Patching/Updating Using U-TorrentFollow

Hello Everyone,

I have followed others' advice and downloaded the patch files using U-torrent, I have placed the 'patch' files in the specified folders, however when I open up the Beta it still wishes to download all 6 updates.. I do not receive any prompt to update from the already downloaded files.

I have also tried opening the 'ffxivupdater' located within the ffxiv beta version directory but this doesnt seem to open any programmes etc..

Does anyone have any advice?

Regards,

Rhys

Assuming that you copied the downloaded .patch files into the right place, what would happen is the official updater will act like it's going to download the patch and then the progress bar will jump across for each file you've already got (because the updater determined that all of the file was already downloaded). So you might have it go from 0% to 45% to 100% for a hypothetical two files of different sizes.

The updater provided doesnt seem to open. This is the 'ffxivupdater' which is an application and is 626kb.
the ffxivboot which usually then opens the downloader for the patch files previously not downloaded just attempts to redownload them.

There are two directories on my HD regarding FFXIV

There is the C:\programfiles(x86)\SquareEnix\ffixvbetaversion which has client, data folders in. Also boot.ver and game.ver . Then 3 programmes ffxivboot + ffxivconfig + ffxivupdater

Then also a folder in my documents folder. Containing the patches and the torrent files.
This is where the other threads suggested placing the patches, perhaps this isnt where they are supposed to be?

Regards,

Well if what the above poster said doesn't happen (which it will happen if you have the files in the correct location) make sure that you have patch files in this exact location

C:\Users\Lucas (Your respective admin name of course)\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\d96437e6\patch

if they are not there, then find out where your torrent program is downloading them to then copy and paste them into the location above.

yeah, this is the wrong location. See my post above for the correct folder.

Might I add the files are d2010.08.31.2000.patch
should this be how the files are saved in the folder? their file types are PATCH files.

Thanks

If the fully-downloaded .patch files are in the directory specified (under My Games/... for the user that the beta client is run as), then the updater should just pick them up. When you copied the .patch files from wherever you had uTorrent download them to, did Windows ask you about overwriting any files? Assuming you tried the official downloader before giving up, it should've created a .patch for the first patch it tried to download. If the patch directory was completely empty when you copied the uTorrent .patch files over, then it's likely the wrong directory. Generally the only time you'll run into that is if your user is a "standard" user and you're running the client as an admin (because when you give UAC the login info for the admin user, it'll run as that user instead of your own).

hm... strange. As soon as you load the updater it should automatically recognize your patch files if everything is in the correct locations. If the updater isn't finding the patch files then it is looking in the wrong folder, simply put. The only thing I could say is triple (quadruple) check the location of the patch files. I would even do a sanity check and right click one of the patch files and copy the location (through properties) and paste it in word. Then right under it, paste in the file location that I typed out and make sure they match. B/c there is no reason why the updater would not work if those files are where they should be.

Although, the updater may be trying to d/l a smaller patch file before the large one that you used Utorrent for if you only used Utorrent for the large file and left the other patch files alone. In which case, as soon as it was done with the smaller patch file, it would then recognize the larger file.

Other than this, I have no idea whats going on. It should be a simple copy and paste operation.

Ok we have a little progress maybe.

My files are definitely all downloaded and in the correct directories. *smile*
Now when i run the boot, it just times out on the version check.

the version it says it is booting as is : 2010.08.27.2001

So im guessing it hasnt run the updater. Can i manually make it update or do i have to keep trying to boot. The updater shortcuts do not work!?

Regards,

8-27 is the last boot ("red") update, so that's fine. If it's checking the version then maybe the patch server's just flaking out (or your connection is or something), so it's not getting to where it would check for the physical patch files on your system. Presumably whenever it's able to get past whatever's stopping it from getting a response back that 2010.08.27.2001 is the latest boot version, you should be set.

Thank you very much for your help!

I will write back later if anything happens!

Ok No Luck!

Still tries to download the patches.
I have 2 new questions therefore:

1) Should the updater application file do anything when run (located a few directory branches prior to the patch files etc)

2) Does your PC recognise the patch file types? Mine has them set to open with Internet Explorer for some reason..?!

Regards,

Rhys

Yes I have fulfilled all the instructions in your previous post, I have all the files present in the correct folders.
Thanks for that - it was very useful!

When you run your updater, does it have a red or blue background?

The 'updater' doesnt work on my pc.
To achieve anything resembling this I have to run the bootup application. It then checks the current version and begins to download the files that i already have- claiming 1/6 need downloading.

It has a blue background - I have seen it be red but I cant pinpoint at what status my situation was at that time.

Some progress on your red/blue question.

I uninstalled the beta, and then reinstalled and ran the bootup.

It brought up a red background this time, did a really quick update download and install.
Upon re running, it had updated to the latest boot version and I am now back to where I was about 10 minutes ago.

