Issues attacking enemies...Follow

#1 Sep 02 2010 at 5:17 PM Rating: Decent
I'm curious if this issue is happening with anyone else... Sometimes and actually quite often, I get this issue where I can't attack the enemy. I'll start a battle and start attacking it for awhile. Suddenly I keep getting error messages in my chat log saying I can't perform that action. I can't use a weaponskill, I can't attack, nothing. Meanwhile the enemy keeps whailing on me and I can do nothing but stand there. I'm using a Pugilist if that helps, but I don't recall this issue even in closed beta. Is there a way around this or is it just another one of SE's *****-ups?

EDIT: At times disengaging then engaging the target again has fixed it but usually doesn't. I've died so many times on guildleves and just normal mobs now because of this it's really getting annoying.

I've had the same issue on a couple of guildleves, pugilist also!

Yes I have. I thought I was going crazy. It usually happens if I get a couple of mobs targeting me, but not always.

I'm also experiencing problems with mobs that I can kill quiet easily, and then I can't kill that very same mob as if they are extremely difficult. I think it has to do with lag because I'll notice I'm dead out of nowhere after last checking and seeing about 150hp. I'll check the battle log and see that he didn't one shot me for 150hp. I just wasn't getting the update fast enough that I should use cure.

You are more than likely clicking on the Battle Regimen button while in combat. I did this a few times before I knew what it was, and the same thing was happening to me, I'd stand there getting wailed on, have to untarget/retarget to attack. Then I noticed that I'd clicked the battle regimen button, so, clicking it again "uses" the regimen(even though I was the only one in the party, so no weaponchain), and I could attack again normally.

1) above poster on battle regimen, I've done it too

2) try moving around a bit if it isn't #1, sometimes there's a weird monster/you aren't where it/you are supposed to be thing, but its almost always #1 for me.

I've experienced this in Beta 3. I assumed this was related to server lag, but I don't know.
#7 Sep 02 2010 at 5:43 PM Rating: Good
1.) It wasn't due to the battle regimen, I checked this first because I mistakenly had that issue on my Conjurer last night.
2.) Not the case either with improper battle placement, it was saying the action could not be performed. I moved around, backed up, moved forward, nothing. I've even pulled the enemy away from the location I was at when it happened, still failed. Besides, if that were the case then disengaging and engaging the enemy again (while still in the same spot) wouldn't alleviate the problem. It rarely fixed the problem, but it did fix it.

I'm thinking it's maybe something to do with the lag. Ever since Phase 3 I've noticed bag lag on the servers (I know they're stress testing the servers but allowing it to run THIS laggy is really causing issues with stability for some I've heard.) and it's my guess the client isn't getting the OK from the server that the ability or attack can be used again already. So the client is tricked into thinking you're still in the acting phase for a specific attack/ability and won't allow you to use another until it completes the previous one.

You're not alone. I've been playing Pugilist only so far and I failed to guildleves due to this happening.

So pug is glitched? Well guess I'll pick up a different class then...

I didn't have the problem yesterday (PUG) but today it started happening on both PUG and miner.

The problem is the same in battle as you've already described. The mining one happens when I try to hit a node. Failed a handful of guildleves thanks to this, so hopefully it's 100% fixed by the time retail comes around!

I just got this on my SECOND enemy in the game (after tutorial). Result? Death. Was one of my guildleve targets. Returned to crystal, crash. Failed quest.

Marauder, if you're wondering.

The game is even more unplayable than in CB3.

I found this prob. too, but then I realized that there are certain mobs in guildleves that you yourself can attack. for the mobs that you need to kill for a guildleve you can only attack the ones that have the slip of paper icon next to the name of the mob (and you have to have the guildleve activated) once you come close to the ones that YOU can attack it will give you a message saying you are approaching something or other.

As a starter in Gridania I noticed that I was unable to attack certain mushroom enemies just north of the first aetheryte camp, regardless of whether or not I was in the middle of a leve-quest. The place was packed with people but no one was attacking those particular enemies. They seemed glitched. It wasn't a battle regimen issue either.

Yup, that's sometimes the case, you're trying to attack mobs that are part of someone else's leve and it's not gonna let you. That might explain some of these issues.

I was just in a big mess of mobs & other people while doing a leve and I think I got the issue the OP talks about, after hitting the mob once(while on pug) when I went to do the next hard strike it said I couldn't perform that action.(I think) I quickly disengaged and then attacked it again and it was fine after that. But I bring up the point about it being a huge mess of mobs/characters because it was hard to tell at times = P

Same problem on my PUG as well, except I was alone, so I was not attacking the wrong monsters.

I died several times due to this nonsense.

I am extremely worried about how fast combat is personally. When you hit 1 for the ability, it takes about 2-3 seconds for it to register. In a lot of other games as soon as you click the hot key the skill goes off instantly. I mean I can probably look past this but it's actually quite irritating. :/

Japan hosted server.

Again, ruining my enjoyment of the game. We are not on dial-up anymore.

The OP talks about fighting a mob, then being unable to attack the same mob. That has nothing to do with leves.

It seems to happen to me mainly with marmots (I have no idea why that would make a difference), but when it does I'll just keep hitting the button now and then and wait it out. Once it quickly displayed 6 or 7 attack animations rapidly within a second or so, with the mob's HP going to zero at the same time, leading me to believe it's just a connection lag thing.

Doesn't bother me nearly as much as the poor, poor UI design and laggy cursor. I'm shocked they could produce something so bad as that UI. It's 2010, and I still have to hit enter to verify everything?! It's unsettling that somehow they didn't learn that very obvious lesson from FFXI.

The bug you're experiencing has been around for a while now. It used to be that if you entered active mode, and immediately activated a skill, you would be "stuck" I'm not sure how to bring about this bug now.

Sounds like it's the same thing though. You were stuck in active mode. You couldn't attack, you couldn't use commands, you couldn't exit active mode, you couldn't log out from the game. You were forced to force-quit the program, failing the leve you were on. Guess this bug's still around.
