Confused on what to doFollow

Started a couple characters, in different cities. I would start the game, go to the camp they tell me to, and do the 3 or so levequests that are available to me. They only take about 10 minutes total to do all 3.

Then what? Waltz around aimlessly attacking lone mobs for no reason?

That doesn't even make sense. If anything I was suggesting it was too easy to do the quests.

I'm no stranger to grinding mindlessly, I did play FFXI to level 75. I just didn't know if they were expecting us to start the same sort of system up in this game. Guess I should gather up some doods and go fight some T or VT mobs in a group?

Level, craft, gather, explore...I guess whatever it was that made you want to be in the beta...you should do that...

Looks like exploring gridania and the surrounding areas could kill a few days on its own lol(the other ones probably too, if that's not where you are)...I'd chat up some NPCs to see if any of 'em give quests & such this time around...they sure didn't last time...but that's me...

go to https://dev-na.ffxiv.com/
read the manual.

Remember this is open beta. They have not added many quests or main storyline quests as yet. You can obtain the higher level leves i.e. ~10 or ~20, but you can only get 8 in a 48 hour period. You can also join a party and do leve quests with other players.

If you are unable to progress your character that is what SE has intended. Play around with other mechanics such as crafting or start a character in another location. Either that or wait until September 22nd ;P

Oh yeah, if you're one who's worried about surplus & such, you could grind your **** off and test that...

i kill random monsters and explore before doing leves, maybe im just weird. I like scoping out semi secret hunting spots away from the herd though. The spawns better be mainly the same in retail....

There are main plot quests, don't know about others being implemented yet. Said more were added on the update notes. The main story quest for your area should be in your journal from the beginning though.

A few things you can do other than leves and grinding:

- Do the first story mission (which lets you earn some good money)
- Crafting
- Try other jobs (weapons)
- Explore
- Try all 3 starting towns

Don't forget that Open Beta is only meant to stress test FFXIV before release. They just want you online and doing some random stuff while they collect statistics. They haven't enabled most of the quests so that everything will feel new at release.
