How long before release date does a world wide game usually go gold? I never really pay attention when i see that a game has gone gold. Doesn't something like that take a month or so?

"Go gold" refers to the game's goldmaster. The final version which can no longer be edited upon a game's publishing.

In an MMO case though it can be edited at pretty much any time.

Edit: To refer to the actual question I kind of answered it that in this case it doesn't really matter. The game patches.

By a developer's standards and what I meant was that a goldmaster copy is what you would ship off to the publishers and those who distribute the game when the game is at it's "finished state".

So, you don't ship off something which still needs edits to your publisher and then go "oh wait sorry even though you're in the middle of distributing it here I fixed this character and made them look better".

These days yes patches can fix problems/add more to the game but I'm talking in terms of publishing and distribution.

Yeah my question is along the lines of how long does it take to print, package, and deliver the product now a days?

Depends on the developer and the publisher and several other things.

Square-Enix is both a developer and a publisher. I would estimate in some cases around one month. But, I think FFXIV is already set to go.

Anything else to be added or fixed in the game is done through patches.
