Anyone know what the difference is? I haven't seen it discussed much. Proficiency is what you gain as you attack, xp is (obviously) what you gain when the mob dies. They're definitely not the same. I take it this is XIV's version of weapon skill? How do you view your progression of skill?

Proficiency points are just the running tally of individual skillups you get during a fight after landing an attack or spell. Skill points are the sum total of the proficiency points you accumulated during the fight, and are only awarded if you actually defeat the mob.

Example:

Your Spirit Dart hits the Rebel for 43 points of damage.
Your Conjury skill proficiency improves by 100.
Your Spirit Dart hits the Rebel for 43 points of damage.
Your Conjury skill proficiency improves by 100.
Your Spirit Dart hits the Rebel for 43 points of damage.
Your Conjury skill proficiency improves by 100.
*mob dies*
You gain 2301 experience points.
You gain 300 conjury skill points.
The Rebel is defeated.

TL;DR - Skill points (aka class exp) = sum of individual proficiency points (aka skillups) accumulated during the fight.

I think they should take out the proficiency gained messages altogether. All I care about is the skill points, seems like the proficiency is just a part of the skill point system that isn't necessary for viewing.

Ofcourse its important. Don't you want to know what you did during the fight that actually gave you the skillpoints?

I agree, I like seeing the skillup message. It always makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something as opposed to just the static end of battle message.
