folks wasnt sure if OB was invite only or public.

i quote "The FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test begins on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 2:00 (GMT)! We hope to see everyone participate!"

would suggest its public

I don't think that's the case I'm affraid..I could be wrong, but I'm not sure why people would need to 'apply' if it were 'open'. We'll soon find out I guess!

Looking forward to everyone participating could also mean, "we hope all of you sign up for beta!". I'm leaning more toward having to be invited in considering needing to have activated your beta 3 key by the end of closed beta to be automatically in the open beta.

It was the ambiguity of this tweet amd lack of following information that raised this question to begin with ;)

I wouldn't lose all hope. I expect you have to apply to get a code, because the beta requires a Square Enix account. It could be as simple as apply, get your code a few days later, and then jump in and start playing.

Nobody knows at this point Smiley: grin

You would think they would have let us know something by now, Open beta is supposed to start in less than 36 hours. Everything Square is doing feel really really rushed.

Well since the link from their Twitter can only be accessed by those with a Beta account (have to sign in with your Beta account to read it), I assume 'everyone' means 'everyone with a beta account already'?

What they meant was "everyone who we want to see."

I can see it now:

"It was a mistranslation."

If it's open to Everyone, they better announce it sooner as the open beta starts tomorrow.

Like I said in another post, it already says on the FFXIV/beta site "applications for open beta starts soon", more or less.

One would think that opening the applications early would be indicative of a "closed" open beta". Afterall, they would need time to sort and sift and send out keys to those of their choosing. However, if it is a "public" open beta, they could open the form after the servers go up and all you have to do is fill out a form and a key automatically (or whatever their process may be).

I don't look for them to open the applications until after it goes live, or shortly beforehand. That way, all the previous beta testers will have priority for the client update and won't be hammered with the resulting bottleneck lag from the rush of anxious gamers.

Existing testers actually already have access to the open beta version of the client (see some other threads), so they're in the process of getting updated now, even though it sounds like none of them have gotten their open beta keys yet. Apps could conceivably open at any time, whether or not the selection process is involved at all (can always collect the info then hit a button later on to mass-mail keys if it's as simple as "apply, get key" or they /random on the back-end).

Since it's SE, it's hard to say what's going to happen, so we just need to keep our eyes out and apply whenever they end up opening up apps. :) (And hope to get a key emailed back.)
