Sooo Open beta from what I have heard starts sept??

From reading some posts I noticed some people saying basicly all can get in.

Anyone have an idea how that all works because I would love to get a chance to test the game before release.

Firstly there is some confusion as to what SE means by saying Open beta.

If it does mean all can get in than there is an application process.

Otherwise its for those that got in beta previously to experience the latest content and new starting areas(been limited to Limsa Lominsa).

I believe it begins on Tuesday Aug 31 at 7pm pst.

Stay tuned for more details as it gets closer to Tuesday.

It's definitely Open Beta. There's an article somewhere detailing this. I don't see SE hosting a Public Beta anyways...

There will still be an application for open beta, but of course those already in the beta will be given the appropriate key. As for how extensive the application process will be, who knows. I'm just hoping it's enough so I can get in and give it a go, since I didn't manage to get selected for the closed beta period. :)

So far, just have to keep watching for more info on open beta from SE. Start is 2am GMT on Wednesday (7pm PT, 10pm ET on Tuesday), so presumably they'll have to open up apps Monday-ish to get whatever pool they'll be selecting from before the period opens, but that's just speculation on my part.

What's the difference between closed beta and open beta if you still have to apply to get in?

That's what I've always thought but people also seemed certain it could be the other way

Open Beta officially, is the beta stage where the NDA is fully dropped. Recently most mmos have used it more as a demo then anything which has caused some people to not realize this.

The "open" is often referring to the flow of information, as in there's no restrictions on sharing information about the game (screens, videos, etc.), since it's basically in the form of the retail release (as opposed to earlier when users will be under NDAs because everything is subject to change). It could very well end up being very open to the public (with applications more for keeping track of who's in), but we'll have to wait and see once they open up the new applications (which must have changed if they aren't keeping the apps from closed beta).

EDIT - fixed quote tag

As far as we can tell, SE's definitions work like this:

Closed Beta = Full NDA, and very limited content.
Open Beta = No, or limited NDA, with most of the games content in place.

When the applications for closed beta were up, the deal was that you could apply as many times as you wanted, but only your most recent application would be valid. However, only one submission was required for all phases.

I think the re-application option was there mostly for those of us who upgraded our computers since the time of our application.

Is there any other way to know when the applications can be summit other than keep refreshing the page each 15 seconds?

On the other hand, if you were in beta 3, is it necessary to apply for open beta, or you get to start automatically?

If you were in beta already you're good to go for open beta. People who were already in beta are supposed to be getting an email with a new key for the open beta. I guess that should be coming pretty soon if it starts on Tuesday, this was mentioned earlier in the week, but no updated info since.

EDIT
Or maybe the email thing was about giveaway keys only -shrugs-

Open beta has slightly different meanings for different games. For some, it means available to a large group of people. For others, it means available fully to the public.

My impression of SE's definition:

Closed Beta: Limited number of players, partial of full NDA, very limited content.
Open Beta: Much larger group (still limited), complete lift of the NDA, much more content (although even more at retail).

Personally, I think it's going to be open to anyone and everyone who wants to get in. Why? Well there are two reasons.

1) The Square Enix update email that went out a few days ago. It was to everyone on their newsletter, and read "Get your PC up and running, open beta is just around the corner!". Perhaps it's just wishful thinking on my part, but sending that to the masses leads me to believe anyone will be able to participate.

2) The throttling of the server population. They stated somewhere that they are only going to allow so many people on at a time and everyone else will be given a place in line after the servers reach capacity. Now, they went through three beta stages, so I'm sure they are somewhat aware of their capabilities. By the wording it just seemed as though they expected everyone and their moogle to be logging on.