Maybe it is just a server issue, but the message isn't suggesting that! I just want to get to the log in screen! haha!
#20 Sep 02 2010 at 2:31 PM Rating: Decent
Red means that it's downloading the actual .torrent file, blue is for when it's downloading the files that the .torrent points to. But at the same time, blue is also for when it is checking the files for accuracy. So even if you download all the files through Megaupload, it will still be a blue background, and you'll still get the download screen with a progress bar that fills up (should fill up quickly, in under 5 minutes, if it's just checking the files for accuracy).

Other than that, I got nothin.

The "ffxiupdater.exe" won't do anything if you double-click it (it'll be something that the main .exe calls when necessary), so don't worry about that. As for double-clicking .patch files, that's just a matter of what Explorer is set up for. Odd that IE would try to open them, but it doesn't really matter.

As for the "red" vs. "blue" updater dialog, red is for boot version updates (if you play FFXI, it's the equivalent of a POL update, just there's a visual cue that it's not a game file update) and blue is for normal client updates.

Just to be sure, the update process will actually start downloading the patches (you have local and/or remote connections and a non-zero upload/download)? There's usually a bit of a delay as it's verifying the status of the files on disk so if it's just that it sits there a little while then it's not necessarily doing things wrong. (But if you're connecting to peers and actively uploading or downloading then it's definitely trying to download itself.)

EDIT - I assume that after you reinstalled the beta client, you copied the .patch files back into the patch directory?

Should it load up as preparing to download. It does appear to then hang with 0 for everything you mentioned, should I give it say 30 minutes and see if anything happens? I dont recall it beginning to download anything. it just estimates it will take something crazy like 27 hours?!

Thanks for the help so far

Yes i copied the files back

I have left it running for 10 minutes now - and i have 0 upload and 0 download. Still an estimated time remaining of 27 hours and 0 remote connections but 4 local ones.

EDIT -

Should i delete the torrent files from the metainfo folders? Might this prevent it from trying to redownload?

Weird, yeah it's connecting to people and so it's not using the already-downloaded files. It should say "preparing to download" and then chunk along to the next file (part of "preparing to download" is figuring out how much is left, so assuming everything was done properly it'd see the file was fully downloaded and just move on).

One thing you could try is searching your entire computer for one of the patch files. Assuming you had uTorrent download to your Downloads directory or something, it should find it there and in the patch directory under My Games. Again, chances are when copying the six patch files to the patch directory you would likely be asked if you want to overwrite one (since it would have allocated the space for the first file already).

Running out of ideas on what might be up. Something must be out of place, but you've said you've gone through that walkthrough and have verified that it's under your account, so it should be working.... :\

EDIT - no, you wouldn't need to delete the .torrent files, those are kept around. It downloads the .patch files and after installing them will delete them all.

FAIL - It is trying to download the files again. all at 500ish bps, not even kbps :(
awful awful awful! Ive got no idea why it wont work!

Could it be because i downloaded the patches on my laptop and then took them off via my network onto my gaming rig? Surely that wouldn't make a difference?

no, that would be the same as copying and pasting the files, which I did when i d/l'ed them (i used utorrent to d/l to a specific folder then copied the patch files and pasted them into the correct folder).

As with Triane, I am at a loss. If I was you, as a last ditch effort, I would completely uninstall the beta client and dump the patch files you d/l'ed. Then just completely start over. Reinstall the beta client and re-download the patch files. Might only use utorrent to d/l the large files and let the beta client d/l the small files.

Meh, like I said, do as a last ditch effort. It just sounds like you need to completely start over.

No, that wouldn't make a difference, because I downloaded (and then reseeded) the patches on my laptop and copied them onto my main computer to apply.

One other thing you could try as far as locating the .patch files (just to make sure they're downloading on the user account you think they are) assuming you haven't gotten past the "red" update yet is to go into the other download directory (C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\bca2a8ae\patch on Vista/Win7). That's the directory for the boot patches. If there's a .patch file there and your updater is still red, then it's at least the right username, otherwise some other user account is being used to download the patches.

Another thing along the lines of verifying that this is the correct path is to move away all the .patch files you've downloaded so the patch directories are empty and make sure that a .patch file is added by the updater. If not, then you're on a different user account than what the downloader is using for some reason.

EDIT - When you followed Guybrush's walkthrough over on FFXIVCore, did you do that after an uninstall of the beta client? If not, that might be a simple way to proceed since he's got helpful screenshots as sanity checks. (I mean, it sounds like you've already done all these things, but still something has got to be out of place for it to not work since quite a few people have done exactly what you're trying to do with no issues....)

Ive tried the using the updated to check the directory and it does create the folder where i have been placing my downloaded patches so tahts all ok!

I would love to start over, but that involves the massive 4.7 gig patch download!! I think that might be the problem one as that is the one it starts to download?! any tips on downloading that amount of data! ive got it going on utorrent, but its going to take a while?!

Yeah, that 8-30 patch is a big one. :\ Is it possible that it didn't get fully downloaded previously by uTorrent? That's the only other thing that would make any sense if it's still trying to download patches and you've made sure that the directory you've put the patches in is the same one the updater's working with.
