game however if you didnt have at least a good 2 or more hours to group you wouldnt get very far or sometimes even accepted into groups, making the casual players have a really hard time leveling. There where not very many quests to do besides missions and artifact, none of which helped to getting experience for leveling up, making the only option to level was to group and grind experience in certain zones to obtain a higher level.

So my questions for FFXIV are, will you be able to solo in the game without forced grouping to level up. Are there going to be any quests available to do for experience or money. And will crafting be something you are able to do by farming your own materials and not having to rely on grouping to obtain the items to craft with.

This is looking to be a very nice game, if anyone has any info on these questions it would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance for all your answers!

Yes, soloing can be done. Levequests can be done on solo level though they provide fewer rewards the gil they give is still pretty substantial. It is unknown whether soloing to endgame is viable, but I think there will still be an emphasis on group play (leveling in groups will still be faster) but solo players will still be able to progress. Crafting guildleves give you the ingredients you need to complete the task and give you crafting skill ups (for free!) - the gathering classes Miner, Fisher and Botanist provide a lot of crystals and materials to work with.

You will still need to cooperate with people but all in all this game appears to be designed with the idea in mind that not everyone can play for five hours at every sitting. Long sessions will still be beneficial but if you have less time you should be able to enjoy the game.

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

Also crafting will level you up along with lvling that craft. Botany seems to gather mats for Leathercraft, Carpentry, and Weaving. Mining for Blacksmith, Armorer and Goldsmithing. Fishing for Cooking among few others.

So I would say yes indeed it is easier to obtain your own materials atleast as it stood in beta 3.
