I am a huge FF fan and have played everygame so far. I have been trolling the forums constantly and am very excited about the game. My problem is that it seems there will be no differnce from 1 player to the next and there is no real advantage of going crafting 1st. Why would anyone want to begin crafting and gathering early on? Can someone give me any advantage you get from going crafting first vs DOW and DOM

I would say because you enjoy it. I played a character in beta that did nothing but gathering and crafting, and got my physical level higher than my character that was 2 DoW classes.

I'll sound like a broken record with this, but everyone will be the same as much as players allow it. Besides the possibility of unlockable advanced jobs and rare awesome equipment, characters will be alike. There's tons of room for everyone to make unique styles to their characters though. Unlike other games, one lancer, for example, can be totally different from another depending on how each person likes/wants to play. I guess we could all wait for someone to find an uber setup and fall in line to copy it, but we don't have to. Also, not everyone who gets a class to cap will be equally good at that class.

As far as crafting early being an advantage, for what? It's an advantage to those who want to craft. Not sure what you mean here, but I'd say maybe play the game for fun and not to "win."

I found starting botanist was awesome. I got some really easy levels and money right off the bat just from cutting down trees.

Personally, I'd played numbers of MMOs in the past and none of them had gathering and crafting as a "class", so for this simple reason, I started my character in Beta as a Blacksmith. However, I was not able to craft anything at the beginning...maybe it's my problem, but I got a leve to make 4 ingots and I didn't have any fire shards to make them. So I switched to Miner, and I found it's actually pretty fun to play a gathering job.

In terms of "advantage", I remembered when I leveled up my Miner, I got a skill which had chances to stun the opponent on my next attack and it costed 0 AP, so I equipped it on my level 1 Lancer along with two more Pugilist skills. Thus my level 1 Lancer had 5 skills to use at that level, so I guess that was an "advantage" in a way.

This has nothing do with winning it has to do with wondering. I am sure others wonder the same vanilla questions but are afraid to ask. If the only thing you gain from crafting is gil and I like attacking but wanted to do some crafting later then it would be a good thing to know but if crafting gives you a diffrent style of gameplay with a different story line then I may want to do that.

I see, well there's definitely different leves for the crafts aside from the fighting type leves. I know if you start the game as a fisher, for example, when you do "My Very 1st Adventure" it will be a fishing leve. There may be more class-specific quests in the game we don't know about because it wasn't all there in beta. So it does change a little, but to what extent I don't know...

You know, I do think that "crafting gives you a different style of gameplay" in a way. When I tried Blacksmith for a little bit (after I earned some gils and shards from other classes), I found that playing as a crafter was indeed a little different than a fighter. One of the things was that I would start to check out other player's "shop" and see if they had the materials I needed. If I saw a couple players had the same mats, I could compare the price. I guess the objective of playing a fighter class and a crafter class is very different, and that is the fun part.

Why does there need to be an advantage? Just play the game the way you want.

Thanks Twisted and Dunlag that is what I was wondering. I never got into Beta so can only ask to find out. I really wish they would add just one or two combat abilities for the crafters. I myself really want to start alchemey and wish I could potions or cocktails at monsters. The info you gave is very good though thanks again.

One advantage would be to be able to make your own equipment. Since xp can be gained just as easily from crafting as fighting you dont miss out on lvling up just because you wanted to craft. Otherwise its just personal preference. I know I will always start out as a gathering or crafting class because its what I did in Phase 3 and it worked pretty well for me. To each his/her own.

Why does everyone think advatage means better then somthing else. Advantage by definition is what you gain from something. If there is no benefit to a player then why would they play it. You will play this game for an advantage that would be to have fun.

Yeah I thought it was pretty sweet that I could sit there & fish for hours while both leveling fishing and physical experience on top of it.

Yea I was under the belief that it was like any other MMO and you only got xp by fighting and completing quest. That makes perfect sense.

yeah actually I got waaaaaay more physical exp from leveling botanist than from playing PUG and CON

And that difference, good or bad, is what has me already hooked on XIV even just from the beta :) after the zerg of unending wow clones I am starved for a truly different mmo, and I simply don't have the time for XI anymore
