In Final Fantasy XI Valkurm Dunes was the area where players gathered together to grind exp from levels 10-20. Being that 1-9 were a solo endeavor, this was the first time most people were partying on their first job.
Hilarity often ensued from people showing up with little to no gear, groups over camping and other such shenanigans. If it could go wrong, it happened in the Dunes.

Valkum Dunes

A place where we level from Lv10 in FFXI.

Everyone goes there for some reason.

Everyone levels their main and subjobs there.

Except for us stubborn folk who soloed as far as possible before giving in...I usually got to 15-16 soloing then got a pt, I like to say it was to farm while leveling(which was part of it), but no doubt another reason was to avoid some of those awful 10-14 parties...

The Dunes was blood on the sands. You can ask FFXI vets and I'm willing to bet that besides endgame areas the Dunes is where they died the most.

Oddly enough after leveling in the dunes the first time i vowed to never take another class there again...

All other classes I made sure i got folks to party in the Bubu Peninsula.... some folks didnt realize that you could get the subjob quest in Mhuara and get all items in Bubu Pen... and never make use of the Dunes. I assume this is what SE intended for WIndurst folks but very few took advantage of it... Not looking forward to the Valk equivalent in XIV i WILL find a way to avoid that area like the plague...

If you're familiar with Final Fantasy XI, it's similar to Jeuno. If not, think of it as Washington DC to the rest of the United States -- sort of.

It was definitely more efficient soloing to level 15-16 with proper gear and food than it was partying in dunes from 10-20...i usually did solo up to 16 and found me a party for a couple levels up to 19 before i got the **** out of there and went to Qufim....god i miss FFXI, i hope XIV is just as good, can't freakin wait any more!!!

My memories of the dunes..
Horrible pick up parties. War's didn't voke off mages, pullers linked EVERYTHING.
Flies. Welcome to your first taste of deadly poison.
Goblins. Bomb Toss ... No Thanks!
(Back in the day, you could even get killed by a mobs aoe without being in the party fighting it. Oh what fun those days were.)
Secret beach. It wasn't much of a secret, and most people needed 3 levels there.
Last but not least ....

BOGIES!
Welcome to one shot death.

I took THF and WAR through the Dunes, after that it was soloing in Bubu to 19, which it should have been from the start considering I was from Windurst.

Well Mor Dhona isn't a city, it's just an area, but obviously the mountain with the dragon skeleton/which the dragon was clutching in the trailer is going to have some significance to the story, so hopefully Mor Dhona will be a really cool looking zone.

So far I have to say that Ul'Dah looks the best of all the areas. I even like the look of the country side nearby. It's possible that Gridania will steal my heart, but right now it's looking like Ul'dah is going to be my starting city for sure.

It's a happy little place (pictures Bob Ross painting a happy little damselfly). I would describe it something like ... a filter. It is where the WoW crowd learned that in FFXI land, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.

Man, some of these places sound sooo amazing. Steps of faith, Gargoyles crossing, The bowl of embers, I cant wait to explore these areas and die horribly to everything nasty they are sure to hold!

I hope it will be as difficult to get to Ishgard as it was to get to jeuno the first time. I remember spending 3 hours sneaking from windurst at level 20 and dieing horribly to a raptor just outside Jueno Gates, mmm good times!

Going through Sauromugue for that 1st trip to Jeuno sounds rough. Compared to that, running through Rolanberry was like "Yay, I'm off to Jeuno"...happy music playin' & such...

Valkurm dunes wasn't all bad though, I remember getting #5 exp chains off of clippers with a balanced party and everyone was doing their best to stay alive and things were going great and a boogey spawned on our mages and everyone got slaughtered... ok.. it was bad.

Yeah it looks like they are making Gridania have a horrible map so less people want to start there.

I don't know why, but the dunes were like crack to me.

It was horrible most of the time DURING leveling up in dunes.

But once I got out of it, I found myself missing the dunes after a few months, and always went back there (and was looking forward to it) when I leveled up a new job.

Then the whole process starts over.

Everybody seems to forget you could do the subjob quest in Mhaura, too. That's why my RP LS once set up a low-level static that did the maze and Buburimu... nobody was ever there, so we had the area to ourselves.

On my server, San d'Oria was the most populous nation... I don't understand why so many people went to La Theine and the dunes so early... you could easily solo in Ghelsba outpost (at least the lower level areas) until 15 or 16... and given that orcs dropped fire crystals, you could make some money to boot (if you didn't need them, of course). Especially when they were up to 2-4k a stack. Level up a new and/or subjob in a mostly empty area. The only trick sometimes was pulling them safely. Then once you got to the dunes, you only had to spend a few levels there before moving on to worms in Qufim.

I almost miss those days. Almost. ;)

Offtopic: Valk dunes always took one life of each of your jobs no matter how often or little you passed through them. Some way, some how. You could have soloed to 75, walked into the dunes as a lvl 75 and some level 10 monster would whack you for 30 minutes while you went AFK to eat or answer the pesky neighbors at your door.

...So what happens in the dunes, stays in the dunes. It's like vegas but you gamble in blood. ;3

I hope there is a similar area the player base discovers in FF14 just for all the memories and shenanigans that will ensue.

concidering how awesome the crabs look in FFXIV i wouldn't really mind there beeing a abundance of them :)

FFXI DID have a bit of an issue with recycled monster models, but with the new model shaving system I doubt that will be an issue in FFXI. Things might be based on the same base-model but will still be able to look VASTLY diffrent.
