To be somewhat fair, better now then on release.

I hope they learn from this.

They should have issued keys earlier and allowed us to download the client in advance.

Agreed!! Worldwide registration and they didn't expect this to happen?!? Does SE really have a bunch of smart devs working for them? Not a good sign for Sept. 22nd!

Lol what lets you think it would be any better on release? If best it will be "only" as bad as right now...but prepare for even worse, when 3-4 hundred thousand people try to login to the Servers...compared to the people who are up to register for open beta its a joke...

You can prepare for everything and still be overrun. S-E probably had a good idea that the servers would be bum rushed, but word of mouth, bad communication (alpha/beta people also hammering), etc. To go from having very little traffic on a site to having tens (if not hundred+) of thousands of people all vying for something, site is going to go down.

Anyone in the states that tried getting the free Ozfest tickets for last year or the year before know this also.

As an PC release FFXI: I suppose SE still has not learned anything in so many years. Updating was slightly better. In fairness though, there is a sh*t ton of people trying to connect all at once so congestion is practically guaranteed.

EDIT: 1337th post? Srsly? I didn't know I stopped posting at my 1336th post...

SE could have done was let the closed beta testers into open beta before letting new testers in. That way they phase in groups of testers rather than everyone at the time. Just common sense!!!

Most MMOs have this initial zerg period where the logins crash, they all know it's coming, but there's still almost nothing they can do to stop it. They would if they could! what developer wouldn't love to have the reputation of being the first mainstream MMO to have a flawless launch? It would be GREAT for their game's image.

There are probably only a few thousand beta keys for one server available and this is actually a test of the registration servers.

Yep, but instead they didn't even make it clear to closed beta testers that they didn't need to try for another key. In fact, until that key shows up in my inbox, I'm STILL not going to believe it.

If they had half a brain everyone in closed beta would have been allowed in in waves throughout the day.

The login servers crashed during beta phase 1 for nearly a week. Beta Phase 2 had login crashs as well, phase 3 was only bad for the first few hours.

They should'nt have required a new registration code for current closed beta testers. It was stupid of them to require everyone to get a new registration code through the same **** portal...

It doesn't help that 90% of the people who play this game have OCD. I'm sure everyone's just hitting F5 over, and over. This is like when WotG came out, people clicking for hours on end trying to get the expansion registered. I know people want to be the first online, but really, other than yourself, no one cares that you were one of the first to play open beta. Give it a day and it will be better.

No amount of money invested in servers could prevent this OCD fest.

They jus think it isn't worth upgrading their server or data line for a single event rush... so most likely the release will be the same.... or worst... at least during release we get the game at different timing (the drive home or deilevery time) rather den sitting on a countdown timer

If people think they didn't see this coming - you're an idiot.

You think they just were like "LALALA GO!" - of course they knew this would happen.

I knew this would happen - any smart person would too. Didn't you?

The same thing happens everytime something huge like this happens, not just with FFXIV. Then life goes on.

You're assuming there will be keys in a day. Given SE's horrible way of handling the whole thing from day 1, and the current speculation that keys will be given out in waves. . it's difficult to leave such things to chance

If they saw this coming WHY in the name of god didn't they reactivate the keys of people who were already IN beta, thereby eliminating thousands of clicks IMMEDIATELY?

THEY are the DEVELOPERS it is THEIR JOB to foresee events like this and DO THINGS TO MITIGATE THEM...

SE doesn't do a very good job at learning from past experiences apparently (but given their abysmally slow track record with FFXI I can't say that I'm really even capable of false surprise). They're the kind of company that will keep doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different or better results every time. I still don't get why I was part of the Beta Testing since Phase 2 and I still have to sit here in line with every other Tom, Dìck, and Harry that wants in on the Open. I'm all for playing with even more people and giving everyone a shot at a key, but if I was already part of the Beta in the first place why the **** do I technically have to resign up for it?

No one to blame but SE. Why? Because they were the ones who setup their testing THIS WAY! Every game will always have a rush of testers and once the game is released. But many of the betas and game releases I have been part of, the developer learned something from previous failures. SE seems to have learned nothing. They could have sent closed beta testers their new keys days ago but they didn't. They could have phased in region by region for open beta and THEN start in-game logins today. But no, in their minds having everyone who wanted to get into open beta flood their servers exactly at the same time would be better. Mistake after mistake isn't an excuse it's just another mistake.

Things they could have done better:

-Automatically registered all previous beta testers
-Since you have to login to get the key, they should have automatically activated the key on the account you used
-They could have staggered the logins with the previous beta testers - made them go in waves
