What do you think? Is it all you hoped it would be and more or is it disappointing? I am enjoying what I have seen so far but then again I have been in beta to see the evolution.

I think a few hours is too early for them to give an intelligent mini review. Give them a few days. :)

Initial Thoughts: Where am i supposed to go? What am i doing? How do i do anything? How do I etc, etc. Gyah all this flailing about is making me fall behind.

One hour in: Yay fishing, i know how to do this ^^. Oh so that's where i have to go. Wow that's far. Oh well i suppose because of that limit no one will outlevel me too much.

Six hours in: I've mined, fished, Puglist'd, Conjurored and ran from limsa lomina to Ul'Dah. I've realised that i can't treat this like a normal mmo, e.g. must get stronger asap or get left behind. I can feel free to just wander around everywhere and get to know the place, and still feel like i'm not just wasting time.

Yeah I did the same thing at first 3 character wipes ago, I tried to power through stuff but by day 2 I knda came to the same conclusion as you and i just started exploring I dont really feel a need to be in the top 10% of levelers in this game for some reason, which is a change for me.

Well technically I didn't run all the way between cities but:

Take the ferry from Limsa Lomina at the docks, the ferry ride will be about 15 minutes long real time. After that you'll be at the Thanados docks, from there to Ul'Dah it's a good 12-15 minute run, however now that i've visited Ul'Dahs Aerythite i can just use the teleport function to zip there and back :D.

Maybe you're just joking around, but I have some advice for you if you're not. MMOs are a marathon, not a sprint. What little "advantage" you get from being in Beta or CE release means nothing if you burn out and quit in a few months. Take it slow, enjoy the scenery, talk to NPCs. You can't "fall behind" in an MMO if you're enjoying yourself along the way.

Pretty sweet. Sounds like what they were doing with Abyssea, only on a larger scale. It'll be much more convenient to meet up for grouping. I think in a way this will actually encourage people to group more often.

Hydra, you touch on a point I wanted to ask : Do OpenBeta users get to keep their characters? Or will we be wiped like all other beta phases?

I'm debating whether it's worth making any decent progress in any one thing like crafting/farming, or should I just wait for retail for that?

Very nice that the trip can be over with so easily... and even sweeter that you are now able to port back and forth...

Wait for retail. Characters are going to be wiped. The only thing you can keep is your name, but only if you pick the same server at release.

The controls are awkward. Can't seem to find an option to put the camera on follow so I'm always twisting my mouse hand around to keep everything in front of me.

I'm gonna need a new video card.

Male Elezen on character creation screen look like *** dancers from a Madonna tour.

I spent entirely too much time trying to find the right highlight color for my hair.

Now, if I could ever get back in I'd like to check out crafting.

If you run forward and tap r it'll put your character on autorun. To control the camera from there just use a and d.

I spent the past 5 hours trying to install and optimize my graphics while fighting to log back in every time I closed the game. I'm sure I'll be spending another 5 after the servers are back up.

I had fun killing the three jelly fish though. The battle system was atleast mildly entertaining for those 50 seconds.

Oh well! Time for a coffee run.

You can keep your character (it gets saved to your computer) but your stats/exp get wiped.

Starting, My game was in a small window mode and took me about 45 minutes before I could find someone who knew how to make it full screen. ( was driving my eyes nuts ) Love FFXI and will love FFXIV also i know.
Very confusing woundering where to go and what to do next. I only got to try for a little while. found some levequest things at the Inn and went to the camp to start them.
Took some time to finnaly find and activate my new weapon skills. not a very user friendly system but once you learn then all good i suspose :)
After doing what few fighting quests I had. I couldn't get anymore for that spot or my rank. So I chose some of the gathering / crafting ones ( I think) but I have no idea how to change class to beable to do any of these. I have yet to find a tutorial to help me learn sysnithsis. the Quest told me to use a skill to find some honeycomb, but I could not find that skill anywhere.

That is where I am stuck at now. running around town, looking for a NPC to teach me how to craft or change jobs. Anything to put me back into some kind of progression. I couldn't even find a place to just hunt / Exp at. Seems so far its all about the levequests or crafting.

Loving the game. Just need to get pasted the learning basics :)

To change classes just purchase the weapon or tool that class uses and equip it and you will automatically change to that class.

This thread seems active enough so I guess i'll ask here. Does anybody know the next non-leve quest available after finishing the limsa lomina main quest (up to where you see the Musketeer Galka and Blacksmith Miqote chatting cutscene)?

You won't(and i hope never will) see yellow question marks.. SE expects you to talk to NPC's and build story line and explore and all those things that you know actually drove the MMO market up to the point where WoW dumbed it down for the masses... So far i'm liking this.

Yeah, theres nothing quite like the feeling of having to talk all 100 npcs in a city to find the one with updated dialog! I feel so superior once I find it!

This game blew me away.. keep in mind ive only had 1-2 hours in game. I was a huge ffxi fan ( nothing has topped it as best mmorpg in my mind until now maybe)
As soon as i turned the corner of uldah to go outside and saw the huge backdrop of scenery and the beautiful music from nobuo uematsu kicked in i was loving it. FFXIV > all mmos

Yeah, I know like I said, I absolutely have BLAST listening to the same dialog over and over while trying to find the ones that have new dialog. You make it sound like I'm disagreeing with you!

HEre's a little tip. Turn on NumLock and you can use the FFXI style controls for that entire keypad. Still as others have said the main problem is camera controls not being mappable to the arrow keys as in FFXI. Also for god's sake fix targetting to match FFXI as much as possible. Why are the Fkey functions moved all the way to the other end of the set?

You can listen all you want but unless you press your ears up against the monitor you probably wont hear much.

Brought me back to my first day playing FFXI. I almost quit because I spent 4 hours running around in Windurst and couldn't figure out how to get out of town... My wife (then just a friend:)) took the controls and was out killing stuff in less then 10 minutes... After that I was hooked (and in time married:).

You can remap those now, I did, under config keyboard settings.
