Porridge is too hot, or too cold.

Now that XIV is eating graphics cards for breakfast, people complain about the system requirements being too HIGH.

Just a funny observation.

When did people ever complain about XI's graphics? They were great for 2002 and still hold up nicely.

I often heard complaints about how FFXI was "dumbed down" graphics wise to allow for the PS2-base etc.

They were epic at the time! I remember running arround and thinking everything was stunning. Even though my computer doesn't handle FFXIV too well im happy that it set its standards high, that way it will survive a couple of years without falling behind.

FFXIV will shave about 2 years off my CPU longevity I think lol, but it will be an enjoyable 2 years.

I am actually looking into adding water cooling because of the high temps under load on my i7 processor.

While pretty simple, I think FFXI has some of the best graphics I've ever seen in an MMO. the animations are basic, textures are simple, but all in all, its prettier to look at than wow or LOTRO

There is no denying XIV has good graphics, but I am not sure SE has optimized it very well. As good as the graphics in XIV are, the requirements to run them seem too high. XI has some unoptimized graphical issues as well. Weather effects in XI will still cause issues even on newer computers today, including lag or pixilated skys. Shadows on the PC version is also implemented poorly and if turned on for all characters (not just yourself) can slow down the game way more than it should.

Can't forget that FFXI was originally programmed for PS2, and is a really poor port on the PC. Thankfully, FFXIV is the other way around!

I didn't start playing until 2004 but the graphics were pretty decent for a MMO from what I remember. Still kinda are. Aion is beating it graphics wise but it came out in 2009. or 10 I don't remember lol.

There is something called Moors law. It states technology doubles every two years( recently its been acelerating faster than that). So in about a year past release, requirements for FFXIV to run will be quite affordable. With an MMO there in it for the long haul.

Now, I'm not exactly COMPLAINING. . but when you spend $500 for a graphics card, Yea, I think you'd expect better performance from a game like FFXIV. Especially since, beautiful as the game is, it's graphics levels are NOT unique to the world of gaming. . .only the performance requirements. If other programs can do just as good with half the resources, why can't FFXIV??

I have my suspicions ;)

Hmmmm. I seem to remember being blown away by the graphics in FFXI when it was first released on PC for the NA market? I had just come from playing EQ1 for several years, and the difference between the two is like comparing Crysis to the original Super Mario Bros (ok not really, but you get the idea).

The problem is more SE's poor optimization. I haven't got to play the beta so I cannot really comment, but from what it looks like the complaints are about optimization not the graphics being too crysis like.

Final fantasy games are graphics powerhouse that always pushs the console system
at the time FFXI came out it was stunning compare to the other ps2 MMO ( Everquest online advantures )

FFXIV on PC is a diffrent ballpark since too many PC games have great graphic but compare to other ps3 is ganna be wild

Ya, I agree with Vawn43 here, you have to wonder how well programmed this game is. Don't get me wrong, it looks nice, but not THAT nice. Hopefully once the game is fully released, there will be more driver support for video cards and what not.

My gf is building a computer (not that she didn't need one to begin with) for FFXIV, and in the end it's only costing her about 700$.

Intel quad core I5
ASUS 5830
Corsair 550W psu
p55 Military grade msi motherboard
4gb patriot memory
seagate 1TB hard drive
generic shiny black case with a 12" fan on the side (lol... it glows blue, in her words)
Samsung 21.5" LED 1080 monitor

Keyboard and fan already had so that didn't include in the cost, not that it would've done much to it anyways.

So meeting the requirements for FFXIV isn't terribly difficult, just have to watch the right places. She's got about 50$ in rebates coming to her, plus over 200$ saved from sales.

Not to open a can of worms but i remember once, long ago in FFXI, a fellow player told me how he think WoW is so much better looking than FFXI. IMO, WoW was created outdated - FFXI has better animations, 3D models and a better art style all around. Of course i defended it to death at the time but i still realize today that people say thing that conflict with what i think is the best "and that's it! you have no say in this, because you're wrong and i'm right..." For example, recently some guy on the gamespot FFXIV forums said that he think guild wars 2 has better graphics than FFXIV...i don't see it. Some people say Aion does, I agree Aion has nice graphics but nowhere near as good as FFXIV's. I guess it all comes down to taste in the end. Some people use to tell you FFXI's graphics were crap and others hailed them kings of the MMO genre at the time...even today there are mixed opinions about FFXIV's graphics - of course majority will think they're good but its all taste.

FFXI's graphics are fine. They were. They are.

People put too much emphasis on graphics anyway.

I don't know about poor optimization. Sure, they have some things to iron out, but it seems the trouble comes from dumbing things down to run on lower end equipment. This game looks absolutely stunning on full high settings. Mind blowingly good. But since they want people to be able to play it, i think they are tuning things down a notch. I doubt it is as simple as flipping a switch to get it just right. Just my opinion anyway.

I dare say that I agree, though I don't think that it's too bad. The game looks pretty close to Age of Conan to me as far as graphics go, and that game ran smooth as silk on my comp. In FFXIV's beta I'm experiencing some lag, even when I turn my settings way down. In fact, the lag seems to be completely unaffected by whether or not I set the graphics to High or Low, which is very odd to me. It's not game-breaking at all (well, maybe with the exception of the mouse lag) but it is noticeable.

Everyone seems to be praising the graphics. It's like no one noticed there aren't any environmental shadows. Character shadows fade out barely any distance away from another player, even on the highest settings.

FFXIV has NO REASON to be as demanding as it is while it still looks pretty poor. You may say "it's the best looking MMORPG I've seen", but is it the best looking while still offering great performance like a multitude of other MMORPGs? No. I've seen plenty of other games of varying genres that look great and quite a few were better looking than FFXIV, not to mention they performed worlds better. The graphics aren't anything new to me due to all the reasons I've stated.

Crysis was blamed for its lack of optimization when in reality it was incredibly optimized. You cannot get that high graphic fidelity without cost. Sure, they're different genres, but you cannot honestly say that FFXIV is justified in any way to perform as horrible as it does.

I feel the need to link this again.

I'll retake the shots in open beta to see if anything changed, like you know, them adding shadows. I may also add more setting differences in the process.

PS: Don't bash WoW's graphics, it's a completely different art style. By that mindset you should go call all cartoon or cell shaded art styles 'garbage' since they're not 'realistic'.

The main thing I'm seeing in tech forums is that the irritation has to do with what you actually get. Yes the graphics are nice, but they're nothing spectacular. People just don't think some old dx9 engine should need such a powerful machine. I have to say, I agree.

The point is, people's graphics cards eat better looking games for breakfast and with XIV it's the other way around with no signs of why.

yeah go ahead, hit the red button.
