Question about the Open Beta patchFollow

I figured I'd try my luck at getting in Open Beta, so I started the download yesterday around 6:00 PM. I just checked and it's at 55% (this is after what, 18 hours?) so it's obviously a pretty big file (I couldn't find the file size anywhere? but I'm approximating 4-5GB based off of the d/l speeds and duration)

My question is...

if I don't get into open beta, is all of this worthless? Or does this crap I'm downloading save me from doing it for the commercial release? Will everyone eventually have to do this stuff, or am I just risking not getting in Open Beta and paying the price of downloading a file for 30 hours?

Of the 50 views on this thread I thought someone would know the answer?

Please?

I'm pretty sure you will need new downloads at release - but a lot of the big stuff will be on the disc.

The file size for the 8-30 update is somewhere around 4.7GB, so yeah it's huge. And I would fully expect the beta client to be useless when retail hits, but the disc itself should have generally the same content as you'll have had with the beta client anyway, so it's not going to be anything like having to download another 4+GB release day. :)

With the delaying of the open beta, you have time to finish your download even if it takes 30 hours.

And yes, you'll probably have to do it all again on release day as well as several times during the first few weeks of release. One of the things we're all hoping SE fixes is the updater so it doesn't take so long.

Usually Open Betas are available to everyone. So you shouldn't have to worry about "getting in" to the open beta. At least, thats how it is with most games (WAR, APB, etc.).

So yeah, keep your download going, so when you get an open beta key, you can play ASAP.

I may sound noobish, but are the beta keys going to be given via e-mail?
I had access to the closed beta, but now i'm not able to access the website and after looking on my SE account, It looks as though I need to register a FFXIV code.

uhh from what i read it looks like you log in, apply, and they email you a key thingy. And it sounds like its unlimited. So you can do it anytime during open beta and get a key. I think they were just worried about everyone applying to one at the same time and the registration getting congested. But now with the errors who knows what happens. If theres a serious bug they might only let limited ppl play. and i think they are limiting the number on servers at a time.
But if they open downloading to everyone im assuming they are giving everyone a chance to play.

Sounds like they'll be throttling signups, but otherwise sounds pretty wide-open:

The throttling is probably mostly to avoid the registration servers buckling under the traffic, I'm sure. XD I seem to remember them saying that they'd be limiting the number of people logged in at once, too (to increase over the phase of the beta), but it's possible I'm getting that confused with phase 3 (even though the beta servers weren't up 24/7 like they will during open beta).
