I know you can play FF XIV with a PS3 controller on PC (or so I've been told), but in preparation for tonight I have a question. Do I need an external program of some sort in order to map keys or otherwise get it to work? Or do I just plug the controller in USB, install the driver, launch the game and I'm good to go?

Am not sure you may have to use an external program like motionjoy. A good way to check before installing the program though is if you already have the beta client installed, go to the FFXIV config after you plug in your controller and see if it comes up under the list of selectable controllers. In my case I am using a wired X360 controller so it say's X360 controller when the tab is clicked on. Give it a whirl and report back for people with a similar question.

How to use a PS3 controller in win7 and vista

After the installation process, go to your FFXIV folder (should be under Program Files (x86)/SquareEnix/FFXIV Beta Version/ and locate FFXIVconfig.exe, run it and go to Gamepad. Then you can set up your keys in there.

I use a Logitech PS3 clone - just plug and play. The beta config lets me map all the buttons.
