What Gamepad To Use?Follow

Okay so I hear this game is more enjoyable by playing it with a gamepad controller rather than full on keyboard controls. I have only bought the cheap Walmart Recoil/Philips USB controllers for 13 bucks, but for this I figure I need something a bit more reliable. So people, anyone know a good controller I can purchase? I'm guessing most likely I'll have to order off of newegg or something..

Will be doing FFXIV:ARR. Gotta make use of that Collector's Edition somehow.

I got a wireless xbox 360 controller for the pc. I actually wanted the logitech wireless controller but my local best buy didn't have it and I needed it pronto so I just got the xbox one.

Anyway, it seems to work well but it was more money than I wanted to pay, think it was like 50 or 60 while the logitech one was 30.

I used one of those cheaper ones you're talking about for XI and couldn't stand it...so now I upgraded to cheap +1, a madcatz 360 wired controller...I've had no issues at all with it...that logitech one sounds pretty good too, I would've considered that if the store I was at had it...

FFXI style gamepad layout for FFXIV

Emote List/Stack Battle Commands: Right Bumper

Cancel : B Button

Select/confirm : A Button

Main Menu : X Button

Auto run : Left Bumper

Open Macros (ctrl) : Right Trigger

Target Lock : Left Stick (clicky)

Passive/Active Mode : Y Button

Open Macros (Alt) : Left Trigger

Change View : Right Stick (clicky)

Display Map : Back Button

View Status Effects : Start Button

360 Buttons
-Y-
X-B
-A-

I've mapped FFXIV controls to their FFXI equivalents. Two buttons did not have direct FFXI counterparts. I mapped battle stack commands to the right bumper (which is "Take Screenshot" in FFXI) and Passive/Active Mode to the button that FFXI uses for Active Window/Window Options. For those that don't have a 360 controller the "start" and "back" buttons are two small buttons located to either side of the big green X in the middle of the controller.

To map everything to a gamepad you need 12 buttons btw.

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:

I have both a Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 and a Xbox 360 Windows PC controller. I prefer the Logitech over the 360 controller.

I'll have to look into that since I own a ps3. I'm guessing theres just some driver or something to install onto my ps3?
If the ps3 controller doesn't work I'll probably use the Logitech Rumble 2 since it's pretty cheap and has a lot of good solid reviews. As for the rest of the suggestions, thank you for the responses. TBH I didn't expect there to be any replies considering I had posted my thread at the time of Open Beta madness.

The ps3 driver can be found there. I'm liking the ps3 controller better than the 360. It just feels more natural for a FF title

I'm thinking of going with an XBOX 360 controller, as I used to primarly play FFXI on my 360, so got used to the controls there. Besides they can take a beating. Seems like Microsoft has cast Stoneskin, Protecta and Shellra on these since I'm rough on them and they keep going :-)

I hesitate to even mention it because there aren't many in circulation any more, but I use a Logitech Netplay controller, which has an integrated compact keyboard.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I'm using the same Saitek p880 I picked up 8 or 9 years ago. I've played tons of games with it, including FFXI. It worked great for me in closed beta as well. If it ever breaks I'll buy one used on eBay if I have to. I also have a logitech rumblepad (which is pretty much a ps2 clone) that is OK, but not as comfortable to use for hours and hours. As a bonus windows vista and 7 will both will automatically install drivers for the p880, just plug it in and you're good to go, zero configuration.

How do you get the Netplay to work? It has the PS2 connection, is there an adaptor or something. I freakin loved that thing when I was playing FFXI on PS2.

Ok, I need help. I just bought the wireless Xbox 360 controller. First, I installed the software. Next I plugged it in and then synced the controller to the wireless thingy.

Went into the beta config and just saw a bunch of dashes in each slot under the gamepad. Didn't want to mess with them, so started up the game and it doesn't do a thing in the game. Can't move or anything. So logged out and tried using it on one of the Windows 7 included games and it works fine.

So I'm just a huge dummy and don't know how to set it up. Help please?
