well even though the game is lacking in tutorials... its still a massive improvement over their XI run lol. That game is not newb friendly at any stretch of the imagination lol.

So... they're trying this time at least XD They do some ... some tutorials

So then shut it...... jk :P

There is a tutorial leve btw, it helps you get on your feet a little - grab it at the Adventurer's Guild in town under tutorial leves, pick the battlecraft one, not the fieldcraft ones and then run to first camp and activate it...its a little useful. Plus there was also a help tutorial during the opening sequence of the game - also, the "NPC linkpearl" can help guide you on where to go next if you're lost. As for controls, everyone will get used to them sooner or later.

It's so-so I'd say. Granted, I've been in XI lots, but even then it could be worse. Nothing critical happened yet. Being curious by nature helps sometimes, at least!

A few things are rather meh though. If you decide to start in Gridania like me, and bump into the silly dancing preperation quest, be prepared! 24 man instances were yesterday, they are a joke compared to that! It literally drives you insane, because it mostly doesn't make any sense (bad translation perhaps).

Or just now before the servers went poof for the patch I tried mining. I was like...huh!? What's all this about? Is there any trick, does it matter when I actually hit the stone? Is this a power gauge? Location? How does that come into play. Guess I'll have to figure it out over time. I found some ore and wood, like one of each, but don't ask me how... Wouldn't know. xD

XI is actually newbie friendly especially these days, it's because it's heavily community based that when the community shifts mainly towards end-game the beginning and middle game gets harder.

XIV has some tutorials in, but a lot of the stuff will be in the manual (despite popular belief, the manual IS supposed to be read) so if there's no elaborate in-game tutorials you can expect a novel sized manual like you got with XI.

I am not sure about nowadays. I was just referring to FFXI launch. When XI was launched they didn't have any form of tutorials. You knew what to do by reading forums. I haven't played XI since the beginning of '06 so the game wasn't too end game heavy then and SE had yet to implement all of the "newbie friendly" updates.

As I am still downloading the first lot of updates, I have been browsing the Beta test site. If you go to the section called "Game Manual" there is a whole lot of information there on basic controls, monsters, battles and stuff. So for those with keys who aren't at the stage where they can play the game yet, I reccomend checking it out.

Also another interesting place to check out ont he site is the Version Updates as they detail all the new changes since the last Beta.

I remember when I was briefly able to play in the last closed beta, I couldn't figure out how to respawn after I died either. I was laying there forever, looking for something that would tell me how to return to the Atherite or something like that. I finally read the beta manual on the website and realized that the 'Return' button in the menu was for that.

All that time I thought it was for returning out of the menu (what I had been using the button assigned to 'cancel' for on my gamepad. Whatever happened to just spelling it out for you in a scrolling message across your screen like in FFXI? I never thought I'd say that game was more intuitive than well, anything.

Also, activating the crystal from the menu instead of WTFClicking on the **** thing.
