Alternative to official ATI drivers for HD 5850?Follow

I just upgraded my venerable XP Pro 64 to 7, and everything works great except the benchmark. The window opens and it immediately crashes, giving an APPCRASH message about a file called atiumdag.dll. A couple hours of googling and experimenting later I still have no solution. I tried using compatibility mode, changing to different versions of the drivers, changing options in CCC, rebooting (hey, you never know); the problem persists.

I don't know what else to do. Is there a good alternative these days, or a workaround I haven't found?

What version of the driver do you have?

Driver Packaging Version 8.69-091211a-094918C-ATI
Catalyst™ Version 10.1
Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
2D Driver Version 8.01.01.994
2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
Direct3D Version 8.14.10.0723
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.9252
Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2009.1211.1547.28237

As you can see, it's an older version due to my switching back and forth to see if that made any difference. Previously it was 10.8.

I was using 10.6 that came with my Asus card. It wouldn't run the benchmark but the official ATI 10.6 drivers did. I am currently on 10.5 due to it being the most stable with the beta.

Microsoft DirectX Runtime Installer. Download this and make sure you update your DirectX files. For Windows 7 64-bit it will be about 100MBs of updates. If you get a Cryptograhic Service error or whatever. Download this one here. It's the June 2010 DirectX redistributable which will contain everything that the first installer installs.

Also if you're going to mess around with drivers get this: Driver Sweeper. Download this, then reboot computer and go into safe mode, which is commonly done by pressing F8 a few times right after bios. Might take a few times to get it right. Run Driver Sweeper, select ATI Graphics. Let it uninstall all of that. Reboot. Safe mode again and run Driver Sweeper again to make sure all the files are gone.

Then reboot computer normally, no safe mode; then install the latest ATI Catalyst. I am still having problems with the latest Catalyst 10.8 because of my 5770 power save mode. I have to use MSI Afterburner to fix it and make it run right. But this is a BIOS issue. I could easily remedy it with a BIOS mod but eh, just don't feel like messing with it.

I second this as well and completely forgot about it. I was leaning more toward the driver side seeing how the erroneous file had ATi in it.

Look into a program called driver sweeper. It will completely remove the drivers so you can install then without overwriting. Maybe that will help since you are swapping drivers so much.

Edit: Added link.

Thirded. Especially with swapping drivers you can end up where one or more versions of the installer/uninstaller leave stuff around on your system and end up with things in an odd state. Often you can run Driver Sweeper without safe mode, but safe mode's the one way to be sure you can remove everything. Uninstall with the ATI utility (including removing the ATI manager itself), run Driver Sweeper and remove all traces of the ATI drivers, then you can install a recent version of the official Catalyst drivers. 10.8 should work fine. I'm on 10.7 currently on my laptop with no issues (even though Mobility drivers can be a pain), for example. :)

If you really want to look at unofficial drivers, I used to use the Omega drivers back in the day. No idea the state of them currently, as the official drivers haven't given me problems in a long time.

While I've used many drivers over the years, I haven't for the last year or so. They seemed to do next to nothing for me compared to the official ones + tweaking tools like ATI Tray Tools or nHancer/RivaTuner.

I just did a quick check and DNA drivers seem to be the only ones still updated (that I remember at least).

Can try Tweakforce too although it's not so updated.

Edit: By changing options in the CCC, did that include Catalyst AI? Can do strange things to programs.

Edit2: You may want to try here for more direct support.

Solved! Driver Sweeper did what CCC's built in uninstall could not. It's running wonderfully now. Thank you.

Also, what's this AI you speak of?

Catalyst AI, it's one of the options in CCC. Honestly I have no clue what it does, it's usually set to "Standard" and I think "Advanced" will start disabling things to improve performance or something like that. I just leave it alone and ignore it exists. >.>

It's outdated, but: ATI Tweak guide. Catalyst AI description is on page 7.

You'll really want to look into ATI Tray Tools to replace CCC entirely. (see page 9 and 10 of the tweakguide) Most ATI users would recommend this path. However, I've not been with ATI for over a year, so the CCC may have improved, but I doubt it improved much if so.

CCC doesn't seem like as much of a pig these days, or at least if it is I'm not noticing it. It's decent enough, at least, though it's probably still best to use something else if you're so inclined. (Me, I'm just lazy and don't tweak much, so stick with CCC just since it's a single installer for both. :)

Even Driver Sweeper won't remove everything. If you install 10.1 or higher and then drop back to 9.12 or earlier Open-GL will no longer work. The only way to fix this is to manually remove the DLLs in safe mode.

The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:
