Whoever is in charge of the NA Square-Enix team needs to be fired....

Yesterday they post a message telling the people that were already in Beta didnt need to apply for another beta key.

Today, not a word about a server maintenance posted on the dev site.

And there's alot of other things they've been either slow about posting or didn't post at all...

This should have been posted in the feedback forum. They're more likely to read it there.

It was emergency maintenance, ie., not planned, impromptu, spur of the moment. it probably had to do with an unforeseen bug cropping up when they pushed out a live update -- which is amazing to me.. i don't remember once having an update pushed live in ffxi without the servers having to be down for an hour first.

BTW: The misinformation wasn't just contained to the USA. It affected JP and EU Closed Beta Players as well. "Centralized Misinformation" at its best ^.-/

While I don't necessarily agree with how Jerry worded it, he is correct to a degree.

People spend so much time complaining about these sorts of things as if they're even entitled to it in the first place. There is a lot to do on their part, and there are hundreds of people involved in it.

If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Last I checked, nobody here does.

Hey jerk off i paid them with my time to help THEM MAKE MONEY when they release this. All i expect is information. Nothing more, nothing less. And when they do give information for it to be accurate more then 5% of the time

This really doesn't pertain to Open Beta, more to the way SE behaves generally.

People do tend to get ****** etc... but I think it's more frustration at seeing this company fumble around and not handle anything the way they should. SE has perfected the ***** up, and I think most of the time it could probably have been avoided very easily.

It's just so painful to watch them operate from afar, sometimes I'd just like to slap the **** out of whoever is making these clumsy decisions. Then again they are a Japanese company and things are just handled differently, I don't think they'll ever get used to how direct we can be.

It's not about entitlement, it's about running a company in a way that keeps your loyal customers loyal. About making them feel like you appreciate their business by communicating openly and all that other good stuff.

Then again we keep supporting SE, giving them no reason to change their ways.

I'll be there at retail, I hope they can get it together in time.

Having worked on many beta releases, and the constant internal arguments (and they were heated arguments) as to allow the beta to happen, or just keep it in house makes me laugh, and sad at the same time.

The Beta is for defects, issues, and faults. While usability is a concern, design is design. And the order in which they are addressed is exactly as stated above.

To the OP's statement about the Beta Keys, they stated that before they closed B3. And shortly before opening the Open Beta. As for server maintenance, it's a beta, there is no guarantee the servers will be up period. The entire system is under development, and while it interferes with your time to play, they need to get their work done as fast as they can. As soon as they have a fix, they are going to implement it, so they get as much time to test. That means near zero notice on all server maintenance. It is something to expect, and in my opinion enjoy about the beta. To see that kind of turn-around in a stable manner says much about the current state of software design.

I hope that this can help people understand why SE has not been as responsive as expected.

I think SE's issue is that they have had like 9 years experience now with an MMO and have made the same mistakes over and over and over and over again.

It doesn't take a genius to realize theres going to be server congestion. But apparently it does take one to realize that requiring people to:
-log in through multiple pages to get a beta key
-log in and navigate multiple pages to "register" the beta key
-log into the game through mulitple pages
is a bad idea.

If everything was as simple as "log in, play" there would still be issues but they would be nowhere near as annoying to players as these ones.

Also there is a significant lack of communication. It wouldn't take much to get a bilingual/trilingual/quadlingual public relations girl/guy to go onto different fan forums ahead of time to establish their identity and then post during crisis's like this. At least that way players would feel the company was trying to fix the problem, and that the company -knew- what the problems were.

I really hope they fix these problems by the official release because I have a feeling a lot of -new- players will just give up and quit if they can't log on for half a day and theres no real explanation as to why or if it will be fixed.

i suppose i was more than just a bit vague when i complained about the server maintenance... Yes, I understand this is beta and emergency maintenances are more than likely... I wouldn't mind if NO ONE was told about an emergency maintenance. The problem I have is that, the EU dev site had an announcement about the emergency maintenance, I wouldn't know if the JP dev site had it, but the NA site didn't. Is it too much to ask that they just release information in a timely manner for all the dev sites?

As far as the whole, "Open beta is a gift" notion. Um no... they opened the beta for us to help them without any payment to stress test the servers. I won't complain about congestion, or log in errors, I expect that.... information is what is ******* me off. This close to release, I expect better from SE.
