I'm believe this has to do with page flipping.

If you have a 1 GB video card set this to "Resolution", I tried setting it to "double" thinking it would improve performance and it had the opposite effect. I'm guessing you need a 2GB card to set this to maximum.

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:

FYI I have figured out what "Buffer" is. It is exactly the same thing as FFXI's offscreen rendering. If you set it to "Resolution" it renders game graphics at same resolution as the window. If you set it to "double" it's the same as old "supersampling" trick in FFXI. If it's set to less than the window size then the game graphics will be rendered at a lower resolution than the window - just like FFXI.

The only difference is that in FFXIV it is based on the game window size instead of being independantly set.

So in addition to real MSAA support you can also do FFXI's supersampling trick on top of that - on some hypothetical future computer that is.
